Artificial Radical Generating and Scavenging Systems: Synthesis and Utilization of Photo-Fenton Regent in Biological Systems

  • A photo-labile compound which is bioinactive but, upon irradiation with light, yields bioactive species is called as "caged compound". Photolysis of caged compounds generating bioactive species, has become a general method to produce a desired amounts of bioactive species in the specific time interval at the desired place or area of the target biological systems. For this purpose, we designed and synthesized caged hydroxyl radical., "Photo-Fenton Reagent" NP-IIl. NP-IIl has a strong absorption maximum at 377 nm and yields hydroxyl radicals upon UV light irradiation. The antioxidant activity of the ${\alpha}$ -lipoic acid and other naturally occurring compounds has been examined by using NP-IIl as a molecular probe. For example, upon photoirradiation of NP-lII with BSA or apolipoprotein of human low density (LDL), the significant oxidative modifications were observed in both cases. The oxidation was completely suppressed in the presence of ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid, which clearly demonstrates the strong hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid.   • National Geotechnical Information Database Project based on GIS has begun as public works and continued until now, the whole of country has been target on since the 2003. Today, the 60,581 number of geotechnical data(counted by bering number) have been constructed as GIS-DB and they are being serviced at the National Geotechnical Information Integration Management System(NGIIMS)(http://www.geoinfo.or.kr). In this study, we considered operation status of NGIIMS, GIS-DB distribution of Geotechnical Information and utilization in order to investgate applicability of National Geotechnical Information Database. The results appeared that Geotechnical Information DB was along road-center, and in the case of complex, was only to some area. But after the 2007 when the law of computerization responsibility would be institutionalized, the more geotechnical data will be constructed and be able to use at a construction site.

  • Recently, by-products from concrete industry are generated in large quantities because of urban redevelopment. Accordingly, waste concrete powder(WCP) inevitably generated in the course of crushing, screening, and separating the waste concrete also show high emission and be increasing gradually, but which is mostly buried with waste concrete aggregate. This is a basic research to increase the value added utilization rate of WCP. We have examined strength characteristic of extruding panel with WCP, depending on the curing methods. The result of study shows similar strength to the base specimen in autoclave curing condition. And in autoclave curing condition, the specimen with WCP of 20% and 30% satisfy the target strength of 14MPa.

  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is diversely utilized in our lives such as daily hobbies, specialized video image taking and disaster prevention activities. New ways of UAV application have been explored recently such as UAV-based delivery. However, most UAV systems are being utilized in a passive form such as real-time video image monitoring, filmed image ground analysis and storage. For more proactive UAV utilization, there should be higher-performance UAV and large-capacity memory than those presently utilized. Against this backdrop, this study described the general matters on proactive software platform and high-performance UAV hardware for real-time target tracking; implemented research on its design and implementation, and described its implementation method. Moreover, in its established platform, this study measured and analyzed the core-specific CPU consumption.

Identification and Functional Characterization of a Cryptococcus neoformans UPC2 Homolog

  • Azoles are currently the most widely used class of antifungal drugs clinically, and are effective for treating fungal infections. Target site of azoles is ergosterol biosynthesis in fungal cell membrane, which is absent in the mammalian host. However, the development of resistance to azole treatments in the fungal pathogen has become a significant challenge. Here, we report the identification and functional characterization of a UPC2 homolog in the human pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans. UPC2 plays roles in ergosterol biosynthesis, which is also affected by the availability of iron in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans. C. neoformans mutants lacking UPC2 were constructed, and a number of phenotypic characteristics, including antifungal susceptibility and iron utilization, were analyzed. No differences were found between the mutant phenotypes and wild type, suggesting that the role of C. neoformans UPC2 homolog may be different from those in S. cerevisiae and C. albicans, and that the gene may have a yet unknown function.

  • 3D human body scan technique is known to be practically useful in industrial field as the technique becomes more precise and cheaper. Landmark extraction is essential for full utilization of the scan data. In this paper, we suggest an algorithm for automatic landmark extraction. For this purpose, we perform markerless matching to the target data using PCA analysis and quasi-Newton optimization. Landmarks are extracted from the topology of resulting body.

  • The major objective of this study is to evaluate the water balance of the Kumgang estuary barrage, one oof the regions with the most complex water utilization system. For the purpose of present study, two approaches are proposed which consider both the natural flow and low flow conditions, respectively. In order to make the evaluation of the low flow sequences, the flood frequency of the sequences was removed. According to the results, water deficiency is expected on the target year of 1996 in case of low inflow.

  • This paper suggests power optimization technique in multi-level SCPC system as a method for efficient utilization of limited satellite power. The power optimization is realized by optimal assignment of satellite input carrier powers considering interference and noise generated in up-link and down-link. The Fletcher-Powell algorithm searching minimum(or maximum) point using gradient information is used to detemine the optimal input carrier powers. To apply Flectcher-Powell algorithm mathematical descriptions and their partial derivatives to interference and nose are presented. Because a target, which should be optimized, is satellite input carrier power, amplitude of each carrier group will be assumed to be an independent variable. The performance criterion for optimal power assignmentis classified into 4 categories with respect to CNR of destination receiver earth station to meet the requirement for various satellite link environment. Simulation results for two-level, four-level and six-level SCPC system are presented.

Token with Timer Algorithm for Guaranteeing Periodic Communication Services in Timed Token Protocol Networks

  • Timed token protocols inadequately provide periodic communication service, although this is crucial for hard real time systems. We propose an approach to guaranteeing periodic communication service on a timed token protocol network. In this approach, we allocate bandwidth to each node so that the summation of bandwidth allocations is Target Token Rotation Time (TTRT). If a node cannot consume the allocated time, the residual time can be used by other nodes for non-periodic service using a timer which contains the unused time value and is appended to the token. This approach can always guarantee transmission of real-time messages before their deadlines when the network utilization is less than 50%.

  • This work is described as an fresh effort to study environmental sustainable management in organic products retailing markets. Sustainable management means creating value for business, nature and society. The main point of this thesis is about the concept, the content and the target of environmental sustainable management, and the technical method and basis to achieve it. Also this thesis shows the strategy of sustainable management as well as the realization of sustainable development by carrying out organic agricultural production. The main content of sustainable management is that: - Rationalize the utilization of resource and energy. - Maximize economic benefit. - Minimize harm to humans and the environment. Examines business strategies that have successfully targeted markets, such as advertising, labeling, gaining consumer trust, partnerships, and diversifying operations. These included management skills, and marketing organic and other sustainably grown products to determine strategies for developing new markets for these products. Suggests that consumers are becoming more aware of the importance of environmentally sound methods for growing food, the health benefits of wholesome food, and are willing to pay more for these products.
