We divided the consumer education of “the Informational Society” into 4 fields of studies(consumer information technique, decision making on purchasing, consumer financial management, and consumerism) and made specific analysis for this research. The “Technology & Home Economics” textbook which follows ‘The 7th curriculum’ conducted by “Korean Educational Board” Ministry of Education & Human Resources Development for first and second grade in middle school were used for this analysis. The results founded are as follows: first, for the curriculum analysis according to the 4 fields of consumer education, both the first and the second grade students' textbook had consumer information technique as the major portion of the consumer education. Second, as a result of the comparison between the two grade levels showed that the second grade level has higher portion of consumer education in “Home economics & Technology” textbook than the first grade level. Third, the present status of consumer education showed that the first grade level's consumer education was only limited in consumer information technique, but the second grade level's consumer education was ranging evenly throughout the 3 fields of consumer education: consumer information technique, decision making on purchasing and consumerism. These results of this study contribute to the development of an efficient and desirable curriculum for the adolescent' consumer education, specially for school consumer education, in “the Informational Society”.

  • This study aimed to suggest measures expand career-related elective subjects in the high schools through a case of establishing and utilizing a learning space for hands-on home economics classroom activities. Upon the trend reviews of elective subjects in the high school and literature reviews on the educational outcomes from home economics classrooms, a case of career-related elective subject by establishment of learning space related to home economics was proposed in two high schools in Seoul. The results are as follows: First, the trend in 2020 showed that selecting a home economics course as a career-related subject depends on school situations. The results of the survey at schools show that the utilization rate of hands-on learning space for home economics was high with high preference among students, but schools implicitly guided students to select courses that are related to preparation for university entrance. Second, reductions of class hours and decreased likelihood to offer courses in home economics in general high schools would influence the recruitment of teachers, which may ultimately result in a threat to the subject. However, through career-related activities, students may develop positive perception of the subject of home economics and consequently select the subject. Therefore, it is necessary to open and promote multiple elective courses related to home economics for the survival of subject of home economics.

  • This study examined the association among practical teaching competence (PTC) and teaching efficacy (TE), and explored the mediation effects of theoretical teaching competence (TTC) between the PTC and TE of Practical Arts (Technology and Home Economics Education) teachers. Data were collected from the 301 survey responses completed by elementary, middle, and high school teachers. All teachers showed high levels of PTC, TTC, and TE. Elementary school teachers perceived higher PTC than middle and high school teachers. PTC, TTC, TE showed significant effect in regards to teacher's age and teaching career. Using multiple regression analysis, this study found that TTC fully mediated PTC and TE of elementary school teachers. For middle and high school teachers, there was a partial mediation effect of TTC in the relationship between PTC and TE. This study suggests that teacher education programs should develop a program that can enhance teaching efficacy by cultivating TTC and support teachers who want to strengthen competence, and more practical opportunities to practice teaching.

The eating habit unit in 'technology home economics' was taught with respect to 509 middle school 1st grade students, and preference acknowledgement were examined. Study results revealed that the level of acknowledgement for eating habit unit was positive while majority of the students thought that education contents were emphasized on the theory mainly because of insufficient class hours. Therefore, in order to let students know them better and make the best use of them, it is required to increase the class hours and research opportunity for practice class related with daily life. Through the middle school 'technology home economics' eating habit unit education, positive effect in part of eating habit area was observed and nutrition knowledge was enhanced after the education in both male and female students group. Judging from the results, less enhancement was observed in eating habit compared to the nutrition knowledge increase. • The purpose of this study is two-fold. One is to provide the teachers of Home Economics with the basic reference data of the relevance between Home Economics and other subjects taught in the middle schools for the purpose of bringing out more efficient classroom teaching. The other is to help the teachers, the textbook writers, and the curriculum reformers improve the curricula of the middle school on the basis of this research. The conclusions drawn from this study are as follows: 1) The units of Human Development and Family Relationship should be taught with reference to Korean Language, Ethics, and Music. 2) The unit of Adolescence Development is dealt with in Physical Education and in Ethics as well, which seems to indicate that there was no interdisciplinary consideration and cooperation before/when the curricula were made. 3) The unit of Nutrition which appears in the first grade in Home Economics has a close relationship with the unit of Morphology and Physiology of Animals which appears in the second grade in Natural Science. It is thought that the interdisciplinary themes ought to be organized cooperatively among subjects for efficiency of study. 4) Since the unit of Clothing is not dealt with in the other subjects, ti can be developed in Home Economics on its own. 5) As the unit of Housing is closely related to Technology, it should be taught on the basis of Technology. 6) The textbooks of all subjects should be written based on the interdisciplinary research and cooperation. They should be organized in order not to overlap or repeat the same topic in the same level if it is not necessary.

Students have similar preference both for theories and for practical activities as a way of learning in class and show positive responses to practical activities unless they´re giving too much pressure as a part of performance test. 3. According to their learning requirement. several teaching-learning contents in clothing and textiles in Technology Home economics are selected such as materials,. clothes designs, how to set dressed well, how to make a reasonable purchase on clothes, and the process of manufacturing various clothes, etc. Therefore it would be desirable to provide the students with the learning opportunity to the extent where even the students who haven´t chosen the selected-advanced course can take part in class actively.
