In this paper, a new control strategy to reduce switching losses in three-phase voltage-source PWM converters is proposed according to Modified-Period-Average-Model (MPAN). The basic concept of this strategy is aimed at calculating the phase control voltages for controlling the source currents to be sinusoidal and in phase with the source voltages, and reducing the number of switching in each period. The phase control voltages of Period-Average-Model(PAM) is obtained according to analyzing the operation of PWM converter. In order to reduce the sensitivity to system parameters in PAM, MPAM is deduced. Then a square wave whose frequency is three times of utility frequency is added to the phase control voltages derived from MPAM. The control strategy reduces the switching losses since there exists about one-third blanking time for every phase in one period. The theoretical derivation and the control strategy are experimentally verified on a 2.5 kW three-phase voltage source converter.
In this paper, Operation characteristics of the active clamp(ACL) zero-voltage-switching(ZVS) forward converter(FC) and active clamp hard- switching(HS) forward converter are compared with respect to loss analysis. The losses of semiconductor (including conduction losses and switching losses), transformer(containing the core loss and copper loss) and parasitic element of passive element (capacitor, inductor) are measured and compared for each type. For an experiment we have built 50W ACL ZVS-FC and ACL HS-FC, in which the switching frequency is 200kHz, and test it. The experimental results show that both types of operation have nearly same characteristics.

This paper presents a comparison of core losses for the four cases of Switched Reluctance Motors (SRM) with different winding method and switching sequence. With concentrated winding SRM, two kinds of switching sequence are considered for one-phase exciting and two-phase simultaneously exciting driving. With both distributed winding and toroidal winding, two-phase exciting driving is considered. The ratio of calculated core losses to input power is able to be used a guide or reference for deciding the winding method and switching sequence of in the initial design stage of SRM.

In this paper, an interleaved soft switching boost converter for a Photovoltaic Power Conditioning System (PV-PCS) with high efficiency is proposed. In order to raise the efficiency of the proposed converter, a 2-phase interleaved boost converter integrated with soft switching cells is used. All of the switching devices in the proposed converter achieve zero current switching (ZCS) or zero voltage switching (ZVS). Thus, the proposed circuit has a high efficiency characteristic due to low switching losses. To analyze the power losses of the proposed converter, two experimental sets have been built. One consists of normal devices (MOSFETs, Fast Recovery (FR) diodes) and the other consists of advanced power devices (CoolMOSs, SiC-Schottky Barrier Diodes (SBDs)). To verify the validity of the proposed topology, theoretical analysis and experimental results are presented.
This paper proposes a circuit technique that reduces losses cauased by reverse-recovery characteristics of the diode in converters. In high voltage, high power, Reverse recovery characteristics of the diode gives large stresses to switching devices. To solve the problem, we propose a circuit with active snubber between diode and switch. By controling di/dt rate of thr diode, the proposed technique reduces the losses and the stresses of switching devices.

A new soft switching boost converter is proposed in this paper. The conventional boost converter generates switching losses at turn on and off. Because of that, the whole system efficiency is reduced. The proposed converter utilizes soft switching method using an auxiliary switch and resonant circuit. Thus, the converter reduces switching losses lower than ones of hard switching method. The proposed soft switching boost converter can be applied to photovoltaic system, power factor correction circuit and so on.

A matrix converter is used for converting AC/AC power directly. In order to generate sinusoidal input/output waveform in matrix converter, it uses nine bidirectional switches and PWM modulation. This paper presents an analytical averaged loss model of matrix converter with DDPWM(direct duty ratio PWM) and proposes a new switching method for reducing switching losses. A Mathematical loss models with average magnitude of voltage/current are classed as conduction and switching loss. The proposed switching pattern is improved with existing DDPWM. To prove improved efficiency with proposed DDPWM, this paper compares losses between suggested switching pattern and conventional switching pattern using mathematical and simulation method. Each loss types are influenced by environmental factors such as temperature, switching frequency, output current and modulation method.
Due to high power ratings and low conduction loss, the IGBT has become more attractive in high power applications. However, its slower characteristics than those of MOSFET cause severe switching losses and switching frequency limitation. This paper proposes the IGBT's soft switching concept with the help of MOSFET, where each of the IGBT and MOSFET plays its role during on-periods and switching instants. Also, the switching losses are analyzed by using the linearized modeling and the modeling and the operations of a converter are investigated to confirm the soft switching of IGBT's.

A high efficiency soft switching boost converter is proposed in this paper. The conventional boost converter generates switching losses at turn on and off. Because of those, the whole system efficiency is reduced. The proposed converter utilizes soft switching method using resonant circuit with an auxiliary switch. Therefore, the proposed converter reduces switching losses lower than the hard switching. The proposed soft switching boost converter can be applied to photovoltaic system, power factor correction circuit and etc.
In this paper, a new passive lossless snubber circuit with energy transfer capability is proposed. The proposed lossless snubber circuit provides Zero-Current Switching (ZCS) condition for turn-on instants and Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) condition for turn-off instants. In addition, its diodes operate under soft switching condition. Therefore, no significant switching losses occur in the converter. Since the energy of the snubber circuit is transferred to the output, there are no significant conduction losses. The proposed snubber circuit can be applied on isolated and non-isolated converters. To verify the operation of the snubber circuit, a boost converter using the proposed snubber is implemented at 70W. Also, the measured conducted Efficiency Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) of the proposed boost converter and conventional ones are presented which show the effects of proposed snubber on EMI reduction. The experimental results confirm the presented theoretical analysis.
