  • Literature review on reliability test method for developing high performance optical/thermofluidic components. Since the miniaturization by the conventional mechanical process is limited to milli-structure, i.e. $10^{-3}m$, new technology for fabricating of mechanical components is needed to match cost, reliability, and integrability criteria of micro-structure. Although numbers of various researches on MEMS/MOEMS devices and components, including material characterization, design and optimization, system validation, etc., the lack of standards and specifications make the researches and developments difficult. For that reason, this paper is intended to propose the methods of reliability test for measuring the mechanical property of optical/ thermofluidic components.

  • A series of Thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers was prepared via a two-step polymerization process. The NCO/OH feed ratio of polyurethane synthesized in this study was varied from 1 to 1.3. Studies have been made on the effects of chemical and physical cross-linkina, and the properties of thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers based on isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI)/1,4-butanediol (BD)/poly(propylene glycol) (PPG, MW:2000), isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI)/BD /poly(oxytetramethylene) glycol (PTMG, MW:2000) was compared. These materials were characterized using FTIR spectrometer, dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer, and tensile retraction tester. PTMG based polyurethane elastomers showed higher elasomeric behavior than PPG based polyurethane elastomers at the same NCO/OH ratio. This feature has been connected with the specific nature of the polyols. The permanent set(%) was decreased with increasing maximum elongation from 50% to 300%.

  • 65% of the Korean peninsula is composed of mountainous area, 97% of which is composed of forest. Therefore, there is high possibility of mountain fire because a lot of potential inflammables such as fallen leaves are stacked on the ground. Moreover, most of the overhead transmission lines in Korea are operated on the mountain. However, there has been very little study for the effect of mountain fire on polymeric insulator for transmission line, though the study is significantly required Therefore, in this study the authors observed the deformation of the housing of the insulator under fire with respect to the ignition time, using artificial ignition testing equipment, and investigated electrical and mechanical characteristics of the insulator by dry withstand voltage test, impulse flashover test and tensile load test.

  • Differently from the tensile, transverse compression and torsion cases, the bending test of HTS tapes requires a lot of time and efforts, since the sample should be mounted successively onto bent sample holders in the order of decreasing radius and measuring the $I_c$ at each step. The influence of repeated cooling and warming experienced during these processes on the $I_c$ degradation can not be ignored. As a result, in this study, particularly. a new one-body type sample holder which provides continuous bending strains at 77K was devised. And, $I_c$ degradation behavior of Bi-2223 tapes under easy bending condition was investigated and compared that with other cases using Goldacker-type bending tester or respective sample holder.

  • Ta and Hf added Ti-l5Sn-4Nb alloys without V and Al elements for biomaterial were melted by arc furnace in response to recent concerns about the long term safety of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. All specimens were homogenized at $1000^{\circ}C$ and solution treatment was performed at $812^{\circ}C$ and aging treatment at $500^{\circ}C$. The microstructure and mechanical properties were analysed by optical micrograph, hardness tester and instron. Ti-l5Sn-4Nb system alloys showed widmanstatten microstructure which is typical microstructure in $\alpha$$\beta$ type Ti alloys. The Ti-l5Sn-4Nb-2Hf and Ti-l5Sn-4Nb-2Ta alloys showed better hardness and tensile strength compared with Ti-6Al-4V. The result of XPS analysis, Ti-l5Sn-4Nb alloy in air atmosphere consisted of $TiO_2$, SnO and NbO.

  • The theoretical equation for the relaxation spectrum of nonlinear viscoelastic polymeric material was derived from the Ree-Eyring and Maxwell non-Newtonian model. This model consists of infinite number of hyperbolic sine law Maxwell elements coupled in parallel plus a spring without a dashpot. Infinite number of nonlinear viscoelastic Maxwell elements can be used by specifying distribution of relaxation times, hole volumes, molecular weights, crystallite size and conformational size, etc. The experimentals of stress relaxation were carried out using the tensile tester with the solvent chamber. The relaxation spectra of nylon 6 filament fibers in various electrolytic solutions were obtained by applying the experimental stress relaxation curves to the theoretical equation of relaxation spectrum. The determination of relaxation spectra was performed from computer calculation.

  • A series of UV-curable powder coatings with different contents of photoinitiator (0.5 wt%, 1 wt%, 2 wt%) were formulated and measured gel content, tensile strength of cured film. Heat-sensitive substrates such as MDF, plywood and PVC were coated UV-curable powder and cured coatings were measured physical properties by pendulum hardness tester, glossmeter, pull-off adhesion tester. With increasing photoinitiator content, adhesion force between coating and substrate decreased because of crosslinking density increasing. The results of pendulum hardness was not significantly changed but gloss was changed according to different substrates. Adhesion of UV-curable coatings was enough to apply for heat-sensitive substrates. From these results, we concluded that contents of photoinitiator was a effective factor in UV-curable powder coatings. UV-curable coatings was a portential candidate for heat-sensitive substrates.

  • Poly(ethylene-co-isosorbide terephthalate) (PEIT) is interest in polymer which has isosorbide monomer that is renewable resources such as corn. However, there is important drawback which is low mechnical properties as increasing isosorbide contents. In this study, polycarbonate used to make up for drawback of mechanical properties of PEIT. In addition, PEIT used to improve the tensile elongation of polycarbonate because PEIT has good sheet proccessability. The effect of polycarbonate on morphology, thermal and mechanical properties were investigated using FE-SEM, DMA, TGA, UTM, and notched izod impact strength tester. As a result of this study, PEIT/PC blends were in compatible system and polycarbonate can act as an improvement of thermal stability and mechanical properties in the blends.

  • This paper dealt with contents of the quality evaluation method of lattice girder utilizing non-destructive method. Quality evaluation of ordinary lattice girder is performed through the tensile strength test of structural steel and visual inspection. The tensile strength test of structural steel is performed by collecting samples of lattice girder brought into the site, during which lattice girder must be damaged to obtain sample. In addition to such disadvantage, tensile strength tester is not available at the site in most cases, requiring an inconvenient service from test certification agency. In addition, it is substituted by mile sheet issued during the production of structural steel, which inevitably lacks reliability. Furthermore, visual inspection at the site entails a problem of lack of reliability, thereby requiring a method of easily and quickly evaluating the quality of lattice girder without damaging the material. Accordingly, this study comparatively analyzed the yield strength of tensile strength test and the yield strength of instrumented indentation test with same sample. The test results ensured over 95% precision level for the instrumented indentation test, based on which a quality evaluation method based on instrumented indentation test that allowed onsite direct quality evaluation is proposed.

  • The viscoelastic behavior of traditional Korean noodles was examined by using a tensile tester built in the laboratory. The creep test of cooked noodle strand showed that a linear viscoelastic response could be expected for a short time of creep, i.e. 120 sec for wheat flour noodle and 60 sec for wheat-sweet potato starch noodle, with the stress range between $4{\times}10^4\;and\;14{\times}10^4\;dyn\;cm^{-2}$. The elastic modulus was estimated to be $7.0{\times}10^5\;dyn\;cm^{-2}$ for wheat flour noodle and $3.9{\times}10^5\;dyn\;cm^{-2}$ for wheat-sweet potato starch noodle. A peculiar increase in viscosity with increasing stress, i.e. stress-hardening, was observed in the noodles studied.
