Preparation of $Al_2O_3-SiC$ Composite Powder by SHS Method (SHS법에 의한 $Al_2O_3-SiC$ 복합분말의 합성)

  • High reaction heat evolved from the oxidation of Al was used to synthesize SiC, which might be difficult to be formed by SHS. Al2O3-SiC composite powder was easily manufactured using KNO3 as an ignition and reaction catalyst. Unreacted Si and C were observed after reaction dependent upon the composition of starting powders, reaction atmosphere and relative densities of compacted bodies. The unreacted carbon could be removed by calcining at $600^{\circ}C$ and the remaining Si could be removed by dissolving in NaOH solution. The final powder particles were smaller than 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in size.

Low Pressure Synthesis of Silica Aerogels by Supercritical Drying (초임계 건조에 의한 실리카 에어로겔의 저압 합성)

  • Silica Aerogels with the density and porosity of 0.1g/cm3 and 96% were synthesized by two different supercri-tical drying processes (i.e additional solvent and intial pressure methods) Isoptopanol was chosen as sol-gel and supercritical drying solvents in order to synthesize aerogels at the lower temperature and pressure because the critical values of isopropanol are lower than those of methanol and ethanol commonly used. The P-V-T relationship of isopropanol was experimentally described for optimizing supercritical drying conditions such as the amount of extra solvent and supercritical drying temperature and pressure. In the addional solvent method monolithic and transparent aerogels were obtained by supercritical drying at 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 900 psing after 40% of the reactor volume was filled with isopropanol. Crack-free aerogels were synthesized at 25$0^{\circ}C$ and 1100~1200 psig by the initial pressure method with an intial nitrogen gas pressure of 400 psig and the isopropanol amount of 5% of the reactor volume.

Synthesis of AlN-SiO2-Al2O3 System (AlN-SiO2-Al2O3계로부터 AlN-Polytypes의 제조)

  • In order to synthesize AlN-polytypes from AlN-SiO2-Al2O3 system, composition A (AlN/SiO2/Al2O3=1/0.3/0.05, mole ratio) and composition B(AlN-SiO2-Al2O3=1/0.2/0.05, mole ratio) were used. AlN-polytypes were produced by nitriding the mixture at 175$0^{\circ}C$~190$0^{\circ}C$ under N2 atmosphere. For lower reaction temperature, 15R phase was produced and in the case of higher reaction temperature, AlN phase was only produced. As each composition was heated at 185$0^{\circ}C$ in N2 atmosphere, produced main phases were 15R phase for composition A and 21R phase for composition B respectively. The fracture surfaces of produced reactants showed porous skeleton structure.

  • Microwave heating (MW) was studied for the sintering of amorphous powders. In comparison to conventional heating (CV), the results show that microwave heating has the potential to substantially accelerate the sintering process and allow for highly densified solidification by eliminating the pores and increasing the shrinkage rate. In the heat treatment to synthesize aluminum borate ($Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$) whiskers from precursors, it was found that microwave heating helps the formation of $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$ crystal as well as the decrease of crystallization temperature of $Al_{18}B_4O_{33}$ to a level significantly lower than the previously reported value of $1050^{\circ}C$.

  • High temperature annealing is required to synthesize graphene using CVD. When thin metal catalyst is used for the synthesis, the high temperature pre-annealing makes the thin catalyst highly agglomerated. We investigated the agglomeration effect on the shape of the synthesized graphene. It is found that high temperature annealing makes randomly distributed many hole or blister on metal catalyst, and the synthesized graphene features floral pattern around the hole. The floral patterns of graphene turned out to be multi-layers and higher D peaks in raman spectrum.

  • 본 논문에서는 저고도 탐지레이다 센서체계의 주파수 합성기는 송수신 장치의 기준 주파수원으로 이용될 국부 발진 주파수들을 생성해 내는 주파수 합성부에 대해 설명되었다. 주파수 합성기의 성능을 평가하기위하여 각 주파수 원들의 위상잡음 특성과 주파수 합성기의 스위칭 시간을 신호 혼합기를 이용하여 측정 하였으며, 그 결과 설계 시 제시한 30(usec)이하인 약18usec의 스위칭 시간이 대부분을 차지함을 알 수 있었다. 주파수 합성기에서 생성된 최종 출력 주파수는 저고도 탐지 레이다의 송수신 장치의 국부발진 주파수로 이용되므로 출력 레벨의 flatness를 측정하여 분석한다.

  • In the present paper we propose a new method of intermediate view reconstruction between stereo images using belief propagation_based stereo matching. Intermediate view reconstruction is an important step for multiview 3D display. Many previous paper about intermediate view reconstruction using depth information to synthesize interview though stereo matching were proposed. But depth information is different to estimated accurately. In the present paper, in order to obtain accurate depth information, belief propagation_based stereo matching was used.

Discrimination of Synthesized English Vowels by American and Korean Listeners

  • This study explored the discrimination of synthesized English vowel pairs by twenty-seven American and Korean, male and female listeners. The average formant values of nine monophthongs produced by ten American English male speakers were employed to synthesize the vowels. Then, subjects were instructed explicitly to respond to AX discrimination tasks in which the standard vowel was followed by another one with the increment or decrement of the original formant values. The highest and lowest formant values of the same vowel quality were collected and compared to examine patterns of vowel discrimination. Results showed that the American and Korean groups discriminated the vowel pairs almost identically and their center formant frequency values of the high and low boundary fell almost exactly on those of the standards. In addition, the acceptable range of the same vowel quality was similar among the language and gender groups. The acceptable thresholds of each vowel formed oval to maintain perceptual contrast from adjacent vowels. The results suggested that nonnative speakers with high English proficiency could match native speakers' performance in discriminating vowel pairs with a shorter inter-stimulus interval. Pedagogical implications of those findings are discussed.

Estimation and Watermarking of Motion Parameters in Model Based Image Coding

  • In order to achieve an advanced human-computer interface system, it is necessary to analyze and synthesize facial motions just as they are in an interactive way, and to protect them from unwanted use and/or illegal use for their privacy, various uses in applications and the costs of obtaining motion parameters. To estimate facial motion, a method of using skin color distribution, luminance, and geometrical information of a face is employed. Digital watermarks are embedded into facial motion parameters and then these parameters are scrambled so that it cannot be understood. Experimental results show high accuracy and efficiency of the proposed estimation method and the usefulness of the proposed watermarking method.

English Syntactic Disambiguation Using Parser's Ambiguity Type Information

  • This paper describes a rule-based approach for syntactic disambiguation used by the English sentence parser in E-TRAN 2001, an English-Korean machine translation system. We propose Parser's Ambiguity Type Information (PATI) to automatically identify the types of ambiguities observed in competing candidate trees produced by the parser and synthesize the types into a formal representation. PATI provides an efficient way of encoding knowledge into grammar rules and calculating rule preference scores from a relatively small training corpus. In the overall scoring scheme for sorting the candidate trees, the rule preference scores are combined with other preference functions that are based on statistical information. We compare the enhanced grammar with the initial one in terms of the amount of ambiguity. The experimental results show that the rule preference scores could significantly increase the accuracy of ambiguity resolution.
