  • This oral history study explores the past and present Japanese menswear custom-tailoring culture. Two master tailors with more than 50 years of experience and two young tailors with less than a year of experience were interviewed about the tailor training process and environment, working conditions, thinking and behavior, and societal and governmental efforts for vitalizing custom-tailoring. The results indicate, first, a 10-year apprenticeship was required in the past, whereas young tailors today must register for three-year professional tailoring classes. Tailors then and now have been trained in a similar sequence of pants, vests, and jackets. Second, regarding working conditions, tailors had to provide gratitude services to their masters for a few years, even after their training ended. In contrast, young tailors today must continue a probationary period after their three-year schooling; however, they experience difficulty with finding tailoring shops for their probation. Third, in terms of thinking and behavior, master tailors learned their trade to earn a living, whereas young tailors today entered the field due to their interests in it. In addition, young tailors want a systematic learning process, whereas master tailors learned their skills while on the job. Last, tailoring academies today are run by tailoring shops and societies. Career exploration programs are offered to elementary and middle school students by the Kobe government in association with the local tailoring society to provide tailoring experiences.

  • The key to developing software with the lowest cost and highest quality is to implement or fit the software development process into a given environment. Generally, applying commercial or standard software development processes on a specific project can cause too much overhead if there is no effort to customize the given generic processes. Even though the customizing activities are done before starting the project, these activities are thoroughly dependent on the process engineers who have abundant experience and knowledge with tailoring processes. Owing to this dependence on human knowledge, it has been very difficult to explain the rationale for the results of process tailoring and it takes a long time to get the customized process that is applicable. Hence, we suggest a process tailoring method which adopts the artificial neural network based teaming theory to reduce the time consumed by process tailoring. Furthermore, we suggest the feedback loop mechanism to get higher accuracy in the neural network designed for the process tailoring. It can be done by reusing the process tailoring data results and determining its appropriateness level as sample data to the neural network. We proved the effectiveness of our process tailoring method through case studies using real historical data, which yielded abundant process tailoring results as sample data.

  • This article reviews the tailoring of engineered cementitious composites (ECC), a type of high performance fiber reinforced cementitious composites with a theoretical design basis, for special attributes or functions. The design basis, a set of analytic tools built on micromechanics, provides guidelines for tailoring of fiber, matrix, and fiber/matrix interfaces to attain tensile ductility in ECC. If conditions for controlled multiple cracking are disturbed by the need to introduce ingredients to attain a special attribute or function, micromechanics then serve as a systematic and rational means to efficiently recover composite tensile ductility. Three examples of ECCs with attributes of lightweight, high early strength, and self-healing functions, are used to illustrate these tailoring concepts. The fundamental approach, however, is broadly applicable to a wide variety of ECCs designed for targeted fresh and/or hardened characteristics required for specific applications.

  • Space agencies such as NASA, ESA, and the US military provide guidelines and standards for PA(product assurance) requirements and plans. In recent years, major satellite manufacturers around the world have been mitigating PA requirements and processes by tailoring. PA tailoring has been implemented to improve the cost and schedule efficiency. PA tailoring can be accomplished based on various factors such as mission, classification of mission risk, complexity, development cost, life cycle, etc. In this study, PA tasks according to the mission risk classification proposed by NASA are investigated, and the tailoring method is suggested for the optimization of the development cost and schedule. In particular, the classification of mission risk for the satellites under development or operation in Korea is performed, and PA characteristics in accordance with mission risk are analyzed.

  • Utilizing standards for software process to a specific project requires a tailoring process to meet the development domain. However, the existing tailoring schemes are not systematical and possible to use without analyzing the methodology and development domain. Also, it is not quite easy to apply them to similar projects. This paper includes: 1) systematical tailoring steps and 2) an automatic algOlithm for generating test process based on "a scheme of tailoring process using the component-based development paradigm"; 3) "an automation tool for tailoring, AutoTP" which is derived from XML techniques. Users can generate a tailored test process through our AutoTP automatically without analyzing standards. methodology and domain.

  • Compounds of polyketide origin possess a wealth of pharmacological effects, including antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, anticancer and immunosuppressive activities. Many of these compounds and their semisynthetic derivatives are used today in the clinic. Most of the gene clusters encoding commercially important drugs have also been cloned and sequenced and their biosynthetic mechanisms studied in great detail. The area of biosynthetic engineering of the enzymes involved in polyketide biosynthesis has recently advanced and been transferred into the industrial arena. In this work, we introduce a computational system to provide the user with a wealth of information that can be utilized for biosynthetic engineering of enzymes involved in post-PKS tailoring steps. Post-PKS tailoring steps are necessary to add functional groups essential for the biological activity and are therefore important in polyketide biosynthesis.

  • In order to analyze the tailorbility of different fabrics for men's suit, FAST system has been used for measuring the distribution of mechanical properties in this study. As results, cashmere mixed woolen fabrics showed the minimum degree in relaxation shrinkage, formability, and shear rigidity than any other fabrics, and also showed more than 6% as maximum level of extensibility. Thus, cashmere mixed woolen fabrics requires careful tailoring in lay-out, marking, and cutting. It is necessary to establish new tailoring criteria for automatic sewing with cashmere mixed woolen fabrics than any other fabrics, because they show more failure rate of tailorbility. There have been noticeably more variation of shrinkage and extension for woolen fabrics with cashmere mixed than 100% woolen fabrics by evaluating the formability of the suits when these are completed to suits through cutting and tailoring from fabrics. Especially nylon mixed woolen fabrics showed shrinkage overall, but polyester mixed woolen fabrics showed extension at waist area. Thus, it is necessary to adjust the appropriate overfeed rate considering the amount of shrinkage and extension while tailoring.

  • Purpose: Environment test aim to validate the guarantee of required capability of materiel against various environment conditions which exposed during materiel life-cycle. In this paper, environment test design procedure and tailoring guideline for Korean peninsula and periphery climate are proposed. Methods: To design tailoring guideline, climate data which are regarding Korean peninsula and periphery regions provided from Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) and National Climatic Data Center (NCDC) are used. Conclusion: For effective environment test, it is important that environment test have to design in considering environment conditions during materiel life-cycle. It is concluded that the high temperature test level can be softer than the test criteria in MIL-HDBK-310, however, the low temperature test level will be expected to be $2{\sim}6^{\circ}C$ harsher than MIL-HDBK-310.
