The shock tube is a useful device for investigating shock phenomena, spray combustion, unsteady gas dynamics, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze exactly the flow phenomena in shock tube. In this study, the mechanics of its reflected shock zone has been investigated by using of the one-dimensional gas dynamic theory in order to estimate the transition from initial reflection of shock wave region. Calulation for four kinds of reflected shock tube temperature (i.e. (a) 1388 K (b) 1276 K (c) 1168 K (d) 1073 K) corresponding to the experimental conditions have been carried out sumarized as follows. (1) The qualitative tendency is almost the same as in that conditions in region of reflected wave region. (2) High temperature period (reflected shock wave temperature) $T_{5}$, exists 0-2.65 ms. (3) Transition period from temperature of reflection shock wave is far longer than the calculated one. This principally attributed to the fact that the contact surface is accelerated, also, due to the release of energy by viscoity effect. This apparatus can advance the ignition process of a spray in a ideal condition that involved neither atomization nor turbulent mixing process, where, using a shock tube, a column of droplets freely from atomizer was ignited behind a reflected shock.
Thermal shock test methods and thermal shock parameters for ceramics were reviewed from the following viewpoints: (1) The test methods should be based on the precise estimation of both temperature and thermal stress distributions in a specimen taking into account the temperature-dependent thermo-mechanical properties; (2) The thermal shock parameters must be defined as a physical property of the materials and described as a function of temperature at the fracture point of the specimen; (3) The relation between the strength and fracture toughness of brittle ceramics under a thermal shock load must be the same as the relation under a mechanical load. In addition, appropriate thermal shock parameters should be defined by the thermal shock strength and thermal shock fracture toughness based on stress and energy criteria, respectively. A constant heat flux method is introduced as a testing technique suitable for estimating these thermal shock parameters directly from the electric power charged.
Two modes of shock waves, a compression shock wave and a thermal shock wave, propagating in He II have been investigated. The shock waves are at a time generated by the impingement of a gasdynamic shock wave onto a He II free surface in the newly developed superfluid shock tube facility. Superconductive temperature sensors, piezo-type pressure transducers and visualization photograph were used for the measurement of them and the phenomena induced by them were investigated in detail. It is found that the compression by a compression shock wave in He II causes temperature drop because He II has negative thermal expansion coefficient. the thermal shock wave is found to be of a single triangular waveform with a limited shock strength. The waveform is similar to that generated by stepwise strong heating from an electrical heater for relatively long heating time. In the experiments at the temperatures near the lambda temperature, no thermal shock wave is sometimes detected in shock compressed He II. It can be understood that shock compression makes He Ii convert to He I in which no thermal shock wave is excited.
The present work dealt with the high temperature thermal shock properties of 316 stainless steels, in conjunction with a detailed analysis of their microstructures. In particular, the effects of the thermal shock temperature difference and thermal shock cycle number on the properties of 316 stainless steels were investigated. A thermal shock test for 316 stainless steel was carried out at thermal shock temperature differences from $300^{\circ}C$ to $1000^{\circ}C$. The cyclic thermal shock test for the 316 stainless steel was performed at a thermal shock temperature difference of $700^{\circ}C$ up to 100 cycles. The characterization of 316 stainless steels was evaluated using an optical microscope and a three-point bending test. Both the microstructure and flexural strength of 316 stainless steels were affected by the high-temperature thermal shock. The flexural strength of 316 stainless steels gradually increased with an increase in the thermal shock temperature difference, accompanied by a growth in the grain size of the microstructure. However, a thermal shock temperature difference of $800^{\circ}C$ produced a decrease in the flexural strength of the 316 stainless steel because of damage to the material surface. The properties of 316 stainless steels greatly depended on the thermal shock cycle number. In other words, the flexural strength of 316 stainless steels decreased with an increase in the thermal shock cycle number, accompanied by a linear growth in the grain size of the microstructure. In particular, the 316 stainless steel had a flexural strength of about 500 MPa at 100 thermal-shock cycles, which corresponded to about 80% of the strength of the as-received materials.
The thermal shock resistance has been investigated and compared in three hot-work tool steels. The resistance to thermal shock is first of all a matter of good toughness and ductility. Therefore, a proper hot-work tool steel should be characterized by high fracture strength and high temperature toughness. In this study, new test method is proposed to measure the thermal shock resistance. New method is basically based on Uddeholm' thermal shock test but some modification has been properly applied. Based on these results, some critical temperature($T_{fractures}$) at which fracture occur can be measured to characterize the thermal resistance of the materials. The specific values of ${\Delta}T$, the temperature difference between holding temperature and $T_{fractures}$, has been successfully used as a measure of the thermal shock resistance in this study, the results showed that the thermal shock method used in this study was properly modified.
Thermal shock behavior of alumina ceramics were studied by quenching the heated alumina specimen into the water of various temperatures over 0~10$0^{\circ}C$. The critical thermal shock temperature difference ( Tc) of the specimen decreased almost linearly from 275$^{\circ}C$ to 20$0^{\circ}C$ with increase in the cooling water temperature over 0~6$0^{\circ}C$. It is probably due to the increase of the maximum cooling rate which is dependent of the convection heat transfer coefficient. The convection heat transfer coefficient is a function of the temperature of the cooling water. However, the critical thermal shock temperature difference( Tc) of the specimen increased at 25$0^{\circ}C$ over 80~10$0^{\circ}C$ due to the film boiling of the cooling water. The maximum cooling rate, which brings about the maximum thermal stress of the specimen in the cooling process, was observed to increase linearly with the increase in the quenching temperature difference of the specimen due to the linear relationship of the convection heat transfer coefficient with the water temperature over 0~6$0^{\circ}C$. The critical maximum cooling rate for thermal shock fracture was observed almost constant to be about 260$\pm$1$0^{\circ}C$/s for all water temperatures over 0~6$0^{\circ}C$. Therefore, thermal shock behavior of alumina ceramics is greatly influenced by the convection heat transfer coefficient of the cooling water.
Two modes of shock waves propagating in He II (superfluid helium), this is a compression and a thermal shock waves, were studied experimentally by using superconductive temperature sensors, piezo pressure transducers and Schlieren visualization method with an ultra-high-speed video camera (40,500 pictures/sec). The shock waves are induced by a gas dynamic shock wave impingement upon a He II free surface. It is found that the shock Mach number of a transmitted compression shock wave is up to 1.16, and the shock Mach number of a thermal shock wave coincides well with the second sound velocity under each compressed He II state condition. The temperature rise ratio of an induced thermal shock wave to that of an incident gas dynamic shock wave was found to be very small, as small as 0.003 at 1.80K.
In this paper we present computation of a reflected shock in the hypersonic flow of air with chemical reactions. We consider two dimensional steady inviscid hypersonic flow of air around bodies including chemical reaction effects. At a high Mach number, a strong shock is formed in front of the body when a wedge is placed against the flow. In front of the shock, temperature and pressure increase greatly and the flow is in nonequilibrium state. If the shock hits a wall, then a reflected shock is formed in the nonequilibrium flow region. Behind this reflected shock, the temperature and pressure are very high. We carry out the computation of the reflected shock and the flow behind it. The jump conditions at the reflected shock are presented. A technique combining smooth transforms of domain and implicit difference methods is used to overcome numerical difficulties associated with the lack of resolution behind the shock and near the body.
The heat shock responses of Campylobacter jejuni were studied by examination of their survival rates and synthesis of heat shocd proteins. When C. jejuni cells were treated at the sublethal temperatures of 48.deg.C for 30 minutes, most of the cells maintained their viabilities and synthesized the heat shock proteins of 90, 73, and 66 kD in molecular weight. By the method of two-dimensional electrophoresis, the heat shock proteins of C. jejuni were identified to be Hsp90, Hsp73, and Hsp66. During the heat shock at 48.deg.C, the heat shock proteins were induced from about 5 minutes after the heat shock treatment. Their synthesis was continued upto 30 minutes, but remarkably retarded after 50 minutes. When C. jejune cells were heat shocked at 51.deg.C for 30 minutes, the survival rates of the cells were decreased by about $10^{3}$ fold and synthesis of heat shock proteins and normal proteins was also generally retarded. The cells exposed to 55.deg.C for 30 minutes died off by more than $10^{5}$ cells and the new protein synthesis was not observed. But when C. jejuni cells were heat-shocked at the sublethal temperature of 48.deg.C for 15 to 20 minutes and then were exposed at the lethal temperature of 55.deg.C for 30 minutes, their viabilities were higher than those exposed at 55.deg.C for 30 minutes without pre-heat shock at 48.deg.C. Therefore, the heat shock proteins synthesized at the sublethal temperature of 48.deg.C in C. jejuni were thought to be responsible for thermotolerance. However, when C. jejuni cells heat-shocked at various ranges of sublethal and lethal temperatures were placed back to the optimum temperature of 42.deg.C, the multiplication patterns of the cells pretreated at different temperatures were not much different each other.
Metal matrix composites(MMCs) are rapidly becoming one of the strongest candidates for structural materials for many high temperature application. Among the high temperature environment, thermal shock is known to cause significant degradation in most MMC system. Therefore, the nondestructive evaluation on thermal shock damage behavior of SiC/A16061 composite has been carried out using ultrasonic surface and SH-waves. For this study, Sic fiber reinforced metal matrix composite specimens fabricated by a squeeze casting technique were thermally cycled in the temperature range 25~$400^{\circ}C$ up to 1000 cycles. Three point bend test was conducted to investigate the effect of thermal shock damage on mechanical properties. The relationship between thermal shock damage behavior and the change of ultrasonic velocity and attenuation were discussed by considering SEM observation of fracture surface.
