  • A comprehensive coverage of corrosion in batteries is rendered difficult by the wide choice of materials, environments and physical features as obtained in practical settings. Understanding of the complex processes that occur in these electrochemical systems gets clearer as new theoretical approaches backed by sophisticated analytical and characterization techniques continue to provide valuable insights which aid in controlling/mitigating wasteful corrosion reactions which affect battery shelf-life, cycle life, rate capability and capacity. In the light of the above, I limit myself to a discussion on corrosion aspects in representative system such as conventional Leclanche, lead-acid battery and magnesium batteries, and advanced lithium systems.

  • The recent increase in digital audio media has greatly expanded the size and diversity of sound data, which has increased the importance of sound data analysis in the digital forensics process. However, the lack of standardized procedures and guidelines for sound data analysis has caused problems with the consistency and reliability of analysis results. The digital environment includes a wide variety of audio formats and recording conditions, but current audio forensic methodologies do not adequately reflect this diversity. Therefore, this study identifies Life-Cycle-based sound data elemental technologies and provides overall guidelines for sound data analysis so that effective analysis can be performed in all situations. Furthermore, the identified elemental technologies were analyzed for use in the development of digital forensic techniques for sound data. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the life-cycle-based sound data elemental technology identification system presented in this study, a case study on the process of developing an emergency retrieval technology based on sound data is presented. Through this case study, we confirmed that the elemental technologies identified based on the Life-Cycle in the process of developing digital forensic technology for sound data ensure the quality and consistency of data analysis and enable efficient sound data analysis.

  • Analysis data of basics which are used for LCC(Life Cycle Cost) analysis of buildings and maintenance plan, are demanded to secure according as replacement cycle of repairs of apartment houses has come. However, investigation techniques and systems for investigating condition of deterioration of apartment houses, have not been made yet in Korea. For this reason, this study was wanted to make investigation techniques and systems, so the process for maintenance of apartment houses was researched and the required quality and deterioration factors of interior/exterior materials were investigated. As a result Check-List for investigating condition of deterioration, was made. if this is used during a nonscheduled, a routine, a regular and a urgency check, the methodical investigation will be achieved. Furthermore, if this is used for maintenance of apartment houses, it will be helped to select the repair cycle and the long-term repair plan.

  • Visual and color in Korean newspaper advertisements appeared in transformational advertising (21cm$\times$30.4cm) were analyzed. Data were gathered from 191 advertisements shown on major four daily newspaper; Dong-a, Joong-ang, Chosun and Hanguk from October to December in 2000. From the results of this research, both type of layout and color are proposed more variety by this researcher. Mixed production techniques are used in newspaper advertising. Also, more foreign advertising model are expected near future. Finally, product life cycle have relationship with each layout elements. In other words, based on the stage of product life cycle layout elements are changed respectively.

  • This paper proposes a shortest path allocation algorithm over the processors on the hypercube system based on the message passing techniques with the optimized module allocation. On multiprocessor systems, how to divide one task into multiple tasks efficiently is an important issue due to the hardness of the life cycle estimation of each process. To solve the life cycle discrepancies, the appropriate task assignment to each processor and the flexible communications among the processors are indispensible. With the concurrent program execution on hypercube systems, each process communicaties to others with the method of message passing. And, each processor has its own memory. The proposed algorithm generates a callable tree out of the module, assigns the weight factors, constructs the allocation graph, finds the shortest path allocation tree, and maps them with hypercube.

  • Building energy use estimation relies on building characteristics, its energy systems, occupants, and weather. Energy estimation of new buildings is considerably an easy task when compared to modeling existing buildings as they require calibration with actual data. Particularly, when energy estimation of existing building stock is warranted at a city-scale, the problem is exacerbated owing to lack of construction drawings and other engineering specifications. However, as collection of buildings and other infrastructure constitute cities, such predictions are a necessary component of developing and maintaining sustainable cities. This paper uses Artificial Neural Network techniques to predict electricity consumption for residential buildings situated in the City of Gainesville, Florida. With the use of 32,813 samples of data vectors that comprise of building floor area, built year, number of stories, and range of monthly energy consumption, this paper extends the prediction to environmental impact assessment of electricity usage at the urban-scale. Among others, one of the applications of the proposed model discussed in this paper is the study of urban scale Life Cycle Assessment, and other decisions related to creating sustainable cities.

  • High pressure components of a gas turbine engine must operate for a long life under severe conditions in order to maximize the performance and minimize the maintenance cost. Enhanced cooling design, thermal barrier coating techniques, and nickel-base superalloys have been applied for overcoming them and furthermore, material modeling, finite element analysis, statistical techniques, and etc. in design stage have been utilized widely. This article aims to evaluate the effects on the low cycle fatigue life of the high pressure turbine nozzle caused by different turbine inlet temperature profiles and installation conditions and to investigate the most favorable operating condition to the turbine nozzle. To achieve it, the structural analysis, which utilized the results of conjugate heat transfer analysis as loading boundary conditions, was performed and its results were the input for the assessment of low cycle fatigue life at several critical zones.

  • Generally, the mechanical components and structures are joined by many welding techniques, and therefore the welded joints are inevitable in the construction of structures. The Alloy 617 was initially developed for high temperature applications above $800^{\circ}C$. It is often considered for use in aircraft and gas turbines, chemical manufacturing components, and power generation structures. Especially, the Alloy 617 is the primary candidate for construction of intermediate heat exchanger (IHX) on a very high temperature reactor (VHTR) system. In the present paper, the low cycle fatigue (LCF) life of Alloy 617 base metal (BM) and the gas tungsten arc welded (GTAWed) weld joints (WJ) are evaluated by using the previous experimental results under strain controlled LCF tests. The LCF tests have been performed at room temperature with total strain ranges of 0.6, 0.9, 1.2 and 1.5%. The LCF lives for the BM and WJ have been evaluated from the Coffin-Manson and strain energy based life methods. For both the BM and WJ, the LCF lives predicted by both Coffin-Manson and strain energy based life methods was found to well coincide with the experimental data.

  • High pressure nozzles and turbines of a gas turbine engine should be required to be operated under extreme operating conditions in order to maximize the performance. Engine manufactures have utilized nickel-base superalloys, enhanced cooling design, and thermal barrier coating techniques to overcome them and furthermore, material modeling, finite element analysis, optimization techniques, and etc. have been utilized widely for elaborate predictions. We aim to evaluate the effects on the low cycle fatigue life of the high pressure turbine blade caused by thermal barrier coatings and the cooling design of the endwall of the first stage turbine nozzle. To achieve it, the structural analysis, which utilized the results of conjugate heat transfer analysis as loading boundary conditions, was performed and then the results were the input for the assessment of low cycle fatigue life at several critical zones.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a method for the efficient preventive maintenance of aircraft gas turbine engine turbine blades. For this study, the types and characteristics of gas turbine engines and its turbine blades were studied, the turbine blade defect types that caused an In-Flight Shut Down(IFSD) were analyzed, the blade failure rate according to the blade life cycle was analyzed through the Weibull distribution, one of the statistical techniques. Through these research results, it is possible to supplement the problems of the life cycle management and maintenance method of the turbine blade, and to suggest the measures to strengthen the preventive maintenance of the turbine blade. In this analysis, when total cycle of turbine blade exceeds 18,000 cycles, the failure rate is over 98%, and then the special management measures are required.
