  • This paper describes a fuzzy-based system for analyzing the stress intensity factors (SIFs) of three-dimensional (3D) cracks. 3D finite element method(FEM) was used to obtain the SIF for subsurface cracks and surface cracks existing in inhomogeneous materials. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy theory. Nodes are generated by the bucketing method, and ten-noded quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. The singular elements such that the mid-point nodes near crack front are shifted at the quarter-points, and these are automatically placed along the 3D crack front. The complete FE model is generated, and a stress analysis is performed. The SIFs are calculated using the displacement extrapolation method. The results were compared with those surface cracks in homogeneous materials. Also, this system is applied to analyze cladding effect of surface cracks in inhomogeneous materials.

  • Recently, control theory including stochastic optimal control and various machine-learning-based artificial intelligence methods have become major tools in the field of financial engineering. In this paper, we briefly review some recent papers utilizing stochastic optimal control theory in the fields of the pair trading for mean-reverting markets and the trend-following strategy, and consider a couple of strategies utilizing both stochastic optimal control theory and machine learning methods to acquire more flexible and accessible tools. Illustrative simulations show that the considered strategies can yield encouraging results when applied to a set of real financial market data.

  • Robotics has emerged as an important field for the future. It is our vision that robots in future will be able to transcend these precincts and work side by side humans for the greater good of mankind. We developed a face robot for this purpose. However, Life like robots demands a certain level of intelligence. Some scientists have proposed an event based learning approach, in which the robot can be taken as a small child and through learning from surrounding entities develops its own personality. In fact some scientists have proposed an entire new personality of the robot itself in which robot can have its own internal states, intentions, beliefs, desires and feelings. Our approach should not only be to develop a robot personality model but also to understand human behavior and incorporate it into the robot model. Human's personality is very complex and rests on many factors like its physical surrounding, its social surrounding, and internal states and beliefs etc. This paper discusses the development of this platform to evaluate this and develop a standard by a society based approach including the cultural paradigm. For this purpose the fuzzy control theory is used. Since the fuzzy theory is very near human analytical thinking it provides a very good platform to develop such a model.

  • Since Lau and Murnighan first introduced the concept of faultlines in 1998, there are many extended studies related to faultlines theory. It is obvious that faultlines theory adds valuable explanations in addition to what numerous previous demographic studies have explored. However, previous research has not been able to fully integrate the characteristics embedded in the workplace environments, and the influence of faultlines in IT industries has yet to be explored. So it is not reasonable and convincing to extend the findings from previous faultlines research to other industries in the global world. In this study, IT related influence is given considerable weight into traditional faultlines theory and the impact of IT-based faultlines is revealed. Our study indicates that IT-based faultlines have negative impact on task conflict, process conflict and relationship conflict, and also have negative impact on individual outcomes such as individual performance and satisfaction. The influence of IT-based faultlines on people s intend to remain in the current organization is found to be insignificant. Our empirical study reconfirmed that faultlines are important indicator in group works and also that faultlines are intimately related to various conflicts and individual outcomes. We hope our research findings would be beneficial to the organizations concerned with effective and efficient group work.

  • As a solution to spectrum under-utilization problem, Cognitive radio (CR) introduces a dynamic spectrum access technology. In the area, one of the most important problems is how secondary users (SUs) should choose between the available channels, which means how to achieve load balancing between channels. We consider spectrum load balancing problem for CR system in frequency domain and especially in time domain. Our objective is to balance the load among the channels and balance the occupied time length of slots for a fixed channel dynamically in order to obtain a user-optimal solution. In frequency domain, we refer to Dynamic Noncooperative Scheme with Communication (DNCOOPC) used in distributed system and a distributed Dynamic Spectrum Load Balancing algorithm (DSLB) is formed based on DNCOOPC. In time domain, Spectrum Load Balancing method with QoS support is proposed based on Dynamic Feed Back theory and Hash Table (SLBDH). The performance of DSLB and SLBDH are evaluated. In frequency domain, DSLB is more efficient compared with existing Compare_And_Balance (CAB) algorithm and gets more throughput compared with Spectrum Load Balancing (SLB) algorithm. Also, DSLB is a fair scheme for all devices. In time domain, SLBDH is an efficient and precise solution compared with Spectrum Load Smoothing (SLS) method.

  • Game theory is a powerful tool for analyzing the Supply chain (SC) with different conflicting elements. Among them, the Stackelberg game is the one in which a player as leader has more power than the other ones as followers. Since in many SC systems one element has, in essence, more power than the others; the Stackelberg game has found many applications in SC studies. In this paper, we apply the Stackelberg game-theoretic approach and the corresponding equilibrium point to formulate and analyze a two echelon VMI SC. Comprehensive computational results on an experimental case are conducted to numerically analyze the performance of VMI system against three groups of critical parameters. Moreover, a critical comparison demonstrates the poorer performance of decentralized VMI system than centralized one. This naturally necessitates designing proper contracts between VMI partners in order to more effectively implement the realistic decentralized system.

  • In this paper, we arrange the concept of 'Green' in SCM after literature study of Green SCM and investigate causal relationships between influencing factors, practice level and environmental performance focused on Korean firms empirically and conduct path analysis for hypothesis test using partial least squares regression with bootstrap. Firstly, we divide influencing factors of Green SCM into environmental and organizational factors through the previous studies of innovation diffusion theory and environmental management theory, and then we selected 'uncertainty', 'competitiveness' as the environmental factors and 'top management support', 'perceived benefit', 'training' as the organizational factors. Secondly, we classify practice level of Green SCM into 'internal environmental management', 'green purchasing', 'eco-design'. Finally, we selected 'financial performance', 'environmental performance' as the organizational performance. We conducted a survey on the middle manager of manufacturing companies implementing SCM and an empirical analysis. The results of analysis show that there exist causal relationships between influencing factors, practice level, and environmental performance of Green SCM. We expect that the result of this study will suggest useful information to managers who are responsible for SCM to design and execute Green SCM in strategic perspectives.

  • This study aims to explore factors of Assimilation Gap(AG) which is proposed and illustrated by Fichman and Kemerer(1997). AG is defined as the time delay between adoption and deployment and mainly studied at the organizational level. This study derives the factor affecting AG through a review of technology acceptance models and agency theory. The research model consists of three groups of independent variables(IT knowledge burden, Individual characteristics, and organization characteristics) and a moderator, which is goal incongruence. Using multiple regression analyses, four groups of hypotheses are tested with data of 221 knowledge workers from various organizations through e-mail survey. The result shows that radicalness(a dimension of knowledge burden), personal innovativeness, self-efficacy, and organizational support are statistically significant factors while complexity, experience, and perceived critical mass are not supported. The moderator effects of goal incongruence are found in personal innovativeness and organizational support. The results of this study demonstrate that agency theory is a useful perspective to deal with AG, especially in radical innovation. In addition, IT practitioners should consider not only user training but also incentives and possible organizational controls in implementing a new information technology.

  • The interests in alternative office systems and solutions (called smart work in Korea) are growing. With the lens of boundary theory, this paper tries to understand the nature of work/nonwork boundaries which smart work will be expected to blur. Boundary theory provides permeability, boundary strength, and interference as its key concepts and an empirical study is performed about the individual perception on those concepts. The result of the survey from telecommuters and/or smart work center users at the Company K shows that they perceive work/nonwork permeability, boundary strength, and interference are asymmetric. The result suggests that asymmetric nature of the work/nonwork boundaries should be taken into account when alternative office systems are brought into use.

  • In this paper, the broad-band design theory for weakly-coupled Tap-Off for CATV systems has been described and the transmission line impedance matching method has been proposed. The fabricated weakly-coupled Tap-Offs based on the above theory and method have been much improved in the frequency characteristics compared with conventional ones. Thus, the useful bandwidth of weakly-coupled Tap-Offs have been extended from 5 to 2000 MHz. It is also recognized that turn numbers of the coils composing the transformer are not integers but 0.9, 1, 1.9, 2, 2.9, etc., in the actual circuits. Further, the practical measurements of the frequency characteristics for a fabricated weakly-coupled Tap-Off show very good agreements with theoretical results, and hence, the validity of the proposed design theory and transmission line impedance matching method have been confirmed.
