  • The mechanical strengths of buried lamellar tears located near the weld toe in the welded tee joints were evaluated in terms of the loss of load carrying capacity as a function of tear area. In static loading, the load carrying capacity was significantly reduced when tear intercepted over 10% of the cross-sectional area of the welded joints. However, the welded joints containing buried tears still failed at stresses over the yield strength of the base metal in the through-thickness direction in spite of the presence of tears up to 20-25% of the area. Fatigue strength of welded joints containing tears markedly reduced with increasing tear areas. Lehigh lamellar tearing test used in this study to produce speicmens was described in detail. The load carrying cpapacity in static loading was influenced by the reduction of supporting area whereas that in fatigue loading was influenced by the stress-concentration effects of lamellar tears and the reduction of supporting area. In bend tests, the pre-existing lamellar tears always grew up toward the weld toe. However, in fatigue loading, cracks grew up and down simultaneously form both the weld toe and the top of lamellar tears because of stress concentration. In fatigue loading, delaminations and decohesion of inclusion/matrix interface generated in multipass welds provided crack propagation paths and enhanced crack propagation because the tips of delaminations and deconhesios acted as stress raisers.

  • Interfacial adhesive strength between the fully-crosslinked and partially-crosslinked rubber layers were Investigated at the temperature range of $30{\sim}120^{\circ}C$ for four different rubbers(NR, SBR, EPDM, BIMS). The surfaces of interfacial failure were also investigated using a scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The physical interlinking played a major role in the adhesive strength between the fully-crosslinked rubber layers. When a partially-crosslinked rubber layer was bonded to the fully-crosslinked one, the chemical as well as the physical interlinking affected the adhesive strength. NR showed a "interfacial knotty tearing" pattern, while EPDM showed a typical "cross-hatched" one when the adhesive strength approached to the cohesive tear strength of each material.

  • In order to study the failure mode and seismic behavior of the interior-joint in steel traditional-style buildings, a single beam-column joint and a double beam-column joint were produced according to the relevant building criterion of ancient architectural buildings and the engineering instances, and the dynamic horizontal loading test was conducted by controlling the displacement of the column top and the peak acceleration of the actuator. The failure process of the specimens was observed, the bearing capacity, ductility, energy dissipation capacity, strength and stiffness degradation of the specimens were analyzed by the load-displacement hysteresis curve and backbone curve. The results show that the beam end plastic hinge area deformed obviously during the loading process, and tearing fracture of the base metal at top and bottom flange of beam occurred. The hysteresis curves of the specimens are both spindle-shaped and plump. The ultimate loads of the single beam-column joint and double beam-column joint are 48.65 kN and 70.60 kN respectively, and the equivalent viscous damping coefficients are more than 0.2 when destroyed, which shows the two specimens have great energy dissipation capacity. In addition, the stiffness, bearing capacity and energy dissipation capacity of the double beam-column joint are significantly better than that of the single beam-column joint. The ductility coefficients of the single beam-column joint and double beam-column joint are 1.81 and 1.92, respectively. The cracks grow fast when subjected to dynamic loading, and the strength and stiffness degradation is also degenerated quickly.

  • This paper reports the results of a recent experimental study into the behavior of welded fin-plate connections to both hollow and concrete filled tubular (CFT) columns under shear. Experiments have been performed at both ambient and elevated temperatures with the aid of an electric kiln. The observed failure modes include fracture of the fin plate and tearing out of the tube around the welds. By considering the results of previously published research, the current design method for similar connections under purely tensile load, in CIDECT Guide 9, based on a deformation limit of 3% of the tube width is shown to be inadequate when evaluating the ultimate strength of such connections. By comparing the results from the current test program which failed in the fin-plate with Eurocode guidance for failure of a fin-plate alone under shear and bending load it is shown that the column face influences the overall connection strength regardless of failure mode. Concrete in-fill is observed to significantly increase the strength of connections over empty specimens, and circular column specimens were observed to exhibit greater strength than similarly proportioned square columns. A finite element (F.E.) model, developed using ABAQUS, is presented and validated against the experimental results in order that extensive parametric tests may be subsequently performed. When validating the model against elevated temperature tests it was found that using reduction factors suggested in published research for the specific steel grades improved results over applying the generic Eurocode elevated temperature steel strength reduction factors.

  • In recent years, Jumchi-Hanji made of mulberry paper is used as a material for fashion items. This study examined the effect of the type of Choji method (Oebal-teugi or Ssangbal-teugi), layer number (one or two layers) and Jumchichigi time (20, 40, or 60 minutes) on the tensile, wet tensile, tearing and bursting strengths of Jumchi-Hanji. Jumchi-Hanjis used as test samples in this study were made from mulbery paper which was manufactured with either bleached or unbleached paper mulberry from Thailand. The results showed that Jumchi-Hanji made with two layers of mulberry papers had higher strength properties than Jumchi-Hanji made with only one layer. The strength properties of Jumchi-Hanji also increased with longer Jumchichigi time. Furthermore, this study confirmed that the effects of Jumchichigi time on Jumchi-Hanji strengths differed based on the type of Choji method, the layer number of mulberry papers used, and the specific strength property measured. Therefore, to guarantee the strength properties required by the application of Jumchi-Hanji paper as a fashion material, it is necessary to carefully consider the adequate Choji method and layer number to apply in the manufacture of Thai mulberry paper and the adequate duration time needed to perform Jumchichigi to Thai mulbery paper.

  • Corrugated steel plate structure, which is built by assembling corrugated steel plate segments with bolts on site and filling the surroundings with quality soil, is widely used for buried structures as a eco-corridors, small bridges, and closed conduits. This experimental study is dealt with the static and fatigue performance of bolt connected corrugated steel plates under flexural loading. The experimental variables to verify the fatigue performance are bolt diameters and detailing of connection such as washer and the corrugation dimension of specimens has a $400{\times}150$ mm. The experimental ultimate strength of specimens under static loading was higher than the theoretical strength and all specimen failed by a bearing and tearing failure of bolt hole of upper plate. Therefore, a fatigue tests of specimens had 6.0mm and 7.0mm thickness was conducted in which the load range was up to 209kN and 516kN, respectively. From the fatigue test, failure patterns are changed from plate bearing and tearing which is a typical failure pattern of static failure to a bearing failure of plate and shear failure of bolt, and experimental fatigue limit at $2{\times}10^6$cycles is about 85MPa.

  • A new composition of paper coating adhesives was prepared by using a nano-filler of an organically-modified montmorillonite (O-MMT). The new O-MMT coating adhesives were applied to the paper, and the properties of coated papers including surface morphology, optical and physical properties, and printing properties were investigated. The use of O-MMT improved the mechanical properties, such as folding endurance, tearing strength, and tensile strength, while the surface smoothness decreased. It decreased especially when the dosage was high enough, approximately above 6 parts. The printing properties such as wet- and dry-pick were enhanced with addition of O-MMT.

  • In this paper, the effect of cellulase treatment was evaluated by means of phenol-sulphuric acid method. This method was performed by determining sugar liberation in the treatment bath with the amount expressed in glucose equivalent. As compared with conventional method, the measurement of amount of sugar liberated gave a more reliable and accurate result than the weight loss method. It was found that although the weight loss of cellulose became negligible when the treatment was done under agitation-free condition, the amount of sugar liberated was still readily measurable.

  • This paper examines the De-inking characteristics of mechanical methods using the newly developed De-inking machine along with experiments to enhance the manufacture of recycled kraft pulp with the addition of newspaper. This study concluded that : First, the De-Inking ratio was affected by shear stress and friction resistance operating In the stainless steel net. Second, the brightness improvement ratio was raised by 6.2% under the following conditions : 120rpm rotor speed, 2.18% concentration, using two treatment cycles. Third, it was shown that the tearing strength was improved by about 10 to 20% , and the tensile strength remained the same when recycled kraft pulp was added with 20% wasted paper. In sum, by these experiments we have proven that the performance of the newly developed De-inking machine can be improved.
