  • In this article, an attempt has been made to explain the failure mechanism of spun yams. The mechanism includes the aspects of generation and distribution of forces on a fibre under the tensile loading of a yam, the free body diagram of forces, the conditions for gripping and slipping of a fibre, and the initiation, propagation, and ultimate yam rupture in its weakest link. A simple mathematical model for the tenacity of spun yams has been proposed. The model is based on the translation of fibre bundle tenacity into the yam tenacity.

  • Polyacrylontrile fiber was modified with argon low temperature plasma by RF glow discharge at 240 mTorr, 40 W to investigate the surface morphological changes and mechanical characteristics such as elongation, tenacity, and modulus. Analysis of the SEM images revealed that the plasma treatment resulted in significant ablation on the surfaces rendering a severe crack formation. The morphological changes were evident with short treatment time of argon plasma although longer treatment time damaged the surface more severely. The mechanical characteristics such as tenacity and elongation were deteriorated due to the plasma treatment. The tenacity of the fiber treated with argon-plasma for 5 min showed a decreased value up to 21.9 % when compared to the untreated fiber. While the corresponding initial modulus(0 - 1 %) increased markedly up to 44.3 %.

  • High tenacity polyethylene(HTPE) fiber is one of the most important synthetic fibers which possesses outstanding properties such as low density, excellent surface hardness and scratch resistance, superior electrical insulation and low cost. In this study, we dyed high tenacity polyethylene filaments using three different solvent dyes based on log P calculations. We evaluated the dyeing characteristics of dyed high tenacity polyethylene filaments based on dyeing temperature, dyeing time and concentration of solvent dyes. We also analyzed the tensile strength and elongation properties of dyed high tenacity polyethylene filaments with various dyeing temperature and dyeing times. The optimized dyeing condition can be found at $120^{\circ}C$ for dyeing time of 1 hour with 4%(o.w.f.) of solvent dyes.

  • The bleaching is one of the worst factors which leads to the damage of the human hair. The cuticle of the human hair is injured by the alkali that is one of the chief ingredients of a bleaching agent. The alkali component of the bleaching solution chemically reacts with human hair, reducing the tenacity and dissolving the cuticle layer. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of bleaching time and temperature on the physical properties and morphology. The results were as follows. 1. The stress-strain curves for human hair indicated the three distinct regions, such as Hookean region, Yield region and post-Yield region. The tenacity of hair is reduced gradually with an increase of bleaching time. Under these same conditions, elongation of the hair increased. 2. The greatest drop in tenacity for hair occured between $40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ of bleaching temperature. 3. Compared with the virgin hair, bleached hair showed a slower rate of weight reduction in the TGA thermogram. The rate decreased gradually as the bleaching time and temperature increased. 4. As the bleaching conditions reached time and temperature extremes, the human hair cuticle became more damaged. The cuticle layers seemed to have dissolved, as seen in the SEM photographs.

  • This paper surveys the mechanical properties of nylon high tenacity coarse yarn and fabric for military and technical textiles. For this purpose, 6 kinds of yarns and 2 kinds of fabrics are prepared. The yarn physical properties such as yarn count, thermal shrinkages, and tensile properties are measured and discussed with the characteristics of the domestic and imported yarns. And, the physical and mechanical properties of these fabrics are also measured and discussed with the usage of these fabrics in the military and technical textiles fields. Hereafter, the differences of physical properties between domestic and foreign yarn specimens for high functional military and technical fabrics are estimated through this study.

  • Chitosan fiber was prepared by wet spinning with various draw ratio. Chitosan fiber was coated with f-carboxymethyl keratein(SCMK) by extruding chitosan solution into 1 M NaOH solution containing 1% SCMK. Among three chitosan used in this study(chitosans of 5 cps, 50 cps, 100 cps), 50 cps chitosan gave the best tenacity and optimum concentration was 5%. SCMK coating increased the tenacity of chitosan fiber. Regardless of SCMK coating, tenacity and elongation of both chitosan fibers were increased with the increase of draw ratio. Chitosan fiber showed antimicrobial activity against Staphyloccus aureus showing 66∼72% of bacteria reduction rates. On the other hand, chitosan fiber coated with SCMK didn't show any antimicrobial activity.

  • Novoloid fibers have high chemical, flame and thermal resistance; however they have low tensile properties. Effects of gamma irradiation on the tensile properties of novoloid fibers have been investigated. Loop and knot resistance have also been examined. Maximum tenacity of the single fiber increased with an increase of the radiation dose applied. According to the loop and knot tenacity results it is found that brittleness has been also affected by the amount of radiation dose.

  • Fall-arrest system have been widely applied to provide a safe stop during fall incidents for occupational activities. This research object to evaluate the energy capacity of fall arrest shock energy absorber lanyard in relation to the used super fiber. In this work, shock energy absorber lanyard was prepared using high tenacity PET, high tenacity PET/P-aramid and high tenacity PET/UHMWPE, respectively. Dynamic load and static load tests based on the Korea fall protection equipment standard(Korea Occupational Safety & Health Agency standard 2013-13) were conducted. Maximum arrest force by dynamic load test of shock energy absorber showed below 6,000N. Also, static strength by static load test of lanyard and rope remains 15,000N and 22,000N for 1 min.

  • High Modulus and high tenacity polypropylene fibers have been prepared by drawing on a gradient heater. Results show that fiber properties are significantly affected by temperature profiles of final stage drawing on a gradient heater. The gradient drawn filaments showed superior mechanical properties when compared to filaments drawn over a constant temperature heater. Fibers with initial modulus of 16.4 GPa and tenacity of 670 MPa have been manufactured in the process. The nature of the gradient drawing had a significant effect on end properties. The superior mechanical properties are attributed to the high crystal perfection and crystallinity and low void fractions obtained at high draw ratios when drawn over a gradient heater.
