Optimal field synthesis for enhancing the modeling capabilities of reservoir/aquifer fields

  • One field identified by an inverse method is one of multiple candidate solutions those are independently obtained through a specific estimation technique. While averaging of optimized fields can provide a better description of the spatial feature of an unknown field, it deteriorates the flow and transport characteristics of the optimized fields. As a result, the averaged field is not suited for modeling aquifer performances. Based on genetic algorithm, an optimal field synthesis technique is developed, which combines diversely optimized fields into a refined group of fields. Each field in the population is paired, and a sub-region of each field is exchanged by crossover operation to create a group of synthesized fields of enhanced modeling capability. The population of the fields is evolved till the synthesized fields become sufficiently similar. Applications of the optimal field synthesis to synthetic cases indicate that the objective functions of the fields assessing the modeling capabilities are further reduced after the optimal field synthesis. The identified fields from various inverse techniques may yield a range of modeling results under varied flow situations. The uncertainty is narrowed down through the optimal field synthesis and the associated modeling results converge on that of the reference field. The developed inverse modeling facilitates the construction of a reliable simulation model and hence trustworthy predictions of the future performances.

  • This paper presents a method about the modeling of the medium - small diesel engine for the speed control and designs the robust speed control system by the $\mu$-synthesis, which has good performance, in spite of the existence of model uncertainities and the external disturbance. We confirmed the validity of the proposed modeling method and the designed control system by $\mu$-synthesis through the experimental responses.

  • This paper presents a parallel approach of formant synthesis method for haegeum on graphics processing units (GPU) using spectral modeling. Spectral modeling synthesis (SMS) is a technique that models time-varying spectra as a combination of sinusoids and a time-varying filtered noise component. A second-order digital resonator by the impulse-invariant transform (IIT) is applied to generate deterministic components and the results are band-pass filtered to adjust magnitude. The noise is calculated by first generating the sinusoids with formant synthesis, subtracting them from the original sound, and then removing some harmonics remained. The synthesized sounds are consequently by adding sinusoids, which are shown to be similar to the original Haegeum sounds. Furthermore, GPU accelerates the synthesis process enabling- real time music synthesis system development, supporting more sound effect, and multiple musical sound compositions.

  • Although physical modeling synthesis is becoming more and more efficient in rich and natural high-quality sound synthesis, its high computational complexity limits its use in portable devices. This constraint motivated research of single-instruction multiple-data many-core architectures that support the tremendous amount of computations by exploiting massive parallelism inherent in physical modeling synthesis. Since no general consensus has been reached which grain sizes of many-core processors and memories provide the most efficient operation for sound synthesis, design space exploration is conducted for seven processing element (PE) configurations. To find an optimal PE configuration, each PE configuration is evaluated in terms of execution time, area and energy efficiencies. Experimental results show that all PE configurations are satisfied with the system requirements to be implemented in portable devices.

An Effective Parallel Implementation of Sound Synthesis of Guitar using GPU (GPU를 이용한 기타의 음 합성을 위한 효과적인 병렬 구현)

  • This paper proposes an effective parallel implementation of a physical modeling synthesis of guitar on the GPU environment. We used appropriate filter coefficients and adjusted the length of delay line for each open string to generate 44,100 six-polyphonic guitar sounds (E2, A2, D3, G4, B3, E4) by using physical modeling synthesis. In addition, we analyzed the physical modeling synthesis algorithm and observed that we can exploit parallelism inherent in the length of delay line. Thus, we assigned CUDA cores as many as the length of delay line and effectively implemented the physical modeling synthesis using GPU to achieve the highest performance. Experimental results indicated that synthetic guitar sounds using GPU were very similar to the original sounds when we compared their spectra. In addition, GPU achieved 68x and 3x better performance than high-performance TI DSP and CPU, respectively. Furthermore, this paper implemented and evaluated the performance of multi-GPU systems for the physical modeling algorithm.

  • In this research, the automatic synthesis of knowledge models is proposed. which are the basis of the methods using qualitative models adapted widely in fault diagnosis and hazard evaluation of chemical processes. To provide an easy and fast way to construct accurate causal model of the target process, the Role-Behavior modeling method is developed to represent the knowledge of modularized process units. In this modeling method, Fault-Behavior model and Structure-Role model present the relationship of the internal behaviors and faults in the process units and the relationship between process units respectively. Through the multiple modeling techniques, the knowledge is separated into what is independent of process and dependent on process to provide the extensibility and portability in model building, and possibility in the automatic synthesis. By taking advantage of the Role-Behavior Model, an algorithm is proposed to synthesize the plant-wide causal model, Fault-Causality Graph (FCG) from specific Fault-Behavior models of the each unit process, which are derived from generic Fault-Behavior models and Structure-Role model. To validate the proposed modeling method and algorithm, a system for building FCG model is developed on G2, an expert system development tool. Case study such as CSTR with recycle using the developed system showed that the proposed method and algorithm were remarkably effective in synthesizing the causal knowledge models for diagnosis of chemical processes.

  • Faces play a key role in revealing the personalized attributes such as the identity, emotion, health condition, etc. Due to the importance of faces, computer-assisted face modeling and reconstruction have been actively studied both in computer vision and graphics community. Especially, face reconstruction and realistic face synthesis are well-grounded research problems and various approaches have been proposed during the last decade. In this paper, we discuss a wide range of existing work in face modeling by introducing their target applications, categorizing them upon their methodology and addressing their strength and weakness on performance. Finally, we introduce remaining research issues and suggest the future research direction in face modeling. We believe that this paper provides a high-level overview on face modeling techniques and helps understand the major research issues and the trends of methodology.

Formant Synthesis of Haegeum Sounds Using Cepstral Envelope (캡스트럼 포락선을 이용한 해금 소리의 포만트 합성)

  • This paper proposes a formant synthesis method of Haegeum sounds using cepstral envelope for spectral modeling. Spectral modeling synthesis (SMS) is a technique that models time-varying spectra as a combination of sinusoids (the "deterministic" part), and a time-varying filtered noise component (the "stochastic" part). SMS is appropriate for synthesizing sounds of string and wind instruments whose harmonics are evenly distributed over whole frequency band. Formants extracted from cepstral envelope are parameterized for synthesis of sinusoids. A resonator by Impulse Invariant Transform (IIT) is applied to synthesize sinusoids and the results are bandpass filtered to adjust magnitude. The noise is calculated by first generating the sinusoids with formant synthesis, subtracting them from the original sound, and then removing some harmonics remained. Linear interpolation is used to model noise. The synthesized sounds are made by summing sinusoids, which are shown to be similar to the original Haegeum sounds.

  • Ecosystem models are mathematical representations of underlying mechanistic relationships among ecological components and processes. Ecosystem modeling is a useful tool to visualize inherent complexities of ecological relationships among components and the characteristic variability in ecological systems, and to quantitatively predict effects of modification of systems due to human activities and/or climate change. A number of interdisciplinary programs in recent 20 to 30 years motivated oceanographic communities to explore and employ systematic and holistic approaches, and as an outcome of these efforts, synthesis and modeling became a popular and important way of integrating lessons learned from many on-going projects. This is a brief review that includes: background information of ecosystem dynamics model; what needs to be considered in building a model framework; biologically-physically coupled processes; end-to-end modeling efforts; and parameterization and related issues.

  • Realistic facial animation research field which communicates with human and computer using face has increased recently. The human face is the part of the body we use to recognize individuals and the important communication channel that understand the inner states like emotion. To provide the intelligent interface. computer facial animation looks like human in talking and expressing himself. Facial modeling and animation research is focused on realistic facial animation recently. In this article, we suggest the method of facial modeling and animation for realistic facial synthesis. We can make a 3D facial model for arbitrary face by using generic facial model. For more correct and real face, we make the Korean Generic Facial Model. We can also manipulate facial synthesis based on the physical characteristics of real facial muscle and skin. Many application will be developed such as teleconferencing, education, movies etc.
