  • The mortality rate of car-pedestrian accidents is quite high, compared to the frequency of accidents. Researches on pedestrian protection are being actively performed worldwide. The A-pillar and lower part of the wind shield cause the most serious damage to the pedestrians. Typical devises to protect the pedestrians are the hood lift system and pedestrian airbag. The design of such devices for an sport utility vehicle is performed based on a design process using design of experiments (DOE). The design results are obtained by an orthogonal array (OA), analysis of mean (ANOM) and analysis of variance (ANOVA). A metamodel is also used in the design process.

  • Micro-drill wear deteriorates accuracy and productivity of the micro components. In order to improve productivity and qualify of micro components, it is required to investigate micro-drill wear exactly. In this study, a machine vision system is proposed to measure the wear of micro-drills using a precision servo stage. Calibration experiments are conducted to compensate for the machine vision system. In this paper, worn volume, area and length are defined as wear amounts. Micro-drill wear is reconstructed as the 3D topography and the quantized wear amount by using the shape from focus (SFF) method and wear parameters. Experiments have been conducted with HSS twist micro-drills and SM45C carbon steel workpieces. Validity of the proposed machine vision system is confirmed through experiments.

  • In this paper, we review the conventional speaker verification algorithm and present the text-dependent speaker verification system for application over telephone lines and its result of experiments. We apply blind-segmentation algorithm which segments speech into sub-word unit without linguistic information to the speaker verification system for training speaker model effectively with limited enrollment data. And the World-mode] that is created from PBW DB for score normalization is used. The experiments are presented in implemented system using database, which were constructed to simulate field test, and are shown 3.3% EER.

  • Transport of Escherichia coli ATCC 11105 through porous media was investigated in this study using two sets of column experiments to quantify the attachment-related parameters (sticking efficiency, attachment rate coefficient and filter factor). The first set of experiments was performed in quartz sand under different ionic strength conditions (1, 20, 100, 200 mM) while the second experiments were carried out in quartz sand mixed with metal oxyhydroxide-coated sand (0, 5, 10, 25%). The breakthrough curves of bacteria were obtained by monitoring effluent, and then bacterial mass recovery and attachment-related parameters were quantified from these curves. The first experiments showed that the mass recoveries were in the range of 13.3 to 64.7%, decreasing with increasing ionic strength. In the second experiments, the mass recoveries were in the range of 15.0 to 43.4%, decreasing with increasing coated sand content. The analysis indicated that the sticking efficiency, attachment rate coefficient and filter factor increased with increasing ionic strength and coated sand content. The value of filter factor in the first experiments ranged from 1.45 e-2 to 6.72 e-2 1/cm while in the second experiments it ranged from 2.78 e-2 to 6.32 e-2 1/cm. Our filter factor values are one order of magnitude lower than those from other studies. This discrepancy can be attributed to the size of sand used in the experiment. The analysis demonstrated that the travel distance of bacteria estimated using the filter factor can be varied greatly depending on the solution chemistry and charge heterogeneity of porous media.

  • In order to minimize casualties from marine vessel accidents that occur frequently at home and abroad, it is important to ensure the safety of the passengers aboard the vessel in the event of an accident. There is an EPIRB system as a system for disaster preparedness in the marine situation currently on the market, but there is a problem that the price is very expensive. In order to overcome the cost problem, which is a disadvantage of previous system, LoRaWAN-based communication is used. LoRaWAN communication-based vessel positioning and risk detection system based on LoRaWAN communication transmits measurement data of each module using two Beacon and GPS modules to stably perform position measurement for both indoor and outdoor situations. The rider danger situation detection system can detect the safety status of the rider using the 3-axis acceleration sensor, collect data from the rider positioning system and the rider safety status detection system, and send to server using LoRa communication. When conducting communication experiments in the long-distance maritime situation and actual communication experiments using the implemented system, it was found that the two experiments showed over 90% communication success rate on average.

  • JAEA started the LSTF experiments in 1985 for the fourth stage of the ROSA Program (ROSA-IV) for the LWR thermal-hydraulic safety research to identify and investigate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena and to confirm the effectiveness of ECCS during small-break LOCAs and operational transients. The LSTF experiments are underway for the ROSA-V Program and the OECD/NEA ROSA Project that intends to resolve issues in thermal-hydraulic analyses relevant to LWR safety. Six types of the LSTF experiments have been done for both the system integral and separate-effect experiments among international members from 14 countries. Results of four experiments for the ROSA Project are briefly presented with analysis by a best-estimate (BE) code and a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code to illustrate the capability of the LSTF and codes to simulate the thermal-hydraulic phenomena that may appear during SBLOCAs and transients. The thermal-hydraulic phenomena dealt with are coolant mixing and temperature stratification, water hammer up to high system pressure, natural circulation under high core power condition, and non-condensable gas effect during asymmetric SG depressurization as an AM action.

  • The present work concerns optimal design for the injection molding process of a deflection yoke (coil separator). The optimal design for the injection molding process is developed using design of experiments and finite element analysis. Two design of experiments approaches are applied such as: the design of experiment for mold design and the design the experiments for determination of process parameters. Finite element analyses have been carried out as a design of experiments for mold design: runner system and cooling channel. In order to determine optimal process experiments have been performed for various process conditions with the design of experiments scheduling.

  • A spectroelectrochemical system assembled with a white light source, bifurcated optical fiber, Oriel Multispec spectrograph, and a charge-coupled device (CCD) detector is described. The system is shown to be capable of acquiring a whole spectrum in the spectral range of 290-800 nm in 25 ms or a longer period during electrochemical experiments at reflective working electrodes such as platinum or mercury. The utility of the system in studying electrochemical reactions during the potential scan, galvanostatic electrolysis, or after the potential step is demonstrated.

  • This paper describes development of Polarized Stereo Monitoring System (KAERI-PSM) and compares the remote handling performance of KAERI-PSM with that of other monitoring systems, electric shutter type stereo monitoring system and general TV monitoring system. Remote handling performance is evaluated by total time and error number on remote operating experiments. Four kinds of remote handling experiments are carried out through 1) directly 2) general TV 3) electric shutter type monitor, and 4) KAERI-PSM. In these experiments six employees are participated and PUMA robot with force-torque reflectional joystic is used. The result of experiments show that camera angle against object is significant factor in monitoring and stereo monitoring system give more performance benifits in terms of accuracy and speed of remote handling operation than general TV monitoring system. In comparision of the polarized and electric shutter type stereo monitoring system, both have similar accuracy and speed for remote handling operation, but the former is superior in image quality and stability of the performance.
