Numerical investigation of The characteristics of Biaxial Flexure Specimens (수치해석을 이용한 이방향 휨인장 시험체의 특성분석)

  • This paper presents the numerical investigation of the characteristics of biaxial flexure specimens for the Biaxial Flexure Test(BFT) which was recently developed to measure the biaxial tensile strength of concrete. Using FEM, the effect of size and eccentricity on the specimens was evaluated. The parameters such as radious of the support and the loadings, thickness and free length were studied. The results of the FE analysis were entirely consistent with the predictive solution, when b/agt;0.4, h/alt;0.6 and the thickness of the specimens were increased. On the other hands, when b/agt;0.4, those with lesser free length showed good results. To limit the difference between the stresses at the end points of 2b as the specimen was sustained and the stress at the center point of the specimen are not over 10%, lateral eccentricity was analyzed to be in the limits of 3%.

  • During the past decades, development of reinforcing materials caused a revolution in the structure of high strength and high performance cement-based concrete. Among the most important and exciting reinforcing materials, Steel Fiber (SF) becomes a widely used in the recent years. The main reason for addition of SF is to enhance the toughness and tensile strength and limit development and propagation of cracks and deformation characteristics of the SF blended concrete. Basically this technique of strengthening the concrete structures considerably modifies the physical and mechanical properties of plain cement-based concrete which is brittle in nature with low flexural and tensile strength compared to its intrinsic compressive strength. This paper presents an overview of the work carried out on the use of SF as reinforcement in cement-based concrete matrix. Reported properties in this study are fresh properties, mechanical and durability of the blended concretes.

  • Joining or welding of dissimilar metallic materials is very difficult problem because material properties like heat conductivity, melting points, coefficient of thermal expansion, etc. are different each other and cracks are occurred easily due to formation of intermetallic compounds. Nevertheless, deep attention from great industrial demands and trials to joining dissimilar materials has been increased steadily. In this study, TIG welding of Cu to Al is tried and tensile test, SEM and EDX analysis are carried out.

  • The welded structure unnecessarily remains residual stress due to the very high heating of local region and lastly cooling. The residual stress sometimes causes fracture initiation of welded structures. In this paper, distribution and magnitude of tensile and compressive residual stresses in the TIG(Tungsten Inert Gas) welded aluminum alloy such as Al5083-H112 are measured by using the hole-drilling method. Furthermore, the effects of residual stresses in the TIG welded aluminum CCT(Center Crack Tension) and SEN(Single Edge Notched) Specimens on the fatigue crack propagation behavior are analyzed. The fatigue cracks initiated at residual stresses region are influnced by tensile and compressive residual stresses. However, the effects are found to be released fast for both cases according to the cyclic loads and extension of crack length.

  • When workability at the a certain bulk deformation process is defined as the maximum plastic deformation capability that the workpiece can sustain without causing any cracks or fracture, the workability is dependent on the microstructure, initial workpiece shape, stress state developed during the deformation process, strain rata and presence of the interfacial friction between workpiece and tool. For a review purpose, the workability definition and test methods are summarized depending on the applied stress state at bulk deformation process in Table 1 at the text. In this study, the cold workabilities of as-cast A16061 bulk material have been measured and comparatively analyzed at the primary tensile stress state by using tensile specimens, the primary compressive stress state by using cylindrical specimens, and the forming limit diagram by ductile fracture.

  • Concrete is one of the principal materials for the structure and it is widely used all over the world. but it shows extremely brittle failure under bending and tensile load. Recently to improve such a poor property. High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious Composites (HPFRCC) have been developed. and it are defined by an ultimate strength higher than their first cracking strength and the formation of multiple cracking during the inelastic deformation process. This study is to develop the hybrid HPFRCC with high ductility and strain capacity in bending and tensile load. and the three-point bending test on hybrid HPRFCC reinforced with micro and macro fibers is carried out in this paper. As the results of the bending tests. hybrid HPFRCCs reinforced with PVA40+SF and PVA100+PVA660 showed the high ultimate bending stress, multiple cracks and displacement hardening under bending load.

Nominal Torsional Moment Strength of RC Beam with Torsional Moment Strength of Concrete (콘크리트의 비틀림강도를 포함한 RC보의 공칭비틀림강도)

  • Nominal shear strength of concrete beam is the combined strength of concrete shear strength and steel shear strength in current design code. But Torsional moment strength of concrete is neglected in calculation of the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam in current revised code. Tensile stress of concrete strut between cracks is still in effect due to tension stiffening effect. But the tensile stresses of concrete after cracking are neglected in bending and torsion in design. The torsional behavior is similar to the shear behavior in mechanics. Therefore the torsional moment strength of concrete should be concluded to the nominal torsional moment strength of reinforced concrete beam. To verify the validity of the proposed model, the nominal torsional moment strengths according to CEB, two ACI codes(89, 99) and proposed model are compared to experimental torsional strengths of 55 test specimens found in literature. The nominal torsional moment strengths by the proposed model show the best results.

Study on Reinforcing Method of Equipment Foundation System (기기기초 시스템의 보강방안에 대한 연구)

  • This study was carried out to suggest the effective reinforcing method which can evaluate the tensile capacity of cast-in-place anchor with cracks. Currently, cast-in-place anchor is used widely for the fastening of equipment in Korean NPPs. 26 test specimens with a single anchor under 4 cracked conditions are prepared using plain concrete. The distance between crack and anchor and reinforcing materials were selected as the main test variable. The tensile force was applied using a actuator with a capacity of 100 tonf using a displacement control method of 0.5 mm/min velocity. Test results from this result show the combination of carbon plate and epoxy will be more available for repair and reinforcement of equipment foundation system in NPPs. Further experimental work is indeed involving the epoxy injection effect and adjustment of reinforcing location of carbon sheet.

  • The analysis of cracks at the interface between dissimilar materilar has received a great deal of attention in recent years. In this paper we conducted the static tensile test for the aluminum bonded single lap-joint with the interface edge crack. Comparing this results, that is ultimate load and strain value of aluminum adherend by strain gauge with the fracture mechanics parameters, compliance and stress intensity factors acquied from the boundary element analysis, we concluded that there are critical value of crack length to provoke the interface fracture.

Simplified approach for the evaluation of critical stresses in concrete pavement

  • Concrete pavements are subjected to traffic and environmental loadings. Repetitive type of such loading cause fatigue distress which leads to failure by forming cracks in pavement. Fatigue life of concrete pavement is calculated from the stress ratio (i.e. the ratio of applied flexural stress to the flexural strength of concrete). For the correct estimation of fatigue life, it is necessary to determine the maximum flexural tensile stress developed for practical loading conditions. Portland cement association PCA (1984) and Indian road congress IRC 58 (2015) has given charts and tables to determine maximum edge stresses for particular loading and subgrade conditions. It is difficult to determine maximum stresses for intermediate loading and subgrade conditions. The main purpose of this study is to simplify the analysis of rigid pavement without compromising the accuracy. Equations proposed for determination of maximum flexural tensile stress of pavement are verified by finite element analysis.
