While non-predefined object segmentation (NDOS) distinguishes an arbitrary self-assumed object from its background, predefined object segmentation (DOS) pre-specifies the target object. In this paper, a new and novel method to segment predefined objects is presented, by globally optimizing an orientation-based objective function that measures the fitness of the object boundary, in a discretized parameter space. A specific object is explicitly described by normalized discrete sets of boundary points and corresponding normal vectors with respect to its plane shape. The orientation factor provides robust distinctness for target objects. By considering the order of transformation elements, and their dependency on the derived over-segmentation outcome, the domain of translations and scales is efficiently discretized. A branch and bound algorithm is used to determine the transformation parameters of a shape model corresponding to a target object in an image. The results tested on the PASCAL dataset show a considerable achievement in solving complex backgrounds and unclear boundary images.

In this paper a three-phase secure compressive sensing (CS) and received signal strength (RSS) based target localization approach is proposed to mitigate the effect of malicious node attack. RSS measurements are first arranged into a group of subsets where the same measurement can be included in multiple subsets. Intermediate target position estimates are then produced using individual subsets of RSS measurements and the CS technique. From the intermediate position estimates, the residual error vector and residual error square vector are formed. The least median of residual error square is utilized to define a verifier parameter. The selected residual error vector is utilized along with a threshold to determine whether a node or measurement is under attack. The final target positions are estimated by using only the attack-free measurements and the CS technique. Further, theoretical analysis is performed for parameter selection and computational complexity evaluation. Extensive simulation studies are carried out to demonstrate the advantage of the proposed CS-based secure localization approach over the existing algorithms.
In ultrasonic medical imaging, spatial compounding of images is a technique where ultrasonic beam is steered to examine patient tissues in multiple angles. In the conventional ultrasonic diagnostic imaging, the steering of the ultrasonic beam is achieved electronically using the phased array transducer elements. In this paper, a spatial compounding approach is presented where the ultrasonic probe element is rotated mechanically and the beam steering is achieved mechanically. In the spatial compounding, target position is computed using the value of the rotation axis and the transducer array angular position. However, in the process of the rotation mechanism construction and the control system there arises the inevitable uncertainties in these values. These geometric parameter errors result in the target position error, and the consequence is a blurry compounded image. In order to reduce these target position errors, we present a spatial compounding scheme where error correcting transformation matrices are computed and applied to the raw images before spatial compounding to reduce the blurriness in the compounded image. The proposed scheme is illustrated using phantom and live scan images of human knee, and it is shown that the blurriness is effectively reduced.

Engaged in trawling in limited fishing grounds with a number of fish schools could cause collisions between fishing vessels. Therefore, providing accurate maneuver information according to the situation could be regarded as essential for improving seafarers safety and fishing efficiency as well as safety of navigation. It is difficult to obtain all maneuver information through sea trial tests only, so a method through empirical formula is necessary. Since most empirical formulas are developed for merchant ship types, especially the characteristics of hull shape parameter like CbB/L and dCb/B etc. are clearly different between fishing vessels and merchant ships, this could occur estimation errors. Therefore, in this study, the authors have selected target fishing vessels and merchant ships and analyzed the characteristics of hull shape parameter according to the ship types. Based on this analysis, the empirical formula developed for the merchant ship type has applied to the target fishing vessels; it has verified through the turning motion simulation that the estimation error could be generated. In conclusion, it is necessary to include the characteristics of the hull shape parameter of fishing vessels in the empirical formula in order to apply the empirical formula has developed for merchant ship types to fishing vessel types.

In this paper, we develop the reference and the matching priors for the reliability function of two-parameter exponential distribution. We derive the reference priors and the matching prior, and prove the propriety of joint posterior distribution under the general prior including the reference priors and the matching prior. Through the sim-ulation study, we show that the proposed reference priors match the target coverage probabilities in a frequentist sense.
This paper presents a method to estimate the parameter of permanent magnet synchronous motor using a least squares method. The approximate solution of the linear simultaneous equations is obtained by the pseudoinverse least squares method of the input current and output voltage data of the current controller. It is possible to obtain the current response of the same bandwidth to the general control target by using the Pole-zero Cancellation technique. This paper verifies the performance of the proposed method by comparing the results of estimation of parameters of different motors by simulation.

In this paper, we develop the noninformative priors for the common shape parameter of several inverse Gaussian distributions. Specially, we want to develop noninformative priors which satisfy certain objective criterion. The probability matching priors and reference priors of the common shape parameter will be developed. It turns out that the second order matching prior does not exist. The reference priors satisfy the first order matching criterion, but Jeffrey's prior is not the first order matching prior. We showed that the proposed reference prior matches the target coverage probabilities in a frequentist sense through simulation study, and an example based on real data is given.

A desirability function approach to a multiresponse problem is proposed considering process parameter fluctuation which may amplify the variance of response. It is called POE (propagation of error), which is defined as the standard deviation of the transmitted variability in the response as a function of process parameters. In order to obtain more robust process parameter setting, a new desirability function is proposed by considering POE as well as distance-to-target of response and response variance. The proposed method is illustrated using a rubber product case in Ribeiro et al. (2000).

This paper has the object of investigating natural frequencies of thick plates on inhomogeneous Pasternak foundation by means of finite element method and providing kinematic design data lot mat of building structures. This analysis was applied for design of substructure on elastic foundation. Mat of building structure may be consisdered as a thick plate on elastic foundation. Recently, as size of building structure becomes larger, mat area of building structure also tend to become target and building structure is supported on inhomogeneous foundation. In this paper, vibration analysis or rectangular thick plate is done by use or serendipity finite element with 8 nodes by considering shearing strain of plate. The solutions of this paper are compared with existing solutions and finite element solutions with 4${\times}$4 meshes of this analysis are shown the error of maximum 0.083% about the existing solutions. It is shown that natrural frequencies depend on not only Winkler foundation parameter but also shear foundation parameter.

In power system study, relibility assessment has been an important topic during past several decards because sudden power interruption can bring about enormous economic loss. although the size of a substation is smaller than that of generation system or transmission system, switching actions after fault(s) make reliability assessment of substation rather complex situations such as switching actions easily and permit various probability distributions in describing substation elements. Despite this ability of Monte Carlo simulation, one-parameter exponential distribution is still popular in this reliability assessment. This paper examines the characteristics of several two-parameter probability distributions, and offers new parameter decision rule based on average and variance of the target to be modelled. In case study, this paper shows the profits by using Weibull distribution which is one of two-parameter probabilistic distributions instead of exponential one.
