  • Bony fusion between the mandibular condyle and skull base involves temporomandibular joint (TMJ) bony ankylosis. This condition might originate from trauma, infection, or systemic disease. TMJ adhesion can develop after synovial damage. Both TMJ ankylosis and adhesion lead to functional impairment and pain. Here, we present a case of a 50-year-old female who had bony ankylosis of the right TMJ and adhesion of the left TMJ. She had otitis media in the right ear. A large mass in the right TMJ was observed on computed tomograph. Magnetic resonance image showed a large fused bone mass with normal bone marrow in the right TMJ and flattening of the condyle with a thin disk in the left TMJ. Gap arthroplasty with temporal fascia was performed on the right TMJ, and discectomy, high condylectomy, and coronoidectomy were performed on the left TMJ. During a 2-year follow-up after surgery, the patient had no recurrence.

  • Emerging evidence suggests that gap formation and opening of the endothelial junctions during leukocyte extravasation is actively controlled to maintain the integrity of the vascular barrier. While the role for endothelial cells to this process has been well defined, it is not clear whether leukocytes are also actively contributing to endothelial barrier function. We have recently showed that extravasating leukocytes deposit microparticles on the subendothelium during the late stages of extravasation, which is LFA-1 dependent. Using multiphotonintravital microscopy (MP-IVM) of mouse cremaster muscle vessels in the current work, we show that microparticle formation and deposition maintains the integrity of the microvascular barrier during leukocyte extravasation. Inhibition of neutrophil-derived microparticle formation resulted in dramatically increased vascular leakage. These findings suggest that deposition of microparticles during neutrophil extravasation is essential for maintaining endothelial barrier function and may result in temporal difference between neutrophil extravasation and an increase in vascular leakage.

  • The strain data acquired from structural health monitoring (SHM) systems play an important role in the state monitoring and damage identification of bridges. Due to the environmental complexity of civil structures, a better understanding of the actual strain data will help filling the gap between theoretical/laboratorial results and practical application. In the study, the multi-scale features of strain response are first revealed after abundant investigations on the actual data from two typical long-span bridges. Results show that, strain types at the three typical temporal scales of $10^5$, $10^2$ and $10^0$ sec are caused by temperature change, trains and heavy trucks, and have their respective cut-off frequency in the order of $10^{-2}$, $10^{-1}$ and $10^0$ Hz. Multi-resolution analysis and wavelet shrinkage are applied for separating and extracting these strain types. During the above process, two methods for determining thresholds are introduced. The excellent ability of wavelet transform on simultaneously time-frequency analysis leads to an effective information extraction. After extraction, the strain data will be compressed at an attractive ratio. This research may contribute to a further understanding of actual strain data of long-span bridges; also, the proposed extracting methodology is applicable on actual SHM systems.

  • The earthquake data(M$\geq$4.0) for post-1900 in the Korean Peninsula show temporal variation with active and quiet periods. The pattern is quite similar to northeastern China and Inner Zone of Southwest Japan. Yeongweol earthquake occurred in the seismic gap region of the Korean Peninsula. This is the first medium-size earthquake in inland region of the southern peninsula since 1978. The intensity based on the felt area estimation of about 400 places shows MMI III-Ⅷ in inland region. IIon Cheju Island and Ion Ulreung Island. The isoseismal of MMI Ⅶ shows an elongated circle in the direction of NE-SW and covers some parts of Jungdong-myon, Yeongweol-kun, Sindong-eup and Nam-myun, Jeongseon-kun. There occurred quite strong shaking, numerous cracks on the walls of buildings, falling and movement of slate and tiles on the roofs, falling of tiles from the wall and falling of materials from desks, rook falling from mountain and collapse of gravel lauers on the river side. The least square fitting of the intensity data of the Yeongweol earthquake by a popular intensity attenuation relation yields the following : I=Io+1.82249 - 0.65295*InR - 0.00707*R

  • We implement numerical simulations for the distributed optical fiber sensor system that uses the spatially-selective Brillouin scattering, by treating the superposition of the optical-frequency-modulated pump/probe waves in the time domain. We obtain temporal and spatial distributions of Brillouin gain for various cases. Simulations are applied to the case of concatenated optical fibers of different kinds and the case of distributed temperature along the fiber, which give reasonable results for the distributed sensor. The result of using a triangular wave instead of a sinusoidal one as a modulation waveform shows that the triangular wave modulation has an advantage in spatial resolution.

  • The combination of congenital stapes fixation and proximal symphalangism has been described in several kindreds. It exhibits autosomal dominant inheritance. A patient, 11-year-old female, visited department of otolaryngology of SNUH in December, 1980. Her complaint was bilateral hearing loss since birth. Physical examination revealed fusion of proximal interphalangeal joints of both 4th and 5th fingers. Tympanic membrane was normal. Temporal bone X-ray was normal. Pure tone audiogram revealed about 60 dB conductive loss with horizontal curve. On exploratory tympanotomy of right side, bony fixation of stapedial footplate was found. So, stapedectomy with connective tissue wire prosthesis was performed. As a result, marked improvement of hearing was obtained with 5 dB A-B gap on operated side.

  • Real estate appraisal methods include profit-based, cost-based and comparison-based measures. The purpose of this study is to scientifically quantify the comparison-based method mostly utilized in valuating real estate property among the appraisal methods. The comparison method is to estimate the value of target property from other previously-traded property cases by comparing and adjusting their temporal gap, spatial gap and space-time gap. In appraisal practices, this comparison method is used generally for land property. If based on previous transactions; prices, time point of transaction, region and individual factors were analyzed to valuate. If based on official land values; official value, time point, region and individual factors are analyzed. Of these, the individual factors are an important process of comparing individual characteristics where real estate appraisers' subjective assessment could intervene. Though appraisers, as experts make generally precise assessment, still, it is a subjective judgment open to difference between appraisers themselves, causing disputes from time to time. In this recognition, the study seeks to quantify such a subjective assessment of appraisers by running GIS analysis on individual factor components including street condition, access condition;and plotting condition.

  • Hydrological models with many parameters and complex model structures require a powerful and detailed model calibration/validation scheme. In this study, we proposed a multi-variable and multi-site calibration and validation framework for the Soil Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model applied in the Gap-cheon catchment located downstream of the Geum river basin. The sensitivity analysis conducted before main calibration helped understand various hydrological processes and the characteristics of subcatchments by identifying sensitive parameters in the model. In addition, the model's parameters were estimated based on existing data prior to calibration in order to increase the validity of model. The Nash-Sutcliffe coefficients and correlation coefficient were used to estimate compare model output with the observed streamflow data: $R_{eff}\;and\;R^2$ ranged 0.41-0.84 and 0.5-0.86, respectively, at the Heuduck station. Model reproduced baseflow estimated using recursive digital filter except for 2-5% overestimation at the Sindae and Boksu stations. Model also reproduced the temporal variability and fluctuation magnitude of observed groundwater levels with $R^2$ of 0.71 except for certain periods. Therefore, it was concluded that the use of multi-variable and multi-site method provided high confidence for the structure and estimated parameter values of the model.

  • This study utilized a cross-temporal meta-analysis to explore shifts in self-efficacy levels among Korean college students from 1999 to 2022. We expected that increases in authoritative parenting styles, narcissism levels among students, and individualism in Korea might have positively influenced the self-efficacy of college students over the years. Conversely, growing economic disparities, decreasing class mobility, and the increasing instability of job markets might have had negative effects on self-efficacy. To investigate this, we analyzed 293 self-efficacy studies involving Korean college students published between 1999 and 2022, encompassing a total of 88,904 participants. Our criteria included studies that used the three most prevalent self-efficacy scales in Korea, focused solely on Korean college students, were cross-sectional with a one-time self-efficacy measurement, and provided essential statistics for our analysis. The results indicated no significant change in the self-efficacy levels of Korean college students over the observed period from 1999 to 2022. Additionally, we examined correlations between self-efficacy and various social indicators from different time points (20, 15, 10, and 5 years prior, as well as the year of data collection). Findings revealed that both birth rate and consumer price fluctuation rate were consistently negatively correlated with self-efficacy, while gross national income was positively correlated. This study is the first to assess Korean college students' self-efficacy levels using a cross-temporal meta-analysis, offering foundational knowledge for implementing such analytical methods for subsequent research and providing an indirect assessment of the generational gap theory. Finally, the limitations of the study and the direction for future research were discussed.

  • This research analyses spatial and temporal characteristics of the academic performances of high school students by using all 2,065,166 SAT scores for 3 years. The spatial inequalities in Seoul are analysed by DBMS and GIS. Based on three-year raw data of Korean SAT scores, the spatial and temporal characteristics of academic performances are scrutinized: 868,029 SAT scores cases of 2000 academic year on Novemver 17, 1999, 609,258 cases in 2005 academic year on November 17, 2004 and 587,890 cases in 2009 on November 13. The result shows that there are significant spatial disparities of the level of academic performance in Seoul by Gu level, also indicating that the disparities are getting wider over the course of time. The widening disparities by Gu level means that educational spatial inequality is intensified in spite of the increasing overall trend of academic performance of Seoul. It is also notable that disparities between regions are distinctive, while those in regions are not significant and sustained constant as time flows.
