In this study, the objective is determine the optimal design variable of engine mount system using the rubber mount of bush-type which is usually utilized in passive control to minimize vibrations of vehicle body or transmission from engine into body. The engine model adopted in this study is 4-cylinder, 4-stroke gasoline engine support- ed by 4-points. The system is modelled in 10 d.o.f.-rigid body motion of the engine & transmission in 6 d.o.f., elastic motion of vehicle body in 4 d.o.f.(1st torsional, 1st vertical and 1st & 2nd lateral bending vibration mode). To consider the elastic motion of vehicle body, find the eigenvalues and mode shapes of vehicle body by nodal testing and then determine the modal masses and stiffnesses of the body. The design variables of the engine mount system are locations, stiffness and damping coefficients of the rubber mounts(28 design variables). In case of considering the torque-roll axis for the engine, the design variables of the mount system are reduced to 22 design variables. The objective functions in optimal design process are considered by three cases, that is, 1) transmitted forces through engine mounts, 2) acceleration components of generalized coordinates for the vibration of vehicle body, 3) acceleration of specified location(where gear box) of body. three case are analyzed and compared with each other.
Heavy-weight floor impact noise is directly related to the impact source and floor vibration property. Dynamic properties of the standard floating floor that is used in Korea was investigated using accelerance, acceleration energy spectral density(ESD), and structural modal test. In the standard floating floor, natural frequency was decreased by the finishing mortar mass and the damping ratio was increased. Bang-machine force spectrum acting on the concrete slab can be calculated using inverse system analysis. Impact force acting on concrete slab is changed by interaction of finishing mortar and resilient material. The amplitude of the bang-machine force spectrum was amplified in low frequency range(below 100 Hz), and over 100 Hz was decreased. Changed force spectrum influence to the response of structure vibration, so the heavy-weight floor impact noise level was changed.
In this paper, a method is presented to identify the physical and modal parameters of multistory shear building based on substructural technique using block pulse generalized operational matrix and genetic algorithm. The substructure approach divides a complete structure into several substructures in order to significantly reduce the number of unknown parameters for each substructure so that identification processes can be independently conducted on each substructure. Block pulse functions are set of orthogonal functions that have been used in recent years as useful tools in signal characterization. Assuming that the input-outputs data of the system are known, their original BP coefficients can be calculated using numerical method. By using generalized BP operational matrices, substructural dynamic vibration equations can be converted into algebraic equations and based on BP coefficient for each story can be estimated. A cost function can be defined for each story based on original and estimated BP coefficients and physical parameters such as mass, stiffness and damping can be obtained by minimizing cost functions with genetic algorithm. Then, the modal parameters can be computed based on physical parameters. This method does not require that all floors are equipped with sensor simultaneously. To prove the validity, numerical simulation of a shear building excited by two different normally distributed random signals is presented. To evaluate the noise effect, measurement random white noise is added to the noise-free structural responses. The results reveal the proposed method can be beneficial in structural identification with less computational expenses and high accuracy.
It is well known that wall impedance essentially determines how sound wave transmits from one place to another. The wall impedance is related with its dynamic properties : for example, the mass, stiffness, and damping characteristics. It is noteworthy, however, that the wall impedance is also function of spatial characteristics of two spaces that is separated by the wall. This is often referred that the wall is not locally reacting. In this paper, we have attempted to see how the acoustic characteristics of the two spaces is affected by various structure parameters such as density, applied tension, and a normalized length of the wall. Calculations are conducted for two different modally reacting boundary conditions by modal expansion method. The variation of the Helmholtz mode and the structural-dominated mode are analyzed as the structure parameters vary. The displacement distribution of the structure, pressure and active intensity of the inside and outside cavity are presented at the Helmholtz mode and the structure-dominated mode. It is shown that the frequency characteristics are governed by both structure-and fluid-dominated mode. The results exhibit that the density of the structure is the most sensitive design parameter on the frequency characteristics for the coupling system as we could imagine in the beginning. The Helmholtz mode frequency decrease as density increases. However. it increases as applied tension and an opening size increase. The bandwidth of the Helmholtz mode is mainly affected by density of the structure and its opening size.
A series of wind tunnel free-decay sectional model dynamic tests were conducted to examine the effects of torsional-to-vertical natural frequency ratio of 2DOF bridge dynamic systems on the aerodynamic and dynamic properties of bridge decks. The natural frequency ratios tested were around 2.2:1 and 1.2:1 respectively, with the fundamental vertical natural frequency of the system held constant for all the tests. Three 2.9 m long twin-deck bridge sectional models, with a zero, 16% (intermediate gap) and 35% (large gap) gap-to-width ratio, respectively, were tested to determine whether the effects of frequency ratio are dependent on bridge deck cross-section shapes. The results of wind tunnel tests suggest that for the model with a zero gap-width, a model to approximate a thin flat plate, the flutter derivatives, and consequently the aerodynamic forces, are relatively independent of the torsional-to-vertical frequency ratio for a relatively large range of reduced wind velocities, while for the models with an intermediate gap-width (around 16%) and a large gap-width (around 35%), some of the flutter derivatives, and therefore the aerodynamic forces, are evidently dependent on the frequency ratio for most of the tested reduced velocities. A comparison of the modal damping ratios also suggests that the torsional damping ratio is much more sensitive to the frequency ratio, especially for the two models with nonzero gap (16% and 35% gap-width). The test results clearly show that the effects of the frequency ratio on the flutter derivatives and the aerodynamic forces were dependent on the aerodynamic cross-section shape of the bridge deck.
A series of wind tunnel sectional model dynamic tests of a twin-deck bridge were conducted at the CLP Power Wind/Wave Tunnel Facility (WWTF) of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) to investigate the effects of gap-width on the self-excited vibrations and the dynamic and aerodynamic characteristics of the bridge. Five 2.9 m long models with different gap-widths were fabricated and suspended in the wind tunnel to simulate a two-degrees-of-freedom (2DOF) bridge dynamic system, free to vibrate in both vertical and torsional directions. The mass, vertical frequency, and the torsional-to-vertical frequency ratio of the 2DOF systems were fixed to emphasize the effects of gap-width. A free-vibration test methodology was employed and the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm (ERA) was utilized to extract the eight flutter derivatives and the modal parameters from the coupled free-decay responses. The results of the zero gap-width configuration were in reasonable agreement with the theoretical values for an ideal thin flat plate in smooth flow and the published results of models with similar cross-sections, thus validating the experimental and analytical techniques utilized in this study. The methodology was further verified by the comparison between the measured and predicted free-decay responses. A comparison of results for different gap-widths revealed that variations of the gap-width mainly affect the torsional damping property, and that the configurations with greater gap-widths show a higher torsional damping ratio and hence stronger aerodynamic stability of the bridge.
In this study, we suggested a slim-type actuator that can be controlled in radial direction for compensating coma aberration in high-capacity optical storage devices. To deal successfully with narrow space in slim-type optical pick-up for notebook pc device, additional yokes for tilting motion are integrated into main yoke of the actuator. And the location of tilting coils is determined for mass-b3lancing effect to achieve optimal configuration for high driving sensitivity. We also suggested new concept of lens holder to guarantee excellent stability of control system by enhancing the gain margin at secondary resonant frequency. The concept was realized by forming damping sections in the lens holder, which prevent vibrational energy from transferring to lens. An exclusive measurement system was newly developed for fast and precise measurement of dynamic characteristics of actuators and utilized for the practical use. We hope to make good use of this system also in time to come.
It is attempted to estimate excitation force of a linear vibratory system using measured vibration responses. The excitation force is estimated from the relationship between the vibration response and system characteristic matrices which are extracted from both the mathematical model of the system and actual response in contrast to the usual approach of inverting the frequency response matrices. This extraction scheme is based on the fact that the vibration response can be expressed in term of linear combination of frequency domain modal vectors defined as mutually orthonormal basis vectors in frequency domain. The extracted frequency domain basis vectors are very stable in computational manipulation. It is found that the estimated excitation force is in good agreement with actually measured force except at the natural frequencies the structure, which is the common feature still to be overcome by the research efforts in this area. From the results of this paper, this disagreement is considered to come from the discrepancy between the model and actual value of the mass, damping and stiffness of the structure.
Shanghai Tower is a 632-meter super high-rise building located in an area with wind and active earthquake. A sophisticated structural health monitoring (SHM) system consisting of more than 400 sensors has been built to carry out a long-term monitoring for its operational safety. In this paper, a reduced-order model including 31 elements was generated from a full model of this super tall building. An iterative regularized matrix method was proposed to tune the system parameters, making the dynamic characteristic of the reduced-order model be consistent with those in the full model. The updating reduced-order model can be regarded as a benchmark model for further analysis. A long-term monitoring for structural dynamic characteristics of Shanghai Tower under different construction stages was also investigated. The identified results, including natural frequency and damping ratio, were discussed. Based on the data collected from the SHM system, the dynamic characteristics of the whole structure was investigated. Compared with the result of the finite element model, a good agreement can be observed. The result provides a valuable reference for examining the evolution of future dynamic characteristics of this super tall building.
