We show how comparative mean residual life functions (MRL) can be used to give unique insights into strengths of materials data. Recall that Weibull's original reliability function was developed studying and fitting strengths for various materials. This creative comparing of MRL functions approach can be used for regular life data or any time to response data. We apply graphical MRL's to real data from tests of tensile strength of high quality engineered wood.

Nonlinear analysis of the reinforced concrete beam subjected to torsion is presented. Seventeen equations involving seventeen variables are derived from the equilibrium equation, compatibility equation, and the material constitutive laws to solve the torsion problem. Newton method was used to solve the nonlinear simultaneous equations and efficient algorithms are proposed. Present model covers the behavior of reinforced concrete beam under pure torsion from service load range to ultimate stage. Tensile resistance of concrete after cracking is appropriately considered. The softened concrete truss model and the average stress-strain relations of concrete and steel are used. To verify the validity of Present model, the nominal torsional moment strengths according to ACI-99 code and the ultimate torsional moment by present model are compared to experimental torsional strengths of 55 test specimens found in literature. The ultimate torsional moment strengths by the present model show good results.

Nominal shear strength of concrete beam is the combined strength of concrete shear strength and steel shear strength in current design code. But Torsional moment strength of concrete is neglected in calculation of the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam in current revised code. Tensile stress of concrete strut between cracks is still in effect due to tension stiffening effect. But the tensile stresses of concrete after cracking are neglected in bending and torsion in design. The torsional behavior is similar to the shear behavior in mechanics. Therefore the torsional moment strength of concrete should be concluded to the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam. To verify the validity of the proposed model, the nominal torsional moment strengths according to CEB, two ACI codes(89, 99) and proposed model are compared to experimental torsional strengths of 55 test specimens found in literature. The nominal torsional moment strengths by the proposed model show the best results.
A series of Ni-Cr-Mo alloy steels were austenitized, quenched to martensite, and tempered at various temperature and time conditions. Tensile testing was conducted at room temperature with cylindrical specimens, and hardness was measured using Rockwell hardness tester. In the tempering stage I, high strain hardening and yield strength accounted for the high ultimate strength and hardness. In the tempering stage II, strengths and hardness linearly decreased with increasing tempering temperature. Specimens tempered in the temperin stage III showed incipient discontinuous yielding and tensile strengths only slightly higher than yield strengths. Ductilities decreased slightly in specimens tempered in the tempered martensite embrittlement range, and severely decreased in specimens tempered for 10 hours at $500^{\circ}C$ in the temper embrittlement range. Specimens tempered at $600^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours showed recrystallized microstructures, a number of fine dimples, and increased strain hardening, probably due to the precipitation of alloy carbides. The simple formulae for the mechanical properties of these steels were suggested as a function of carbon content and Hollomon-Jaffe tempering parameter.

The damage to non-structural elements in buildings has been increasing due to earthquakes. In Korea, post-installed anchors produced overseas have been mainly used for seismic anchorage of non-structural components to structures. Recently, a new cast-in-place concrete insert anchor installed in concrete without drilling has been developed in Korea. In this paper, an experimental study was conducted to evaluate the tensile and shear strengths of the newly developed anchor under monotonic load. The failure modes of the tension specimens were divided into concrete breakout failure and steel failure, and all shear specimens showed steel failure. In both tension and shear, the maximum loads of specimens were greater than the nominal strengths predicted by the concrete design code (KDS 14 20 54). As a result, it is expected that the current code can also be used to calculate the strength of the developed cast-in anchor.
The effect of maleinized polybutadiene (MPB) on the mechanical properties of epoxy resins including adhesion strength, elongation and impact peel resistance was investigated in this study, in which MPB is an anhydride-functionalized polybutadiene prepolymer. Different molecular weights (3.1K and 5.6K) of MPB were added to diglycidyl ether bisphenol-A (DEGBA), an epoxy resin, to increase its impact peel strength and elongation. At various loading percent (5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 wt%) of MPB in the epoxy resin, significant improvements of mechanical properties were observed. According to the comparative analysis results, the modified epoxy system with 15 wt% (3.1K) MPB exhibited the highest lap shear strength, about 40% higher than that of neat epoxy. The tensile strength and elongation steadily and simultaneously increased as the loading percent of MPB increased. The impact peel strengths at low (-40℃) and room (23℃) temperatures were substantially improved by MPB incorporation into epoxy resins. Reactive and flexible MPB prepolymer seems to construct strong nano-structured networks with rigid epoxy backbones without sacrificing the tensile and adhesion strengths while increasing impact resistance/toughness and elongation properties. For higher impact peel while maintaining adhesion and tensile strengths, approximately 10-15 wt% MPB loading in epoxy resin was suggested. Consequently, incorporation of functionalized MPB prepolymer into epoxy system is an easy and efficient way for improving some crucial mechanical properties of epoxy resins.
STS304L of membrane structure has been used for a LNG storage tank and has exposed long time under the cryogenic temperature. The purposes of this study are to evaluate the mechanical properties of base and used materials for STS304L of membrane. The tensile and high cycle fatigue tests were investigated for STS304L of membrane used over 20 years at room temperature and $-162^{\circ}C$. In addition, the test of base STS304L was performed in order to compare with used material properties. The chemical composition and phase change were investigated from EDS and XRD. From results of tensile test, yield and ultimate tensile strengths of used STS304L are smaller than those of base STS304L. S-N curves were obtained from fatigue tests at both temperatures. Also, P-S-N curves were presented with statistical method recommend by JSME-S002. Fractography was conducted for analysis of fracture mechanisms.
The effects of hydrogen precipitation on the mechanical properties of Zircaloy-4 and Zirlo alloys were examined with uniaxial tensile tests at room temperature and at 400 ℃ and accompanying microstructural changes in the Zircaloy-4 and Zirlo alloy specimens were discussed. The elastic moduli of Zircaloy-4 and Zirlo alloys decreased with increasing hydrogen concentrations. Yield strengths of both materials tended to decrease gradually. The reductions of yield stress seems to be caused by the dissipation of yield point phenomena shown in stress-strain curves. Ultimate tensile strengths (UTS) of Zircaloy-4 and Zirlo slightly increased at low hydrogen contents, and then decreased when the concentrations exceeded 500 and 700 wppm, respectively. Uniform elongations were stable until 600 wppm and drops to 0% around 1400 wppm at room temperature.

This study is intended to analyze how formations affect the tensile and tear strengths of paper at the same basis weight. Light transmitance method using a scanner was employed to measure the degree of formation in terms of gray scale. Scanning method showed close relationship between gray scale value and basis weight. At the same basis weight a sheet of paper with good formation had higher tensile strength in terms of breaking length than that of a paper with poor formation. There was little difference in tear strength depending on formations.

In this study, we experimentally evaluated the mechanical properties and geometric form accuracy in FDM 3D printing processes based on the printing direction, building direction, and layer thickness. The specimen test results showed that the tensile strength increased by over 33% in the printing direction compared to the direction perpendicular to printing and the tensile strength becomes larger as the layer thickness decreased. Furthermore, the tensile and impact strengths in the building direction were significantly reduced due to the difference in the interlayer joining and bonding strengths of the fused material. Additionally, shrinkage of the material due to phase change induced curl distortion especially in thin and long 3D-printed products, which increased as the layer thickness increased.
