Sustainable concrete mix design for a target strength and service life

  • Considering the well known environmental issues of cement manufacturing (direct and indirect levels of $CO_2$ emissions), clinker replacement by supplementary cementing materials (SCM) can be a very promising first step in reducing considerably the associated emissions. However, such a reduction is possible up to a particular level of SCM utilization, influenced by the rate of its pozzolanic reaction. In this study a (4-step) structured methodology is proposed in order to be able to further adjust the concrete mix design of a particular SCM, in achieving additional reduction of the associated levels of $CO_2$ emissions and being at the same time accepted from a derived concrete strength and service life point of view. On this note, the aim of this study is twofold. To evaluate the environmental contribution of each concrete component and to provide the best possible mix design configuration, balanced between the principles of sustainability (low environmental cost) and durability (accepted concrete strength and service life ). It is shown that such a balance can be achieved, by utilising SCM by-products in the concrete mix, reducing in this way the fixed environmental emissions without compromising the long-term safety and durability of the structure.

Medicinal plants traditionally used for the management of female reproductive health dysfunction in Tana River County, Kenya

  • Reproductive dysfunction is a major health concern amongst the inhabitants of Tana River County. An ethno botanical study was conducted in Garsen, Itsowe and Ngao sub divisions of Tana River County to document the utilization of medicinal plants for the management of female reproductive ailments. The target population was practicing herbalists from Pokomo, Ormo and Giryama communities in the study area. Structured questionnaires and focussed group discussions were used to collect data. Forty eight plant species distributed in 40 genera and 29 families were documented as being important for the management of pregnancy related complications, menstrual disorders, infertility, fibroids and as contraceptives. The species most frequently cited by the herbalists were fourteen. Fifty two percent of the plant species were probably being mentioned for the first time as being useful in reproductive health management. In conclusion, Tana River has a pool of TMPs with a wealth of indigenous knowledge that needs to be exploited. The plants used to treat dysmenorrhea for example may be important analgesic agents that need further investigation while those with anti-fertility properties may contain steroidal phyto chemical compounds. Such species therefore need further investigation to establish their efficacy and mechanism of action.

Value of a statistical life estimation of carcinogenic chemicals for socioeconomic analysis in Korea

  • Objectives To protect public health from risk, the Minister of Environment in Korea legislated an act concerning the registration and evaluation of chemical substances. In this study, we estimated the value of a statistical life (VSL) of carcinogenic chemicals to evaluate the socioeconomic analysis in Korea. Methods The estimation of the health benefit can be calculated through an individual's VSL and willingness to pay (WTP). To estimate the VSL and WTP, we used a contingent valuation method through a web-based survey. Results The survey is conducted with 1434 people living in Seoul and six large cities. An analysis of the survey is essential to review the distribution of the characteristics of the target population. The statistically significant variables affecting the WTP are location, age, household income, quality of life. Through the review of data, we secured statistical validity. The WTP was estimated as 41205 Korean won (KRW)/person, and the estimated VSL appeared as 796 million KRW/person. Conclusions There is a case in which the amount of statistical life value is estimated in connection with domestic environmental policy, fine dust, etc. However, there are no cases of evaluation for chemical. The utilization of this result is possible for conducting other study with chemicals.

Prospects and Challenges of Social Media Marketing: Study of Indian Management Institutes

  • Purpose - The research aimed to reveal real decisional behavioral of management institutes in India for social media marketing usage, and analyses of empirical elements of social media consumption pattern. Research design, data, and methodology - The investigation was based around a research methodology using quantitative analysis with appropriate statistical techniques on random surveys of consumers, detailed exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses are applied to assess the empirical validity of the model and multiple regression employed using R studio edition to validate the reliability of the developed models. Results - A new conceptual framework is proposed - the management institutions decision model, providing a tool for effective and more focused decision-making strategies for developing better utilization techniques for social media. Management institutions have different requirements based upon objectives and resources available. The evidence suggests that the administrators need to be more aware of consumer indicators when targeting and designing social media marketing strategy. Conclusions - The research was based on samples and not the entire population of target consumers, providing limitations. As an inferential statistical method was chosen, the results might be susceptible to inaccuracy. The model developed from different age users, thereby providing rich perspectives into social media usage pattern.

세포내 소수성 물질 이동에서 막과 세포내 결합단백질의 역살 : 지방산 결합 단밸직과 장쇄 지방산 (The Role of Membranes and Intracellular Binding Proteins in Cytoplasmic Transport of Hydrophobic Molecules : Fatty Acid Binding Proteins and Long Chain Fatty Acids)

  • Path of a small hydrophobic molecule through the aqueous cytoplasma is not linear. Partition may favor membrane binding by several orders of magnitude : thus significant membrane association will markedly decrease the cytosolic transport rate. The presence of high concentration of soluble binding proteins for these hydrophobic molecules would compete with membrane association and thereby increase transport rate. For long chain fatty acid molecules, a family of cytosolic binding proteins collectively known as the fatty acid binding proteins(FABP), are thought to act as intracellular transport proteins. This paper examines the mechanism of transfer of fluorescent antyroyloxy-labeled fatty acids(AOFA) from purified FABPs to phosholipid membranes. With the exception of the liver FABP, AOFA is transferred from FABP by collisional interaction of the protein with a acceptor membrane. The rate of transfer increased markedly when membranes contain anionic phospholipids. This suggests that positively charged residues on the surface of the FABP may interact with the membranes. Neutralization of the surface lysine residues of adipocyte FABP decreased fatty acid transfer rate, and transfer was found to proceed via aqueous diffusion rather than collisional interaction. Site specific mutagenesis has further shown that the helix-turn-helix domain of the FABP is critical for interaction with anionic acceptor membranes. Thus cytosolic FABP may function in intracellular transport of fatty acid to decrease their membranes association as well as to target fatty acid to specific subcellular sites of utilization.

포괄수가제 당연적용 후 의약품 사용현황 분석 (Analysis of Drug Utilization after the Mandatory Application of the DRG Payment System in Korea)

  • Purposes: This study aims to investigate the policy effect of mandatory application of DRG for 7 disease groups in general and tertiary hospitals. Methodology: As DRG was fully implemented in July 2013, this study compares two periods before and after the change(from July 2012 to June 2013, and from July 2013 to June 2014). The benefit claim data of the National Health Insurance Service was used for the comparison. Target patients were those who visited general or tertiary hospitals between July 2012 to June 2014. For pharmaceutical consumption, Interrupted Time Series (ITS) analysis was used to see the effect of DRG mandatory application. Findings: The number of drugs prescribed per patient and pharmaceutical expenditure both showed significant reduction compared to before the DRG implementation. Practical Implications: This study used 2 sets of 1 year period data from before and after the full implementation of DRG to analyze pharmaceutical consumption. When the comparison data accumulates further, it would be possible to conduct more diverse analysis to assess policy effect and to provide way forward for the future.

제주 갈옷 상품의 현황 및 실태조사 연구 (Research and Survey Gal-ot Product in Jeju)

  • Jeju, the biggest island in Korea, was registered as a World Natural Heritage in 2007. Recently, it was also voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. The need for academic awareness and tourist values on Jeju Island are understood. Gal-ot, one of the ten symbols for Jeju, is known for working clothes in general, despite its potential for cultural products because of its regional uniqueness and useful functional advantages. The authors conducted a comprehensive literature review and researched market trends of Gal-ot stores in Jeju to present development directions for cultural goods and to contribute to local economic improvement. Most stores were located in a semi-residential area and Jeju-si in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. Most products were not available for sale due to difficulties in the production process and online utilization. High prices and similar color, fabric and style hurt competitiveness. Various experiencing programs of Gal-ot and persimmon dyeing were necessary to expand the main target from residents to tourists. Also, marketing strategies using the internet and design plans reflecting current trends were needed. This study would contribute to prepare developmental projects of cultural product and result in economical advantages on Jeju Island.

  • 소프트웨어 배포 문제는 프로젝트관리에 매우 중요하다. 왜냐하면 다양한 운용 환경 하에서 개발비용 및 에러의 발견, 수정 등에 밀접한 관계에 있기 때문이다. 본 논문은 대형 교환시스템 소프트웨어의 Release 시점을 예측할 수 있는 최적배포 문제로서 시스템의 안정도를 평가해 볼 수 있는 측면에서 소프트웨어 최적 배포 문제를 다루었다. 또, 신뢰도 평가 기준을 제시하여 제품의 적기 공급 및 개발자원의 효율적 이용 측면을 분석하고 신뢰성 평가 척도와 개발비용 고려한 최적 배포 문제를 기술하였다. 그밖에 소프트웨어 신뢰도 성장 모델 중 지수형 모델을 근거로 한 초기 고장데이터를 활용하여 교환시스템의 소프트웨어 개발비용과 신뢰성 평가기준을 고려한 최적 배포시기를 결정하고 시험시 발생된 고장데이터에 대한 분석 및 관리기법 등을 소개한다.

  • Propellant consumption control for space launch vehicle can be achieved by propellant utilization system (PUS) and tank depletion system (TDS). In the course of developing new space launch vehicles, the main target of design is on reducing of space launch vehicle weight, which results in increasing both specific impulse and payload weight. The weights of space launch vehicles are generally allocated to structure, propulsion system, and propellants loaded. The quantity of propellants filled in propellant tanks may be estimated with the propellants actually consumed by propulsion system to complete its mission and the propellants left on-board at the time of engine shut-off. To minimize the remaining quantity of propellants on-board the supplying propellants' O/F ratio should be controlled from the certain time before engine shutdown. To control an O/F ratio, a control system, which accurately measures and compares the remainder of propellants in tanks and pipes, should be needed. This paper solely dedicates its contents to explore the merits and demerits of various level sensor, which is one of the important elements for PUS and TDS, and the transmission and control of signals within space launch vehicle.

동체의 순간 위치결정을 위한 수치영상 획득기법 개발 (Development of Digital Image Acquisition Technique for Momentary Positioning of Dynamic Object)

  • 동체의 3차원 순간위치결정을 위해서는 동일시간에 획득한 2개 이상의 영상이 필요하다. 최근 대중화되고 있는 디지털 카메라를 이용할 수도 있겠으나 연속영상은 얻을 수 없으므로 본 연구에서는 이를 위하여 비디오카메라를 이용한 저가의 순간영상획득시스템을 구축하였다. 또한 동일한 시간대의 입체영상을 얻기 위하여 LCD타이머를 동체와 함께 촬영하고 얻어진 연속영상으로부터 비디오 편집기를 이용하여 독립수치영상을 얻었다. 그 결과 동일시간의 수치영상을 $788{\times}550$픽셀의 해상도로 얻을 수 있었고 1/100sec의 시간정확도로 획득한 동체상의 타겟을 검사 한 결과 양호하였다. 추후 3차원 위치정확도를 비교하기 위해 일반 측정용사진기로 B-shutter를 이용하여 동체를 촬영, 양호한 음화를 획득할 수 있었다.
