  • The on-board appendages of satellites with mechanical moving parts such as the fly-wheel, the control-moment gyro, the cryocooler, and the gimbal-type directional antenna can generate an undesirable micro-vibration disturbance, which is one of the main causes of the image-quality degradation that affects high-resolution observation satellites. Consequently, the isolation of the micro-vibration issue has always been considered as salient, and the micro-vibration is therefore the focus of this study wherein a complex system that can provide the dual functions of a guaranteed vibration-isolation performance and electrical energy harvesting is proposed. The vibration-isolation and energy-harvesting performances of the complex system are predicted through a numerical analysis based on the characteristics that are obtained from component-level tests. In addition, the effectiveness of the complex system that is proposed in this study is verified through an assembly-level functional-performance test.

  • This paper presents the design and implementation of a performance-driven logic synthesis system that automatically generates circuits satisfying the given timing and fanout constraints in minimal silicon area. After performing technology independent and dependent optimization, the system identifies and resynthesizes the gates with large loading delay due to excessive fanouts to eliminate the critical path. Experimental results for MCNC benchmark circuits show that proposed system generates the circuits with less delay by up to 20%.

  • A $Pd(OAc)_2/(o-MeOPh)_3P$ system has been developed for the catalytic Suzuki coupling of aryl bromides with arylboronic acids. Our catalyst system covers a broad spectrum of commonly available arylboronic acids and aryl bromides to provide biaryls in very good yields. The catalyst system works very well in the synthesis of sterically hindered biaryls.

  • With the study for identifying the transmission characteristics of vibration and noise generated by operating engine system of a vehicle, recently many engineers have studied actively the reduction of vibration and noise inducing uncomfortableness to the passenger. In this study, output noise was analyzed by multi-dimensional spectral analysis and vector synthesis method. The multi-dimensional analysis method is very effective in case of identification of primary source, but this method has little effect on suggestion for interior noised reduction. For compensation of this, vector synthesis method was used to obtain effective method for interior noise reduction, after identifying primary source for output noise. In this paper, partial coherence function of each input was calculated to know which input was most coherent to output noise, then with simulation of changes for input magnitude and phase by vector synthesis diagram, the trends of synthesized output vector was obtained. As a result, the change of synthesized output vector could be estimated.

  • Zirconia (ZrO2) materials are widely used in a variety of energy systems and devices. When nanorod-shaped ZrO2 is used as energy materials, ionic conductivity and mechanical strength can be improved compared to the characteristics of conventional spherical-shaped nanomaterials. In this study, we synthesized ZrO2 nanorods and investigated the shape change of them depending on various synthesis conditions such as precursor concentration, synthesis temperature, synthesis period, and aging period. The obtained nanorods were casted into a membrane for alkaline water electrolysis system and subjected to basic performance evaluation for use as a separator. The structure and the shape of the nanorods were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the like.

  • Intermetallic Ti-Si system ceramics were synthesized from stochiometric mixtures of titanium and silicone powders in vacuum by Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis(SHS). In each cases of Ti5Si3, Ti5Si4 and TiSi, and TiSi2 synthesis, 20wt% product dilution, direct ignition and SHS chemical furnace method were employed. The combustion modes, which were observed during the synthesis process by using the high speed camera, of Ti5Si3, Ti5Si4, TiSi, and TiSi2 exhibit spin, osciallatory, steady-state, and spin combustion, respectively. With increasing Ti/Si molar ratio an decrease of combustion velocities was found. From the results on the measurement of the flexural strength, the specimen hot pressed at 135$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 min using synthesized Ti5Si4 powders showed the highest flexural strength at 215 MPa.

  • This paper deals with a method for finding the physical structure of dynamic systems which shows reasonable response to a given specifiation. The method uses only four basic models of bond graph prototypes which have been originally proposed by the authors as a general model for dynamic systems, and then makes its procedure highly physical in the sense that it can synthesize a dynamic system through the structural transformation directly on bond graph models without any mathematical manipulation. Also, it is shown that this method has further advantages in optimizing parameters for an existing system rather than developing design concepts for a new device, the latter being more suitable using the so-called analytical synthesis method introduced by Park and Redfield. One example serves to trace the outlines of the direct synthesis method proposed in this paper for dynamic systems in terms of bond graph prototypes.

  • The purpose of this study was to synthesize and interpret the findings of previous qualitative studies that investigated the lived experiences of Korean emerging adults who aged out of the foster care system. Based on our selection criteria, we extracted and analyzed 14 papers that were published between 2010 to 2023. Our meta-synthesis found that the emerging adults' life world consisted of seven domains: family experience, life tasks, education and work, financial issues, home and family, interpersonal relationships, and psychological and emotional issues. We restructured the emerging adults' lived experiences using van Manen's concepts of lived time, lived space, lived things, lived self-other, and lived body. Our meta-synthesis revealed that these emerging adults experienced multidimensional difficulties due to shortcomings of formal and informal social support after aging out of the foster care system. Their difficulties accumulated in their interaction with lived time. Based on the level of their accumulated difficulties, we categorized the emerging adults into stable, struggling, and isolated groups. However, it is important to note that many of them adapted to their own life world and strived to move forward. This qualitative meta-synthesis provides a comprehensive understanding and new interpretation of emerging adults who transition from foster care to independent living in the context of Korea.

  • Phosphatidylglycerol(PG) and two unnatural phospholipids, phosphatidylethyleneglycol (PEG) and phosphatidylpropyleneglycol(PPG), were synthesized from ovolecithin using cabbage phospholipase D(PLD) in a emulsion system. Optimum pH and temperature for the enzymatic synthesis of PG, PEG and PPG in the emulsion system was 5.0-5.6 and 37$^{\circ}C$, respectively. The maximum activity for transphosphatidylation was obtained with 30-80 mM Ca++. Addition of 25% glycerol was required to convert completely ovolecithin to PG, whereas 16% glycerol was sufficient to attain the highest rate of conversion for both PEG and PPG syntheses, the highest conversion rate was obtained with addition of either 10% ethyleneglycol or propyleneglycol. However, the concentration of alcoholic acceptor should be increased up to 20% to improve selectivity up to 100% for PEG or PPG synthesis. Identification of PEG and PPG was made by analyzing the polyvalent alcohols released after their hydrolysis by HCl or PLD.

  • Complex structures are usually assembled from several substructures with joints connecting them together. These joints have significant effects on the dynamic behavior of the assembled structure and must be accurately modeled. In structural analysis, these joints are often simplified by assuming ideal boundary conditions. However, the dynamic behavior predicted on the basis of the simplified model may have significant errors. This has prompted the researchers to include the effect of joint stiffness in the structural model and to estimate the stiffness parameters using inverse dynamics. In the present work, structural joints have been modeled as a pair of translational and rotational springs and frequency equation of the overall system has been developed using sub-structure synthesis. It is shown that using first few natural frequencies of the system, one can obtain a set of over-determined system of equations involving the unknown stiffness parameters. Method of multi-linear regression is then applied to obtain the best estimate of the unknown stiffness parameters. The estimation procedure has been developed for a two parameter joint stiffness matrix.
