  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop predictive models for pressure ulcer incidence using electronic health record (EHR) data and to compare their predictive validity performance indicators with that of the Braden Scale used in the study hospital. Methods: A retrospective case-control study was conducted in a tertiary teaching hospital in Korea. Data of 202 pressure ulcer patients and 14,705 non-pressure ulcer patients admitted between January 2015 and May 2016 were extracted from the EHRs. Three predictive models for pressure ulcer incidence were developed using logistic regression, Cox proportional hazards regression, and decision tree modeling. The predictive validity performance indicators of the three models were compared with those of the Braden Scale. Results: The logistic regression model was most efficient with a high area under the receiver operating characteristics curve (AUC) estimate of 0.97, followed by the decision tree model (AUC 0.95), Cox proportional hazards regression model (AUC 0.95), and the Braden Scale (AUC 0.82). Decreased mobility was the most significant factor in the logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models, and the endotracheal tube was the most important factor in the decision tree model. Conclusion: Predictive validity performance indicators of the Braden Scale were lower than those of the logistic regression, Cox proportional hazards regression, and decision tree models. The models developed in this study can be used to develop a clinical decision support system that automatically assesses risk for pressure ulcers to aid nurses.

  • This study started with the idea that it is necessary to focus on common concepts and ideas among the subjects when conducting integrated education in high school. This is a preliminary study for developing materials that can be taught in mathematics in the context of already learning scientific concepts in high school. For this purpose, Mendel 's law of genetics was studied among the contents of biological subjects which are known to have relatively little connection with mathematics. The more common links between the two subjects are, the better, in order to integrate math and other subjects and develop materials for teaching. Therefore, in this study, we investigated not only the probability domain but also the concept of statistical domain. We have been wondering if there is a more abundant idea to connect between 'Mendel's law' and 'probability and statistics'. Through these anxieties, we could find that concepts such as 'likely equality' and 'permutation and combination' including 'a large number of laws' can be a link between two subjects. Based on this, we were able to develop class materials that correspond to classes. This study is expected to help with research related to development of integrated education support materials, focusing on mathematics.

  • Background: This study aimed to investigate the effects of department satisfaction and career maturity on the perceived health status, relationship, and self-efficacy of dental hygiene college students based on Alderfer's existence-relationship-growth theory. Methods: We obtained convenience samples of dental hygiene students in Daejeon and Chungnam areas; 241 questionnaires were collected from 250 persons considering the dropout rate and used for the final analysis except for 9 careless responses. The differences in perceived health status, relationship, self-efficacy, department satisfaction, and career maturity according to general characteristics were analyzed using a t-test, one-way analysis of variance and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Moreover, structural equation modeling was performed to confirm the variables. GFI, AGFI,CFI, RMR, RMSEA, TLI, and NFI indices were calculated to verify the fitness of the path model. Results: There were significant differences in self-efficacy, department satisfaction, career maturity according to grade, and significant differences in academic performance for all variables except relationship. The school system also had a significant effect on department satisfaction. Perceived health status, relationship, self-efficacy, department satisfaction, and career maturity demonstrated statistically significant positive correlations (p<0.05). The factors affecting department satisfaction were relationship and self-efficacy. The indirect and total effects of perceived health status and relationship on career maturity were not statistically significant; however, the indirect and total effects of self-efficacy on career maturity were statistically significant. Conclusion: It is necessary to develop teaching methods according to student management plans for dental hygiene by comprehensively perceived health status, relationship, and self-efficacy affecting department satisfaction and career maturity.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the trends and core keywords of the secondary school home economics teacher selection test using content analysis and text network analysis. The sample comprised texts of the secondary school home economics teacher 1st selection test for the 2017-2022 school years. Determination of frequency of occurrence, generation of word clouds, centrality analysis, and topic modeling were performed using NetMiner 4.4. The key results were as follows. First, content analysis revealed that the number of questions and scores for each subject (field) has remained constant since 2020, unlike before 2020. In terms of subjects, most questions focused on 'theory of home economics education', and among the evaluation content elements, the highest percentage of questions asked was for 'home economics teaching·learning methods and practice'. Second, the network of the secondary school home economics teacher selection test covering the 2017-2022 school years has an extremely weak density. For the 2017-2019 school years, 'learning', 'evaluation', 'instruction', and 'method' appeared as important keywords, and 7 topics were extracted. For the 2020-2022 school years, 'evaluation', 'class', 'learning', 'cycle', and 'model' were influential keywords, and five topics were extracted. This study is meaningful in that it attempted a new research method combining content analysis and text network analysis and prepared basic data for the revision of the evaluation area and evaluation content elements of the secondary school home economics teacher selection test.

  • Electronic educational environments in the conditions of quarantine restrictions of COVID-19 have become a common phenomenon for the organization of distance educational activities. Under the conditions of Russian aggression, Ukrainian proof of their use is unique. The purpose of the article is to analyze the role of electronic educational environments in the process of training applicants for higher education in Ukraine in the realities of a large-scale war. General scientific methods (analysis, synthesis, deduction, and induction) and special pedagogical prognostic methods, modeling, and SWOT analysis methods were used. In the results, the general properties of the Internet educational platforms common in Ukraine, the peculiarities of using the Moodle and Prometheus platforms, and an approximate model of the electronic learning environment were discussed. The reasons for the popularity of Moodle among Ukrainian universities are analyzed, but vulnerable elements related to security are emphasized. It was also determined that the high cost of Prometheus software and less functionality made this learning environment less relevant. The conclusions state that the military actions drew the attention of universities in Ukraine to the formation of their own educational platforms. This is especially relevant for technical and military institutions of higher education.

  • In this study, we explored the philosophical perspective of Ian Hacking on experimentation and discussed its potential impact on science education in schools. Traditionally, many philosophers have advocated a theory-driven view of experimentation, emphasizing its importance primarily in validating theories. Similarly, in the context of education, the prevailing perspective has been to focus on experimentation primarily as a means of confirming and proving theories. However, in contrast to this theory-driven perspective, philosophers like Hacking have proposed that experimentation itself possesses autonomy and vitality. Through their discussions, they have brought to light the significance of previously overlooked elements in experiments, such as tool usage, materials, and the involvement of scientists. They have prompted a reevaluation of the role and importance of experiments in scientific activities. Therefore, in this study, we consider the application of this philosophical standpoint to school experimental education. We anticipate that the phenomenon-centered perspective we propose in this research will be beneficial for teaching scientific practices, including tool usage, the involvement of experimenters, and modeling activities.

  • A scientific model refers to a conceptual system that can describe, explain, and predict a particular physical phenomenon. The co-construction of the scientific model is attracting attention as a new teaching and learning strategy in the field of science education and various studies. The evaluation and modification of models compared with the predicted models of data from the real world is the core of modeling strategy. However, there were only a limited data provided by the teacher in many studies of modeling comparing the students' predictions of their own models. Most of the students were not given the opportunity to evaluate the suitability of the model with the data in the real world. The purpose of this study was to develop a scientific model co-construction program that can evaluate the model by directly comparing the predicted models with the observed data from the real world. Through a collaborative discussion between teachers and researchers for 6 months, a 5-session scientific model co-construction program on the subject 'image formation by convex lenses' for second grade middle school students was developed. Eighty (80) students in 3 classes and a science teacher with 20 years of service from general public co-educational middle school in Gyeonggi-do participated in this 2-week program. After the class, students were asked about the helpfulness and difficulty of the class, and whether they would like to recommend this class to a friend. After the class, 95.8% of the students constructed the scientific model more than the model using the construction rule. Students had difficulties to identify principles or understand their friends, but the result showed that they could understand through model evaluation experiment. 92.5% of the students said that they would be more than willing to recommend this program to their friends. It is expected that the developed program will be applied to the school and contribute to the improvement of students' modeling ability and co-construction ability.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between contingencies of self-worth(superiority and others' approval), college adjustment and expectancy for future success and the mediating role of cognitive flexibility in these relationships. For this study, data from 460 college students were analyzed. The results were as follows. Contingencies of self-worth(superiority) were positively associated with college adjustment and expectancy for future success, while contingencies of self-worth(others' approval) were negatively associated with college adjustment and expectancy for future success. Second, the results of structural equation modeling indicated that cognitive flexibility fully mediated the relationship of contingencies of self-worth (superiority and others' approval) with college adjustment and expectancy for future success. Third, even the contingencies of self-worth(other's approval) were negatively associated with cognitive flexibility, and if the latter was high, it influenced college adjustment and expectancy for future success. Finally, the meanings and limitations of this research and implicationsfor counseling strategies and interventions were discussed in detail.
