  • $NH_3$-SCR has high NOx removal efficiency approximately 80~90%. Recently, the copper or iron ion-exchanged zeolite catalysts are widely used as automobile SCR catalysts. In this paper, the effect of the space velocity, temperature of reaction and $NO_2$ addition on the $NH_3$-SCR reaction were studied using various zeolite SCR catalysts. The test was conducted with small sized fresh catalysts in a laboratory fixed-bed flow reactor system using simulated gases. It is found that the activity of the BEA is better than MFI. It seems that three-dimensional framework and a wide pore entrance of BEA enhances the SCR activity. It is also found that low temperature activity of Cu-zeolites was better than Fe-zeolites. Once $NO_2$ was added, the NOx conversion activity of the Cu-zeolite was slightly enhanced, whereas remarkable improvement was achieved by Fe-zeolite.

  • Extract of Japanese red pine needles has been used in Asia pacific regions since long periods believing its valuable properties as tonic and ability of curing diseases of unidentified symptoms. Some selective compounds present in the extract and their effects were analyzed. Carbohydrates and vitamin c were identified using HPLC; terpenoid compounds by GC-MS; anti-bacterial analysis by paper discs, plates count and gastrointestinal motility by whole cell patch clamp. The extract is a mixture of compounds therefore its diverse effect was expected. Self-fermentation in extract proceeds after spontaneous appearance of yeast strains without inoculation. Effects and composition of the extract vary with varying period of self-fermentation. Extract inhibits the growth of bacteria dose dependently exhibiting its antibacterial properties however effectiveness increases with increase in fermentation period. The extract also can modulate gastrointestinal motility in murine small intestine by modulating pace maker currents in ICC mediated through ATP sensitive potassium channel.

  • This study presents a teaching model to increase the participation and interest, and to improve their understanding of physical concepts of first-year engineering students taking physics(2) course at a three-year college. In the class, a team task solution based on teamwork and a peer learning method through questions and answers between participants in each team were applied so that learners could actively participate in the class to discuss and present. We examined how the activities of each team affected students' interest in subjects, motivation to learn, and the degree of understanding of physical concepts. In the team activity, students were able to actively participate through emotional sharing between learners and free questions and explanations, and it was confirmed that academic achievement was improved by comparing the final exam evaluation results with the evaluation results of the previous three years.

  • Large areas must be rapidly screened to monitor radiation in marine environments. For this purpose, this study developed a mobile real-time gamma-ray measurement system for shipboard use and evaluated its performance. The system was developed to measure engine or generator cooling water by installing a canister inside the ship. The minimum detectable activity of the system is about 0.8 Bq/L for a 60 s measurement period, and real-time data transmission and remote control are possible. The system was tested in the field and is currently being installed and operated on ships in service. Such a ship-based real-time gamma-radiation measurement system is suitable for a wide range of marine radiation surveillance applications and is expected to be rapidly deployed.

  • In a search for plant extracts with potent in vivo antifungal activity against various plant pathogenic fungi, the methanol extract of the Curcuma longa rhizomes effectively controlled the development of rice blast catised by Magnaporthe grisea and tomato late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans. Three curcuminoids such as curcumin, demethoxycurcumin, and bisdemethoxycurcumin were purified from the methanol extract of C. longa rhizomes as antifungal principles. Among the three curcuminoids, demethoxycurcumin was the most active to both rice blast and tomato late blight, followed in order by curcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin. However, they all exhibited no or little in vivo antifungal activity against other fungal pathogens causing rice sheath blight (Corticium sasaki), tomato gray mold (Botrytis cinerea), wheat leaf rust (Puccinia recondita), or barley powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordel).

  • Abstract Griseofulvin has been used as an antifungal antibiotic for the treatment of mycotic diseases of humans and veterinary animals. The purpose of this work was to identify a griseofulvin-producing endophytic fungus from Abies holophylla and evaluate its in vivo antifungal activity against plant pathogenic fungi. Based on nuclear ribosomal ITS1-5.8SITS2 sequence analysis, the fungus was identified and labeled as Xylaria sp. F0010. Two antifungal substances were purified from liquid cultures of Xylaria sp. F0010, and their chemical identities were determined to be griseofulvin and dechlorogriseofulvin through mass and NMR spectral analyses. Compared to dechlorogriseofulvin, griseofulvin showed high in vivo and in vitro antifungal activity, and effectively controlled the development of rice blast (Magnaporthe grisea), rice sheath blight (Corticium sasaki), wheat leaf rust (Puccinia recondita), and barley powdery mildew (Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei), at doses of 50 to 150 ${\mu}$g/ml, depending on the disease. This is the first report on the production of griseofulvin and dechlorogriseofulvin by Xylaria species.

  • To develop a natural fungicide against Botrytis cinerea and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, a total of 25 essential oils were tested for their fumigant activity against post-harvest pathogens. The vaporous phases of oils were treated to each fungus on potato dextrose agar medium in half-plate separated Petri plates at $10\;{\mu}g$ per plate. The essential oil of Illicium verum strongly inhibited the mycelial growth of both B. cinerea and C. gloeosporioides by over 90%. On the other hand, the essential oil of Schizonepeta tenuifolia showed inhibitory activity against mycelial growth of only B. cinerea by over 90%. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and bioassay indicated trans-anethole in I. verum and menthone in S. tenuifolia as a major antifungal constituent. The essential oils of I. verum and S. tenuifolia and their major constituents could be used to manage post-harvest diseases caused by B. cinerea and C. gloeosporioides.

  • The aims of this study were to examine the efficacy of phytochemicals of Rumex crispus as anti-oxidant and anti-browning agent. The bioactive properties of Rumex crispus as natural colorants were studied by total phenolic contents, DPPH radical scavenging, ABTS radical scavenging, lipid peroxidation, cell viability, singlet oxygen quenching and photoprotection effect. Among all of the results ($IC_{50}$: the concentration of various extracts required to exert 50% reducing effect), the higher activity of the extract was found in the ethyl acetate and butanol extracts. Anti-browning activity was evaluated by monitoring the change $L^*$, $a^*$, $b^*$ values and total color differences(${\Delta}E$). It was found that ethyl acetate and butanol extracts effectively inhibited browning in apple juice at a concentration below 0.3 mg/ml. Rumex crispus extracts used natural colorants could be of good resources as anti-oxidant and anti-browning agents. The results suggest that our study may contribute to the development of natural and functional materials with potential application to reduce oxidative damage.
