  • During problem solving, "mathematical thought process" is a systematic sequence of thoughts triggered between logic and insight. The test questions are formulated into several areas of questioning-types which can reveal rather different result. The lower level questions are to investigate individual ability to solve multiple mathematical problems while using "mathematical thought." During problem solving, "mathematical thought process" is a systematic sequence of thoughts triggered between logic and insight. The scope of this case study is to present a desirable model in solving mathematical problems and to improve teaching methods for math teachers.

  • Recent research has documented that there is a close relationship between problem posing and problem solving in arithmetic. However, most studies investigated the relationship between problem posing and problem solving only by means of standard problem situations. In order to overcome that shortcoming, a pilot study with Chinese fourth-graders was done to investigate this relationship using a non-standard, realistic problem situation. The results revealed a significant positive relationship between students' problem posing and solving abilities. Based on that pilot study, a more extensive and systematic ascertaining study was carried out to confirm the observed relationship between problem posing and problem solving among Chinese elementary school children. Results confirmed that there was indeed a close relationship between both skills.

  • There are many quality control(QC) tools useful for solving quality problems. In this paper, QC 7 tools, new QC 7 tools, and other quality tools are first compared with respect to their frequency of use. We suggest an integrated problem-solving procedure to systematically deal with various quality problems. For each step a streamlined flow chart is presented to help the practitioners to adopt relevant tools depending on certain situations they face. The procedure will help quality practitioners solve field quality problems.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate how students' mathematical creativity changes through problem-solving instruction using problem-posing for elementary school students and to explore instructional methods to improve students' mathematical creativity in school curriculum. In this study, nonequivalent control group design was adopted, and the followings are main results. First, problem-solving lessons with problem-posing had a significant effect on students' mathematical creativity, and all three factors of mathematical creativity(fluency, flexibility, originality) were also significant. Second, the lessons showed meaningful results for all upper, middle, and lower groups of pupils according to the level of mathematical creativity. When analyzing the effects of sub-factors of mathematical creativity, there was no significant effect on fluency in the upper and middle groups. Based on the results, we suggest followings: First, there is a need for a systematic guidance plan that combines problem-solving and problem-posing, Second, a long-term lesson plan to help students cultivate novel mathematical problem-solving ability through insights. Third, research on teaching and learning methods that can improve mathematical creativity even for students with relatively high mathematical creativity is necessary. Lastly, various student-centered activities in math classes are important to enhance creativity.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among critical thinking disposition, problem solving ability, and triage competency in nurses working in Emergency Rooms (ERs). Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted in August and September 2021, involved 118 ER nurses from three hospitals in the Gyeonggi-do metropolitan area. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple linear regression analysis using SPSS for Windows version 25.0. Results: The mean score of triage competency among ER nurses was 87.63±15.65. In the regression model, age, ER experience, triage experience, critical thinking disposition, and problem solving ability predicted 52% of the triage competency. Both critical thinking disposition and problem-solving ability were noted to be significant (β=.32, p<.001; β=.36, p<.001, respectively). Conclusion: Critical thinking disposition and problem solving ability of ER nurses were identified as major factors in triage competency. To improve ER nurses' triage competency and enhance critical thinking disposition and problem solving ability, a systematic and ongoing program should be developed and implemented.

  • Problem sovling skill is one of the core skills in mathematics education. To improve students' problem solving skill, the project approach or project based learning has been developed and applied. A teaching and learning strategy utilizing 'project' encourages students to understand the problem embedded in the project, find and reflect the solution, which might be effective in improving students' problem solving skill. The present study systematically reviews literature regarding project based learning and analyzes the characteristics of project. The findings from the systematic review illuminate an appropriate approach to apply project based learning in mathematics classrooms.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a Korean problem solving process inventory (K-PSPI) for adults. Method: A conceptual framework for the adult problem solving process, and 40 preliminary questions were developed based on references and expert consultations. After a pilot test, preliminary questions were further refined. The final inventory of 30 items was tested with 1,500 adults. The validity and reliability of the K-PSPI were tested by factor analysis using the SPSS Windows 12.0 program. Results: Through factor analysis on the final 30 questions, 5 factors were identified and cumulative variant of the factors was 52.15%. For the test of reliability of the 30 questions on the problem-solving process, The Cronbach alpha was .93. Conclusion: This study showed that the K-PSPI is a systematic method with verifies reliability and validity. It is not only adequate for the actual circumstance and culture of Korean adults, but is also a useful instrument to test post-action problem solving ability.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of simulation practice education applying problem-based learning on problem-solving ability, critical thinking disposition, and learning satisfaction of nursing students. 63 nursing students taking the practice subject for integrated simulation at U University in K region were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire to collect data before and after the simulation practice. The simulation practice education applying problem-based learning was effective in improving problem-solving ability and learning satisfaction significantly and positive correlation was found among problem-solving ability, critical thinking disposition, and learning satisfaction; that is, the better problem-solving ability, the higher level of critical thinking disposition and learning satisfaction. While the results of this study conducted in nursing students at a single university cannot be generalized, it was confirmed that simulation practice education applying problem-based learning was an effective teaching method in improving problem-solving ability and learning satisfaction of nursing students. It is therefore necessary to give simulation practice education applying problem-based learning on a systematic and continuous basis with the objective of improving problem-solving ability and learning satisfaction and promoting critical thinking disposition.

  • TRIZ is one of the most famous tools for creative problem solving. However, it is said that TRIZ is complicated and difficult to understand and apply to solve problems. In order to resolve these difficulties, this paper presents S-ARIZ, a simplified ARIZ(the algorithm for inventive problem solving). S-ARIZ revised ARIZ-85C on two ways. First, cause and effect analysis is used to define core technical contradictions and control parameters for the physical contradictions. Second, we add 5 inventive principles which revised SIT(systematic inventive thinking) partially to IFR-1 definition (Step 3-2 of ARIZ-85C) to solve the intensified technical contradictions systematically and effectively. It is expect that S-ARIZ can contribute to the rapid spread of TRIZ.
