  • In order to investigate behavior of abnormal expansion of the iron-copper compacts, we compared the dilatometric curves of the compacts which mixed the copper powder to the iron powder with those of compacts which mixed the copper powder to the iron-copper alloy powder. The dilatometric curves were obtained below the sintering conditions, which heated up to 115$0^{\circ}C$ by a heating rate of 1$0^{\circ}C$/min, held for 60min at 115$0^{\circ}C$ and cooled down at a rate of 2$0^{\circ}C$/min to room temperature. The dilatometric curves of the compacts showed the different expansion behavior at temperatures above the copper melting point in spite of same chemical composition. All of the compacts of former case showed large expansion, but all of the compacts in latter case showed large contraction. The microstructures of sintered compacts also showed the different progress in alloying of the copper into the iron powder. Namely we could observe the segregation at alloy part of copper into iron powder in case of the sintered compacts, which mixed the copper powder to the iron powder, but could not observe the segregation in compacts which mixed the copper powder to the iron-copper alloy powder. But the penetration of liquid copper into the interstices between solid particles was occurred at both cases. Therefore, the showing of the different dimensional changes in the compacts in spite of same chemical composition is due to more the alloying of copper into iron powder than the penetration of liquid copper into the interstices between solid particles.

  • Polyorganosiloxane(HBPS) modified polyurethane (UMPS) was synthesized to improve weatherability in the polyurethane (ITPU) sealant and its rheological propoerty was investigated. It was found that the viscosity increased with increasing HBPS content in polyurethane and maximum viscosity was observed in UMPS having 70/30 ITPU/HBPS ratio. This was understood that the segregation of HBPS segment in UMPS chain has been developed. Further increasing of the content of HBPS resulted in the lowering of viscosity because of the flexibility of HBPS block segment in UMPS chain. It was also found that UMPS has more sensitive environmental dependency of viscosity than ITPU such as shear rate, humidity and temperature. In additions, UMPS having Si(O$CH_3$)$_3$ end group (TUMPS) by adding coupling agent up to 0.3 wt% resulted in the increase of viscosity by the acceleration of curing. But introducing more than 0.5wt% curing agent to TUMPS caused the lowering of viscosity because of less NCO group in TUMPS for the curing.

  • This study aims to mitigate the microstructural heterogeneity arising from the manufacture of magnesium alloy plates using the twin roll casting (TRC) process. Homogenization was introduced through hot rolling and heat treatment, followed by confirmation of observed changes in the microstructure. Following the TRC process, the hot rolled 2mm plate exhibited a dendritic cast structure tilted in the roll rotation direction, while central segregation were developed. This nonuniform structure and central segregation disappeared upon heat treatment, followed by recrystallization to form uniform and fine grains. Abnormal grain growth (AGG) was observed over the course of heat treatment; grains exhibiting AGG occupied up to 75% of the total area after having held the sample at 400℃ for 64 h. The formation of coarse grains was also observed during heat treatment at 340℃ over a relatively long duration, though the maximum grain size was significantly smaller than that corresponding to the heat treatment at 400℃. AGG in the 400℃ heat treatment occurred because of movement of the grain boundary, which had been fixed prior as a result of the grain boundary fixing effect of the precipitation phase. The re-dissolution of the Ca2Mg5Zn5 precipitated phase over the long duration of the high-temperature annealing process caused the surrounding grains to disappear and regrow.

  • In order to investigate the origin of an increase in the coercivity with the Ta addition to Co-Cr films, the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of Co-Cr film and CoCrTa film was measured by a torque magnetometer and VSM. In Co-Cr binary alloy film, the uniaxial anisotropy increased with increasing Cr content. The perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of $Co_{81.7}Cr_{16.7}Ta_{1.6}$ film was larger than that of $Co_{81}Cr_{19}$ film, both of which were deposited at the same substrate temperature of $100^{\circ}C$. The change in the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy with annealing was studied to understand the Ta addition effect. The amount of decrease in perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the CoCrTa film by the annealing was larger than that of Co-Cr film. And the perpendicular magnetic anisotripies of Co-Cr film and CoCrTa film after annealing were almost the same. The cause of this was interpretated as the enhanced segregation of solute atoms in the Ta added thin film in the as-deposited state. The enhanced segregation of solute atoms increases the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of the film, and causes the increase of perpendicular coercivity of the film.

  • The purpose of this study Is to investigate the effect of $V_2$O$_{5}$ addition on the microstructures and magnetic properties of 7.7${\times}$4.5${\times}$1.0 mm sized multi-layer chip inductors prepared by the screen printing method using 0∼0.5 wt% $V_2O_{5}$-doped NiCuZn ferrite pastes. With increasing the $V_2O_{5}$ content, the exaggerated grain growth of ferrite layers was developed due to the promotion of Ag diffusion and Cu segregation into the grain boundaries oi ferrites, which affected significantly the magnetic properties of the chip inductors. After sintering at $900^{\circ}C$, the inductance at 10 MHZ of the 0.5 wt% $V_2O_{5}$-doped chip inductor was 3.7 ${\mu}$H less than 4.2 ${\mu}$H of the 0.3 wt% $V_2O_{5}$-doped one, which was thought to be caused by the residual stress at the ferrite layers increased with the promotion of Ag diffusion and Cu segregation. The quality factor of the 0.5 wt% $V_2O_{5}$-doped chip inductor decreased with increasing the sintering temperature, which was considered to be caused by the electrical resistivity of the ferrite layer decreased with the promotion of Ag/cu segregation at the grain boundaries and the growth of the mean grain size of ferrite due to exaggerated grain growth of ferrite layers.

  • Most of land reclamation projects are being implemented along the south and west coastal lines of the Korean Peninsula. The earth structures and in-ground LNG tank, and buildings can be constructed using artificial freezing method on the reclaimed land to control the uplift pressure caused by capillary forces. In this study, upon freezing a saturated soil in a closed-system from the top, a considerable frost heaving pressure was developed. Decomposed granite soils, silty soil, and sandy soil were used in the laboratory freeze test which is sometimes subjected to thermal gradients under closed-systems. A major concern has been the ability to predict the frost heaving pressure over the results of relatively short-term laboratory tests. The frost heaving pressure arising within the soil samples and the temperature of the samples inside were monitored with time elapse. The degree of saturation versus heaving pressure curve is presented for each soil sample and the maximum pressure is closely related to this curve. TDR apparatus was used to measure the volumetric water content by the measurement of unfrozen water contents of frozen soils. Unfrozen water increased in soils containing a high percentage of fine-grained particles. In fine-grained soils with strong attractive farces between soil grains and water molecules, additional water is attracted into the pores leading to further volume changes and ice segregation.

  • The microstructure and corrosion behavior of commercially dental casting gold alloys were investigated to clarify the effect of burn-out temperature and cooling rate. In the case of water quenching after casting, only the αphase, which is typical dendritic microstructure of golda alloy, was detected. However, the precipitates along the grain boundary were detected only at the slow cooling rate and they increased inversely proportional to the burn-out temperature. This might be due to the time difference which solute atom could diffuse. EPMA and SEM results also demonstrated that the precipitate should be lamellar structure consisted of Ag rich phase(${\alpha}_1$) and Cu rich phase (${\alpha}_2$). In terms of corrosion, the galvanic coupling was formed due to the difference of composition between precipitates and matrix at the slow cooling rate. In the case of water quenching, the critical current density($i_p$) which indicate the degree of corrosion was lowest at $650^{\circ}C$ and below the burnout temperature, $i_p$ increased with it because of the effect of grain boundary segregation. But above the temperature, $i_p$ increased with it. This may be due to the strain field effect by residual thermal stress.

  • The transition of serrated grain boundary and its effect on liquation behavior in the simulated weld heat-affected zone (HAZ) have been investigated in a wrought Ni-based superalloy Alloy 263. Recently, the present authors have found that grain boundary serration occurs in the absence of adjacent coarse ${\gamma}^{\prime}$ particles or $M_{23}C_6$ carbides when a specimen is direct-aged with a combination of slow cooling from solution treatment temperature to aging temperature. The present study was initiated to determine the interdependence of the serration and HAZ property with a consideration of this serration as a potential for the use of a hot-cracking resistant microstructure. A crystallographic study indicated that the serration led to a change in grain boundary character as special boundary with a lower interfacial energy as those terminated by low-index {111} boundary planes. It was found that the serrated grain boundaries are highly resistant to boron enrichment, and suppress effectively grain coarsening in HAZ. Furthermore, the serrated grain boundaries showed a higher resistance to susceptibility of liquation cracking. These results was discussed in terms of a significant decrease in interfacial energy of grain boundary by the serration.

  • We have successfully grown colorless and transparent Rb-doped potassium niobate (KRN) single crystals using the top seeded solution growth(TSSG) technique. In our crystal growth experiments, the Rb doping concentrations within the melt range from 2-15 mol% relative to that of Nb$_2$O5. Atomic absorption measurements indicate that the Rb content in the KRN solid solution is rather low; the Rb segregation coefficient is found to be on the order of 0.05. It is believed that this is due to the relatively much larger Rb+ ionic radius compared to that of K+, rendering it more difficult for Rb to replace K in the KNbO$_3$(KN) host lattice. Preliminary single-pass second harmonic generation (SHG) experimental results indicate that there exists marginal improvement in the phase-matching temperature tolerance of KRN compared to that of pure Kn single crystals.

  • The upset forging stage is the initial work in the forging process. It is used to remove the segregation and cavities of the ingot. Specially in handling large sized ingot, an improper upset forging can cause serious surface tearing. However, there is no detail reference for stable upset forging work. To resolve this difficulty, we studied several factors such as upset forging time, temperature varation of ingot, damage, load and stain rate etc., by using the rigid-plastic finite element approach available in the DEFORM code. Numerical simulation results indicated that: the load value of upset forging works shows severe decreasing trend at a certain point, same as strain rate. Also defects were found to be concentrated around the upper and lower portions of the ingot. With these results, we can estimate a guideline for stable upset forging work.
