  • The five species of family Bagridae in Korea were analyzed by numerical taxonomic method based on the twelve osteological characters of 110 cleared specimens. Family Bagridae of Korea was classified into genera Pseudobagrus and Leiocassis. Genus Pseudobagrus has P. fulvidraco, Pseudobagrus sp. and P. brevicorpus, and Leiocassis also has L nitidus and L ussuriensis. P. brevicorpus represented more closely relationships to P. fulvidraco rather than Pseudobagrus sp. in the morphological features of skeleton.

  • A review of taxonomic treatments of the amentiferous plant taxa reveals diverse classification. It appears to be necessary to investigate new characteristics and attempt to determine the significance of these characteristics in terms of amentiferous systematics. Serological techniques have been empolyed in a systematic investigation of selected taxa of the Amentiferae: Betulaceae, Fagaceae, Juglandaceae, Myricaceae, and Salicaceae. Data by qualitative analysis of pollen proteins, double immunodiffusion and conventional immunoelectrophoresis, have proved to be valuable in delimitation of taxa tested. When the antisera against Alnus hirsuta, Betula platyphylla var. japonica, Quercus aliena, Q. dentata, Q. glauca were tested; Alnus and Betula have the greatest protein similarity to one another; and next to the rest of betulaceous genera. Relatively strong protein similarity obtained with most representatives of Quercus and Fagus when reacted with antisera against Alnus and Betula is very much in contrast to the weak protein similarity obtained for the genera of Juglandaceae, Myricaceae, particularly of Salicaceae Tested with the same antisera. When Quercus antisera were used for various genera, the weakest protein similarity was obtained with Populus.

Varietal Classification on the Basis of Cluster Analysis in Burley Tobacco of N. tabacum L. (Cluster분석에 의한 버어리종 담배품종의 분류)

  • To obtain basic information on the breeding of burley tobacco, classification of 41 varieties was carried out by using the cluster analysis of correlation coefficients and taxonomic distance based on twenty-one agromonic characters. Eight characters, such as days to flowering, length of flower axis, internode length, leaf length, yield, leaf angle to stem, vein angle to midrib and plant height, were useful in monothetic classification. Forty-one varieties were classified into four groups (I, II, III and IV) with weighted variable group method (WVGM ) and weighted jai. group method(WPGM), whereas the results classification of 33 varieties among them by WVGM were coincident with the results by WPGM. As for the characteristics of each group, group I related to late maturity, tall height and high yield, group II related to intermediate maturity, tall height and low yield, group 19 related to early maturity, intermediate height and low yield, and group W related to early maturity, short height and intermediate yield.

Varietal Classification on the Basis of Cluster Analysis in Local Tobacco (Cluster분석에 의한 재래종 담배 품종의 분류에 관하여)

  • Korean local and introduced varieties were classified by the cluster analysis of correlation and taxonomic distance based on nineteen growth characters. 1. Thirty six varieties can be classified into three groups(I, II, III) by WVGM (weighted variable group method) 2. Major characters for classifying cultivars were days to flowering, number of leaves, leaf length, stem diameter and width of midrib: the five characters seemed to be useful in monothetic classification. 3. Korean varieties were similar to oriental, and japanese varieties to taiwan. 4. WVGM was more accurate and meaningful than classification by WPGM (weighted paired group method) and reticulate diagram of correlation. 5. Characteristics of each group: Group I closely related to many leaves, late of maturity and broad leaf type, Group II related to medium leaves, late of maturity and narrow leaf type, Croup 19 related to few leaves, early of maturity and medium leaf type respectively.

Analysis of Bacterial Community Structure in Bulk Soil, Rhizosphere Soil, and Root Samples of Hot Pepper Plants Using FAME and 16S rDNA Clone Libraries

  • A culture-independent and -dependent survey of the bacterial community structure in the rhizosphere and soil samples from hot pepper plants was conducted using 16S rDNA clone library and FAME analyses. Out of the 78 clones sequenced, 56% belonged to Proteobacteria, 4% to high G+C Gram- positive group, 3% to Cytophyga-Flexibacter-Bacreroides, and 32% could not be grouped with any known taxonomic division. Among the 127 FAME isolates identified, 66% belonged to low G+C Gram-positive bacteria (Baciilus spp.) and 26% to high G+C Gram-positive bacteria. In a cluster analysis, the results for both methods were found to be strikingly dissimilar. The current study is the first comparative study of FAME and 165 rDNA clonal analyses performed on the same set of soil, rhizosphere soil, and root samples.

  • In this study, we used pyrosequencing method to analysis of soil fungal communities on the Ulleungdo and Dokdo islands. 768 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) were analyzed from the Ulleungdo sample and 640 OTUs and 382 OTUs were analyzed from the Dongdo and Seodo samples, respectively. Compared to the species richness of Ulleungdo and the Dokdo sample, the Ulleungdo sample was higher than in the Dongdo and Seodo samples. Species diversity was much the same. The phylum Basidiomycota was dominant in the Ulleungdo sample, while the phylum Ascomycota was dominant in the Dongdo sample.

Molecular Taxonomy of Ganoderma cupreum from Southern India Inferred from ITS rDNA Sequences Analysis

  • Ganoderma is a cosmopolitan wood-rot basidiomycete that has been extensively studied for its pathogencity and medicinal properties. Identification of Ganoderma based on macro-microscopic features led to large number of synonyms which resulted in 250 taxonomic names. A Ganoderma species collected from Courtallam, Tamil Nadu was identified as G. cupreum. Phylogenetic analysis inferred from internal transcribed spacer rDNA region resolved the Indian isolate MYC1 as Ganoderma cupreum which clustered with Australian and Asian "cupreum" clade with 85% bootstrap support BS and shared 99% and 98% nucleotide similarity with Malaysian and Australian 'cupreum' respectively. This study represents the first molecular evidence of G. cupreum from Asian origin.

  • DNA fragments homologous to chitin synthase gene were amplified from the genomic DNA of Beauveria brongniartii by PCR using degenerate primers. Cloning and sequencing of the PCR-amplified fragments led to the identification of a gene, designated BbCHSl. Comparison of the deduced amino acid sequence of BbCHSl with those of other Euascomycetes revealed that BbCHSl is a gene for class II chitin synthase. The Blastp search of the deduced amino acid sequence of BbCHSl displayed the highest rate of similarity, 95.8%, with CHS2 of Metarhizium unisopliae. Phylogenetic analysis of the amino acid sequences confirmed the taxonomic and evolutionary position of B. brongniartii, which was previously derived by traditional fungal classification based on morphological features.

  • Several species of Gyromitra are highly poisonous when consumed raw the presence of gyromitrin. In this study, Gyromitra specimens deposited in the Korea National Arboretum were re-examined and subjected to molecular sequence analysis. G. gigas, G. aff. perlata, and G. tianshanensis were identified based on their morphological features and molecular phylogenetic analysis for the first time in Korea. Furthermore, internal transcribed spacer and 28S rRNA sequences of G. esculenta and G. infula were analyzed to confirm their phylogeny.

Admirandus multicavus Belogurov and Belogurova, 1979 (Nematoda, Enoplida, Oncholaimidae), a new record of free-living marine nematode discovered from the intertidal zone of Korea

  • Admirandus multicavus Belogurov and Belogurova, 1979, a new record of free-living marine nematode species belonging to family Oncholaimidae is reported based on the specimens collected from the intertidal sediments of Korea. Admirandus multicavus is characterized by the following unique characteristics: cephalic setae (1-2 ㎛ long), spicules (71-126 ㎛ long) and gubernaculum (15-31 ㎛ long), midventral preanal supplementary organ, three glandular duct openings of the Demanian system, and stoma length measuring twice the width. A comparative analysis of the biogeographical and ecological characteristics of Admirandus species is presented. DIC (Differential interference contrast) photomicrographs of the species are also provided herein. This report represents the first taxonomic analysis of the genus Admirandus Belogurov and Belogurova, 1979 discovered from the Korean seawaters.
