  • This study is intended to investigate the shear fatigue behaviour of reinforced concrete beams based on a series of experiments, and verify the test results in comparison with the analysis result obtained by using a nonlinear finite element method. The experiments are divided into the tests under the static loading and the test under the dynamic fatigue loading. In order to investigate the shear failure behaviour under static loadings, four specimens for three different cases were made and tested. The behaviour of stirrups with the static stress and strain variations were observed based on the results of these tests. In the fatigue fracture tests, eleven specimens for four different cases were made and tested. Various observations on mid-span deflection of test beams and tensile strains of reinforcing steels as well as stirrups were made against various fatigue loadings. It may be concluded that the shear fatigue strengths of R.C. specimens at one million cycles turn out to be approximately 65 percent of the static ultimate shear strength.

  • The main objective of the research is to evaluate the laboratory performances of epoxy asphalt mixtures for long-span steel bridge decks. The aggregate gradations were recommended for field applications. The laboratory performance test results showed that the durability of epoxy asphalt mixtures was more noticeable than that of conventional ones. The structural analysis was conducted using resilient modulus and bond-shear test results. The analysis results revealed that just 9% out of total bond-shear stress was enough for the entire required bond-shear stress in the pavement system. The tensile stresses in the bridge decks were within limits compared to the laboratory test results from the Nanjing Grand Bridge in China. As a result, the laboratory performances of the epoxy asphalt mixtures for long-span steel bridge decks were better than those of conventional asphalt mixtures. However, the laboratory performance tests of epoxy asphalt mixtures for long-span steel bridge decks should be conducted precisely since the strengths of the mixtures are sensitive to the temperatures and curing times.

  • This study is to clarify the comparative relationship and a mechanical anisotropy of rock on the subject of granite distributed in the Namwon area Uniaxial compressive and Brazilian strengths with respect to the horizontal and vertical axes of granite are shown the linear relation. In the case of the result of the p-wave velocity measurement. it is represented that the velocity of vortical direction is faster about 10 to 15% than other two horizontal directions. The difference between velocities is caused by a developmental pattern of microcracks distributed in rock. Moreover, this result is very consistent with the result investigated through thin sections. The proportion of uniaxial compression strength to Index of point load strength ($Is_{(50)}$) is 18~20 times in case of granite. Uniaxial compressive strength is relatively good relationship with point load strength, Schmidt hammer rebound value, and tensile strength point load strength of them is the best comparative relationship. It is indicated that point load test is the most useful tool to estimate uniaxial compressive strength, comparing with other experimental methods.

  • To evaluate the development of the microstructure and mechanical properties on surface modified and post-heattreated Inconel 718 alloy, this study was carried out. A friction stir process as a surface modification method was employed, and overlap welded Inconel 718 alloy as an experimental material was selected. The friction stir process was carried out at a tool rotation speed of 200 rpm and tool down force of 19.6-39.2 kN; post-heat-treatment with two steps was carried out at $720^{\circ}C$ for 8 h and $620^{\circ}C$ for 6 h in vacuum. To prevent the surface oxidation of the specimen, the method of using argon gas as shielding was utilized during the friction stir process. As a result, applying the friction stir process was effective to develop the grain refinement accompanied by dynamic recrystallization, which resulted in enhanced mechanical properties as compared to the overlap welded material. Furthermore, the post-heat-treatment after the friction stir process accelerated the formation of precipitates, such as gamma prime (${\gamma}^{\prime}$) and MC carbides, which led to the significant improvement of mechanical properties. Consequently, the microhardness, yield, and tensile strengths of the post-heat-treated material were increased more than 110%, 124% and 85 %, respectively, relative to the overlap welded material. This study systematically examined the relationship between precipitates and mechanical properties.

  • In this study, an assessment method was proposed to evaluate the pullout resistance between geosynthetic and backill soil by using a stress-strain relationship of the orthotropic composite material subjected to both longitudinal and vertical loadings. For this analysis friction characteristics of geosynthetic-soil and stress-strain relationships subjected to soil confined pressure were investigated by performing the laboratory pullout tests for three types of geosynthetics and performing the confined extension tests far seven types of geosynthetics having geotextiles, composite geosynthetics and geogrids. A comparison was made between unconfined an confined moduli far each geosynthetic material to quantify the soil confinement effect on stress-strain properties. A comparison was also made between the relative increase of moduli at the same strain level among the seven geosynthetic materials to demonstrate the different responses of these geosynthetic materials under soil confinement. Based on the proposed procedure, it was shown that values of the increased tensile force are applicable fur the evaluation of friction strengths between five types of geosynthetics and sands in light of the soil confinement effect.

  • This study aimed to develop a two-component TSL suitable for reducing dust and guaranteeing homogeneous qualities during its spraying. Its performance was evaluated by a series of laboratory and field tests. High ductility of two-component TSL prototypes resulted in increasing their elongation at break even though their tensile strengths were slightly lower than those of one-component powder TSLs. One prototype of the two-component TSLs developed in this study was verified to satisfy every criterion specified by EFNARC (2008). Especially, it increased the average compressive strength of mortar specimens by 50% even when it coated them only with the thickness of 3 mm. From a preliminary spraying test, a spraying machine suitable for the developed TSL prototype was derived and modified. After its field application, dust and rebound generated during its spraying works were found to be very minimal. Its spraying rate was recorded to be approximately $60m^2/hr$. In addition, it showed a very rapid hardening characteristic compared with general sprayable waterproofing membranes.

  • In order to investigate the behaviour of lying multi-stud connectors in cable-pylon anchorage zone, twenty-four push-out tests are carried out with different stud numbers and diameters. The effect of concrete block width and tensile force on shear strength is investigated using the developed and verified finite element model. The results show that the shear strength of the lying multi-stud connectors is reduced in comparison with the lying single-stud connector. The reduction increases with the increasing of the number of studs in the vertical direction. The influence of the stud number on the strength reduction of the lying multi-stud connectors is decreased under combined shear and tension loads compared with under pure shear. Yet, due to multi-stud effect, they still can't be ignored. The concrete block width has a non-negligible effect on the shear strength of the lying multi-stud connectors and therefore should be chosen properly when designing push-out specimens. No obvious difference is observed between the strength reductions of the studs with 22 mm and 25 mm diameters. The shear strengths obtained from the tests are compared with those predicted by AASHTO LRFD and Eurocode 4. Eurocode 4 generally gives conservative predictions of the shear strength, while AASHTO LRFD overestimates the shear strength. In addition, the lying multi-stud connectors with the diameters of 22 m and 25 mm both exhibit adequate ductility according to Eurocode 4. An expression of load-slip curve is proposed for the lying multi-stud connectors and shows good agreement with the test results.

  • Nickel-based superalloy IN 713C powders have been consolidated by hot isostatic pressing (HIPing). The microstructure and mechanical properties of the superalloys were investigated at the HIPing temperature ranging from $1030^{\circ}C$ to $1230^{\circ}C$. When the IN 713C powder was heated above ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ solvus temperature (about $1180^{\circ}C$), the microstructure was composed of the austenitic FCC matrix phase ${\gamma}$ plus a variety of secondary phases, such as ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ precipitates in ${\gamma}$ matrix and MC carbides at grain boundaries. The yield and tensile strengths of HIPed specimens at room temperature were decreased while the elongation and reduction of area were increased as the processing temperature increased. At $700^{\circ}C$, the strength was similar regardless of HIPing temperature; however, the ductility was drastically increased with increasing the temperature. It is considered that these properties compared to those of cast products are originated from the homogeneity of microstructure obtained from a PM process.
