  • The purpose of this study is to analyze some Korean elementary pre-service teachers' Mathematical Knowledge for Teaching(MKT) and compare the results with those obtained by Kwon, Nam, & Kim(2009), so that we can provide some suggestions to improve education of elementary mathematics subject at Korean teachers colleges. For this purpose, we selected the MKT items on number and operations which were adapted for Korean in-service teachers by Kwon et al. The survey consisting of those items was administered to 88 Korean elementary pre-service teachers at teachers college, J University. The results are the following: First, the respondents, elementary pre-service teachers, showed that they already had a sufficient amount of Content Knowledge(CK) on number and operations, but that their level of Knowledge of Content and Students(KCS) was insufficient. This means we need to strengthen our students' KCS in education of elementary mathematics subject at our teachers colleges. Second, there was a strong correlation, in both CK and KCS, of item difficulty felt by the respondents with that by the Kwon et al's in-service teachers. Third, although the respondents valued the MKT items more than the above-mentioned elementary in-service teachers, about 70% of them said the items were never learned at their college. Furthermore, they had different opinions on some of the items from their counterparts'. The suggestions we get here are we need to first consider the results in improving education of elementary mathematics subject at our teachers colleges and second develop MKT items suitable for the situation of Korean schools and curriculums in order to obtain exact estimations of Korean elementary pre-service teachers' MKT.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine high school students' perception of male home economics teachers and identify diverse viewpoints. To this end, the Q method was used, which is useful for operant subjectivity studies in which research participants create their own opinions and viewpoints. Based on the general procedures of the Q method, this study finalized 40 statements comprised of the representational system of high school students on male home economics teachers, which are Q samples, from the Q population. The statements were Q-sorted by P samples comprised of 31 high school seniors and analyzed using the QUANL program. The results showed that there were 4 different viewpoints of high school students on male home economics teachers. The type 1 focused on individual traits, claiming that the 'male' gender of home economics teachers and the 'home economics' subject are merely individual traits of the teachers. The type 2 focused on the subject, perceiving male home economics teachers with focus on the subject of home economics. The type 3 focused on competencies, thinking that male home economics teachers have sufficient skills and competencies to teach home economics. Finally, the type 4 focused on character, valuing the character of the teachers and thinking that male home economics teachers are great teachers who took up the challenge of teaching home economics. This study has significance as it provides the basic data for in-depth understanding of students' perception of male home economics teachers in individual context.

  • The aim of this study was to assess adolescents' sexuality and to gather student opinions on current school-based sex education in South Korea. A self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted in Seoul, Incheon, and Kyunggi Province to assess the status and needs of high school sexuality education. Survey data was obtained from 1,130 senior high school students. The rates of sexual intercourse for boys and girls were 33.1% and 13.2% respectively. Boys were more likely to be sexually involved (p = .000) and experienced earlier at first sexual intercourse than girls (p = .006). Among students who had sexual intercourse, only 20.3% (21.1% of boys and 19.1% of girls) used contraceptives at first sexual intercourse. The proportion of respondents who had had sexual intercourse was higher among those with poor self-perceived academic performance (p = .000). The proportion was also higher among those with a boy or girl friend (p = .000). Other risk-taking behaviors such as smoking and drinking were associated with sexual activity (p = .000). This study found that most students were not satisfied with sex education because of teachers' lack of information and skills in delivering it. Most teachers providing sex education were not qualified and/or trained. They should receive adequate training and guidelines for the training. Training should also give teachers time to practice and become comfortable in delivering it.

Of the problems in gifted science education, teachers regarded the reduction in the financial support as the biggest problem and the vocation and professionalism of teachers were referred as a very important factor. With constraints of time and space, there were plenty of opinions that can't ignore the influence of educational environment associated with the university entrance examination. There were many opinions that there is excessive expansion of the agencies and the target for gifted students, no standardized measurement tools and programs and the lack of the system for the coherent observation as a teacher. Also, the unified curriculum of gifted science education institutions were pointed out as the problem and the individualized programs which were already under way have a lot of weakness and being offered marginally. Thus, from now on, to apply for individualized education of gifted science, teachers demanded optimized education conditions and consistent policy support, and expressed the opinion that there needs of a possible continuous observation system. Besides, the curriculum and programs matched the needs of the students should be taken priority the most, and there were another answers that fellow learning within the cooperative learning can be an alternative of the individualized. • School forests, an important part of the urban forest, has diverse functions and plays an important role in artificial environment. It has three main functions: educational for children, ecological for nature, and cultural for residents. In spite of its diverse functions and roles, the actual conditions and achievements of school forests have not been correctly evaluated, resulting in institutional inertia. To improve these problems, this study was synthetically conducted by the post occupancy evaluation of users(residents, teachers and students) at school forests. This study can be summarized as follows: 1. The cognition and satisfaction level of school forests supported by private organizations was higher than those by local governments. Therefore, the establishment of a post management system of private organizations is more effective than the simple financial support of local governments. 2. The frequency of use of school forests by residents was higher than that of teachers. Their purposes were mainly to rest or walk However, teachers used school forests for nature observation and education. 3. In a survey of teachers about a reform measure and problems of school forests, the necessity of a post management system and financial security were significant requests. In addition, steady publicity and education, participant program, and incentives for teachers should be considered. This study is meaningful to systematically develop and activate the school forest movement. The integrated approach to the school forest movement reflects opinions of related users and is expected to become a useful foundation in studying about the improvement of city environments.

  • This study analyzed the perceptions of elementary and secondary school teachers regarding the importance of SW/AI education in fostering students' fundamental knowledge and the necessity of integrating SW/AI into education. A total of 830 elementary and secondary school teachers were selected as study subjects using the judgment sampling method. The analysis of survey data revealed that elementary and secondary teachers exhibited a strong awareness of the importance and necessity of SW/AI education, irrespective of school characteristics, region, educational experience, or prior involvement in SW and AI education. Nevertheless, the primary reasons for not implementing SW/AI education were identified as excessive workload and a lack of pedagogical expertise. An analysis of opinions on the essential conditions for implementing SW/AI education revealed that workload reduction, budget support, teacher training to enhance teacher competency, content distribution, expansion of subject-linked courses, and dedicated instructional time allocation were the major influencing factors. These findings indicate a significant demand for comprehensive instructional support and teacher capacity-building programs.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze leading teachers' opinions on key competencies and subject competencies presented in the 2015 revised national curriculum and to draw implications for competency-based curriculum development and implementation. The research findings show that leading teachers are generally positive about the introduction of key competencies, subject competencies setting and its feasibility and recognize that the key competencies are highly related to the subject competencies of each subject. However, it is judged that the key competencies and subject competencies are not embodied well in every aspect of the curriculum documents. They also recognize that in the practice of competency education, supporting the development of teachers' ability to conduct student-centered classes in a culture that enables voluntary research efforts of the teacher community can be the biggest issue rather than external support such as development of competency-centered textbooks or consulting and supervision. Finally, we propose the need for support and policy that enable voluntary efforts for interdisciplinary cooperation and strengthening teacher capacity rather than developing competency-centered textbooks; specification of competency education in educational content, pedagogical methods and assessment; reconsideration of subject competencies setting; maintaining the relationship between key competency and items that guide educational goals.
