  • This study compared the levels of North Dakota and South Korean conventional and sustainable farmers' participation in community organizations. The North Dakota data were collected in 1990 from a sample of 568 farm and ranch operators. and the South Korean data were collected in late 1999 and early 2000 from a sample of 147 farmers through interviews and surveys. The data were analyzed using the SPSS ANOV A computer program. The sustainable farmers in both countries were more likely to participate in community organizations than the conventional farmers. Nevertheless, through this comparative study it was found that some differences between two countries exist due to their different cultural backgrounds. Whereas Americans were oriented more to morality and ethics influenced by church, farmers in Korean were more influenced by civil movements. Whereas the reduced tillage farmers in Americans were more likely to be sustainable farmers, the mixed farmers in Korea were more likely to belong to conventional farmers. While individuals in community organizations focused on the economics of agriculture, sustainable farming and farmers' social participation were social matters, which were used to develop sustainable community.

For this, it is needed to identify the practical meaning of community spaces for elderly residents. In many cases, existing apartments' community spaces have been designed without considering the elderly. In order to develop successful environment for aging society, it is necessary for us to precisely review how elderly residents are changing their needs. Survey and depth-interview methods were used for data collection of this study. This study was performed in the five subject apartments located in Haeundae new town, Busan. In planning of community spaces for sustainable apartment complex in the aging society, 1) The population of the elderly in apartment complex has been increased with progress of the aging society, and it has been necessary to enlarge and consider the aging-friendly community space. 2) When the community space is located in a good accessibility, visual openness, multipurpose composition and the center of complex, it was investigated that the degree of its usage was high. 3) Common apartment complex for the elderly was deficient, and the composition and the layout of community spaces were needed, which included sports facility, spaces for leisure culture and study. This study could be utilized as basic data for designing community spaces in apartments from the perspective of sustainable community.

  • The Catba national park (20$\circ$42'-20$\circ$54'N, 106$\circ$54'-107$\circ$09'E), which is a representative protected area in northeast Vietnam, was first investigated in terms of phytosociology of the Zurich-Montpellier School. 15 plant communities were identified from the seven vegetation types: Teetaria-Amoora gigantea community, Blechmum-Pitecellobium ferrugineum community, Impatiens-Dracaena cambodiana community, Rhizophora apiculata community, Avicenia marina community, Panicum repens community, Heterosmilax-Zanthoxylum nitidum community, Stachytarphyta jamaiensis-Bidens bipinnata community, microstegium vagans community, Dicranopteris linearis community, Randina-Sapium sebiferum community, Psidium gujava community, Elephantopus scaber community, and chirita aratformis community. Traditional pasturing and shifting agrie\culture by indigenous people in Catba national park were recognized as main disturbance regies, which have been far above sustainable levels. Ecological strategies for conservation and sustainable use on national park' ecosystem were proposed: (1) development of awareness program on sustainable life style of indigenous people, (2) establishment of multiple use module system of national park, (3) ecosystem monitoring of permanent ecological sites.
