  • By analyzing the sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll ${\alpha}$, zooplankton and Orview/SeaWiFS satellite data in the Korean Waters from 1999 to 2001, we studied the seasonal and annual variation of chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration and zooplankton biomass. Sea surface temperature was fluctuated with the typical seasonal variation in the waters of temperate zone. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration and zooplankton biomass were high in spring and autumn. Year to year fluctuations on annual averaged chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations in Korean Waters in the spring from 1999 to 2001 were decreased continuously. On the other hand, the estimated chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations derived from SeaWiFS ocean color data were lower than the measured sea surface chlorophyll a in the Korean Waters.

  • Chub mackerel Scomber japonicus is an economically important pelagic species in the western North Pacific. In the last 50 years, the annual total catch in Korean waters showed large fluctuations, ranging from 100 to $420{\times}10^3tons$. To provide a biological reference point for management of chub mackerel, we applied a simulation-based yield-per-recruit (Y/R) model that considered both temperature-dependent growth and size-dependent mortality. We estimated the fisheries yield with respect to varying biological reference points and environmental conditions, including 1) the instantaneous rate of fishing mortality (F), 2) length of fish at first capture ($L_c$), and 3) water temperature. The result of our analysis showed that the Y/R could be greatest when the $L_c$ ranges from 19-27 cm and F ranges from $1.48-2.00yr^{-1}$. Y/R increases with increased water temperature between 15 and $23^{\circ}C$. We suggest targeting an $L_c$ of 17 cm (age=0.6 years) under the assumed current of $F=0.48yr^{-1}$ for maximizing the chub mackerel harvest. Further analysis considering spawning and recruitment processes are required to provide biological reference points to ensure the sustainability of chub mackerel fisheries in Korean waters.

  • The abnormal cooling phenomenon occurred in the coastal areas of East Sea of Korea in summer, 1981 is studied on the basis of the oceanographical data obtained by the National Fisheries University of Pusan, in July, 1981 and by Fisheries Research and Development Agency of Korea during 1961 to 1981 and by Japan Meteorological Agency in 1975 and 1981. Th vertical section of temperature along 130 E showed that the warmer waters more than 10 C occupied at upper layer of about 75m depth in south of 35 30'N the layer changed rapidly thinner as 20m th 30m depth. In the areas of East Sea during 1966 to 1981, the temperature fluctuations at 100m depth ranged greatly in standard deviation from 2 C to 4 C. The temperature anomaly in 1981 was about 1.5 times of the standard deviation and at the upper layer of 150m depth the temperatures became colder by 5 -10 C than average values in August, 1961-1975. The 10 C isotherm at 100m depth in 1981 appeared between 35 and 36 N, shifting southward 20 to 120 miles than mean year. These results showed that the abnormal cooling phenomenon in the areas of East Sea of Korea in summer occurred mose predominantly in 1981 in period from 1966 to 1981

  • 400RT geothermal system which is the biggest capacity among on-operations at present in Korea is measured and evaluated on 23rd${\sim}$26th Jan. 2008 during those days building is not allowed owners and/or tenants to move in. The geothermal system is consist with vertical-typed 112 geothermal heat exchangers which are installed circle-like 1 row with 4m interval, and has 16 units of 25USRT geothermal-source heat pump(GSHP)s. And each 5 units of circulation pump are running for geothermal heat exchangers and hot water supplies. The followings are the results. The temperatures at G.L. -70m of 2 boreholes are varied quite similarly. The average temperature difference between inlet and outlet of geothermal pipes is $4.1^{\circ}C$, and that of hot water supply is $3.2^{\circ}C$, of Zone 3's each 4 GSHPs when being operated. Despite temperature fluctuations by heating loads, the average temperature difference between main pipes of inlet and outlet of geothermal heat exchangers is measured as $4.1^{\circ}C$. This study propose "Geothermal System COP" which includes not only consumed electric power by compressor but also circulation pumps and auxiliary utilities. By comparing the geothermal system COP with GSHP's performance specification, it is clear that the performances of GHSPs of this site are satisfied with the specification.

  • Couplings between electric, magnetic, and structural order parameters result in the so-called multiferroic phenomena with two or more ferroic phenomena such as ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism, or ferroelasticity. The simultaneous ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism (magnetoelectricity) permits potential applications in information storage, spintronics, and magnetic or electric field sensors. The perovskite BiFeO3(BFO) is known to be antiferromagnetic below the Neel temperature of 647K and ferroelectric with a high Curie temperature of 1043K. It exhibits weak magnetism at room temperature due to the residual moment from a canted spin structure. It is likely that non-stoichiometry and second-phase formation are the factors responsible for leakage current in BFO. It has been suggested that oxygen non-stoichiometry leads to valence fluctuations of Fe ions in BFO, resulting in high conductivity. To reduce the large leakage current of BFO, one attempt is to make donor-doped BFO compounds and thin films. In this study, (Bi1-x,Ndx)(Fe1-y,Tiy)O3 thin films have been deposited on Pt(111)/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The effect of dopants on the phase evolution and surface morphology are analyzed. Furthermore, electrical and magnetic properties are measured and their coupling characteristics are discussed.

  • Both ultrasonic velocity at 3 MHz and absorption coefficient in the frequency range of 0.2-2 MHz were measured for poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) aqueous solution over the concentration range of 5 to 25 % by weight. Pulse echo overlap method was employed to measure the ultrasonic velocity over the temperature range of 10-90 ℃ and the high-a ultrasonic resonator method was used for the absorption coefficient measurement at 20 ℃. The velocity exhibited a maximum value at approximately 55. 59, 63. 67, and 71 ℃ in 25, 20. 15, 10. and 5 wt% solutions, respectively. The velocity increased with poly (sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) concentration at a given temperature. The concentrations dependences of the relaxation frequency and amplitude showed that the relaxation around 200 kHz is related to the structural fluctuations of polymer molecules, such as the segmental motions of the polymer chains and that around 1 MHz resulted from the proton transfer reaction of the oxygen sites of SO₃. Both the absorption and the shear viscosity increase with the Polymer concentration. but decrease with temperature.

  • In order to understand on the seasonal dynamics of phytoplankton in the mouth parts of Gamak Bay, Korea, we investigated from one station during June 2005 to June 2006. Samples were collected every week during the high water temperature (${\geq}20^{\circ}C$), and every two weeks during the low water temperature (${\leq}20^{\circ}C$). The phytoplankton community were composed of 76 genera, 208 species in the surface layer, and 72 genera, 186 species in the bottom layer (total: 77 genera, 214 species). The number of occurring species fluctuated greatly throughout the year from 27 species (March 15, 2006) to 121 species (Aug. 16, 2005). High number of species showed between June and September (>70 species), whereas the low number of species showed during the period of the low water temperature below $20^{\circ}C$ (ca. 40 species). The predominant species were diatom Skeletonema costatum during whole year, and two naked dinoflagellates, Cochlodinium polykrikoides and Polykrikos kofoidii during high temperature seasons. However, centric diatoms, Chaetoceros curvisetus, Chaetoceros debilis and Eucampia zodiacus were dominant species during low temperature seasons. Standing crops of dinoflagellate showed great fluctuations, which were ranged from $3.0{\times}10^5\;cells\;L^{-1}$ (April 17, 2006) to $7.3{\times}10^5\;cells\;L^{-1}$ (Aug. 2, 2005) in the surface layer and from $1.5{\times}10^3\;cells\;L^{-1}$ (Nov. 9, 2005) to $3.9{\times}10^5\;cells\;L^{-1}$ (Aug. 16, 2005) in the bottom layer, and showed high during high temperature seasons such as the number of species. The fluctuations were greater in the surface layer than in the bottom layer. Moreover, the variation of Cochlodinium polykrikoides, is affected by Polykrikos kofoidii grazing.

  • Oceanic conditions in walleye pollock habitat in the East Sea have shown decadal fluctuations between warm and cold periods in turn. Specifically, sea surface temperature (SST) has shown a dramatic increase between the late 1980s and the middle 2000s, and abrupt decreasing patterns after the late 2000s. Oceanic conditions in the Dong-han Bay (spawning ground) and middle eastern coastal waters (fishing ground), however, indicated different fluctuation trends in SST, increasing in the Dong-han Bay after the late 1980s, and decreasing after the late 2000s. These fluctuation patterns were especially clear in February and March. Sea surface temperature in the middle eastern coastal waters of Korea soared continuously after the late 1980s, but did not show a distinct decreasing pattern after the late 2000s compared with Dong han Bay, except for February SST values. These long term water temperature changes in both walleye pollock spawning and fishing ground are related to variation in walleye pollock landings. Especially, abrupt changes in spawning ground SST can be one of the factors influencing survival in the early ontogenesis of walleye pollock, including egg and yolk larval stages. During the 1980s, the area of suitable spawning temperature (2-5℃) was wider, and the length of Walleye pollock egg and larval stages greater compared with past and present oceanographic environments. However, such patterns did not correspond with the optimal spawning temperature range and greater length of development of walleye pollock during the late 1980s likely triggering a decline in pollock stock. In conclusion, it has been supposed that the dramatic decrease in walleye pollock landings in the East Sea since the late 1980s was caused by increasing water temperature leading to both early mortality and unsuitable spawning conditions.

  • Low water temperature during the summer associated with the occurrence of cold water zone off Haeundae was studied using the data from CTD observations and a monitoring buoy deployed in Suyeong Bay. Shortterm variability of current was dominant and was not related to the wind. The NE-SW components of wind parallel to the coast contained more than 96% of total variance and could account for major fluctuations of water temperature. Upwelling-response of water temperature was very sensitive so that the temperature began to decrease immediately after the onset of the southwesterly wind. In particular, there were three cases in which SW winds for only two days caused considerable temperature drops. In 2009, four upwelling events shorter than 5 days took place while seven events with periods of 2~18 days were recorded in 2010. During a very intense upwelling for seven days in mid-August 2010, temperature decreased by more than $10^{\circ}C$ in spite of the variable winds. Temperature variability at Gampo, Ulsan, Gijang and Haeundae had similar patterns. CTD observation and satellite imagery showed that the upwelling zone could be extended to the Haeundae-Busan area. According to the wavelet analysis, coherent periods were 2~8 days during the frequent upwelling/downwelling events.
