  • The use of hydrodynamic separator is becoming increasingly popular for suspended solids reduction in urban storm runoff. This study is a laboratory investigation of the use of Vortex Screen to reduce the solids concentration of synthesized storm runoff. The synthesized storm runoff was made with water and addition of particles; manhole sediment, road sediment, fly ash, and ployvinyl chloride powder. Vortex Screen was made of acryl resin with 250 mm of diameter and height of 700 mm. To determine the removal efficiency for various influent concentrations of suspended solids (SS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), tests were performed with different operational conditions. The samples were taken simultaneously at the influent storage tank and effluent tank, and measured SS and COD concentrations. The ranges of surface loading rate were 110 to 1,550 $m^3/m^2$/day, and influent SS concentrations were varied from 141 to 1,986 mg/L. This paper was intended to evaluate the effect of inlet baffle and the ratio of underflow to overflow ($Q_U/Q_O$) on particle separation efficiency for various particle size using Vortex Screen. It was found that when increase of $Q_U/Q_O$ from 10% to 20%, SS removal efficiency was increased about 6%. The range of SS and COD removal efficiencies of road sediment particle size 125<$d_p$<300 ${\mu}m$ were 68.0~81.0%, 53.1~71.9%, respectively. Results showed that SS removal efficiency with inlet baffle improved by about 10~20% compared without inlet baffle.

  • The relationship between SPM (Suspended Particulate Matter) and fungal spore in the air was investigated in Seosan, a rural county of Korea, in spring of 2000. SPM concentrations in the air were $199.8\mu{g}\;m^{-3}$, in the 1st Yellow Sand Period (March, 23-24), $249.4\mu{g}\;m^{-3}$ in the 2nd Yellow Sand Period (April, 7-9) and $98.9\mu{g}\;m^{-3}$ in the Non Yellow Sand Period (May, 12-16), respectively. Although there was somewhat difference in total SPM concentration between the two Yellow Sand Periods, majority of the total SPM were composed of $5\mu{m}$ sized coarse particles over the two periods. However, fine particles sized about $1\mu{m}$and coarse particles sized about $5-6\mu{m}$ ultimately showed peaks, which was within typical bimodal pattern at the graph of SPM size distribution in the Non Yellow Sand Period. Four mold genera grown from airborne fungal spores were finally identified in full-grown colonies at the SPM samples during the Yellow Sand Periods. These genera were Fusarium, Aspergillus, Penicillium and Basipetospora.

  • The problem of non-ideal detonation propagation velocities in heterogeneous hybrid mixtures is studied in the case of a high explosive with suspended fine aluminum (Al) particles. Since there exist difference in the time scales of the characteristic induction and combustion of High Explosives and solid particles, the process of energy release behind the leading shock front occurs over an extended period of time. The problem is analyzed by the theory of the mechanics of multiphase media with mass, momentum and heat exchanges between particles and gases. The numerical results match the available experimental results of heavily aluminized (5~25% Al weight) HMX explosive obtained previously.

  • The purpose of this study is to simulate the transport of nonuniform sediment considering the hiding-exposure effect numerically. In order to calculate the transport of multi-disperse suspended sediment mixtures, the set of advection-diffusion equations for each particle class is solved. The applicability of the numerical model is examined by comparing the simulation results with experimental data. In this study, we calculate the vertical distribution of total concentration of sediment particles using two approaches: (1) by considering the mixture as represented by a single size; and (2) by combining the concentration of the sediment corresponding to several particle size classes; From the simulation results, it is shown that both approaches calculate reasonable results due to the narrow range of size distribution. Under the condition of nonuniform sediment, the critical shear stress of the sediment particle is influenced by the size-selective entrainment, i.e., hiding-exposure effect. It is shown in this study that the effect of hiding-exposure effect on the erosion rates of fine sand is negligibly small.

  • Anchored measurements (12.5 hr) of suspended sediment concentration and other hydrodynamic parameters were carried out at two stations located at the entrance to Hampyung Bay in summer (August 1999). Tidal variations in water temperature and salinity were in the range of 26.0-27.9$^{\circ}C$ and 30.9-31.5, respectively, indicating exchange offshore and offshore water mass. Active tidal mixing processes at the entrance appear to destroy the otherwise vertical stratification in temperature and salinity in spite of strong solar heating in summer. On the contrary, suspended sediment concentrations show a marked stratification with increasing concentrations toward bottom layer. Clastic particles in suspended sediments consist mostly of very fine to fine silt (4-16 ${\mu}$m) with a poorly-sorted value of 14.7-25.9 ${\mu}$m. However, at slack time with less turbulent energy, flocs larger than 40 ${\mu}$m are formed by cohesion and inter-collision of particles, resulting in a higher settling velocity. Strong ebb-dominated and weak flood dominated tidal currents, in the southwestern and the northeastern part, respectively, result in a seaward residual flow of -10${\sim}$-20 cm $s^{-1}$ at station H1 and a bayward residual flow less than 5.0 cm $s^{-1}$ at station H2. However, mean concentration of suspended sediments at station H1 is higher at flood (95.0-144.1 mg $1^{-1}$) than in ebb (75.8-120.9 mg $1^{-1}$). On the contrary, at the station H2, the trend is reversed with higher concentration at the ebb (84.7-158.4 mg $1^{-1}$) than that at the flood (53.0-107.9 mg $1^{-1}$). As a result, seaward net suspended sediment fluxes ($f_{s}$) are calculated to be -1.7 ${\sim}$-$15.610^{3}$ kg $m^{-2}$ $s^{-1}$ through the whole water column. However, the stations H1 and H2 show definitely different values of the flux with higher ones in the former than in the latter. Alternatively, depth-integrated net suspended sediment loads ($\c{Q}_{s}$) for one tidal cycle are also toward the offshore with ranges of 0.37${\times}$$10^{3}$ kg $m^{-1}$ and 0.21${\times}$$10^{3}$ kg $m^{-1}$, at station H1 and H2, respectively. This seaward transport of suspended sediment in summer suggests that summer-time erosion in the Hampyung muddy tidal flats is a rather exceptional phenomenon compared to the general deposition reported for many other tidal flats on the west coast of Korea.

  • Due to rapid industrialization and economic development since 1970's, Seoul has become known as one of the most heavily polluted cities in the world. This is especially because of its air pollution. This study was conducted to characterize the cancer risk from organic pollutants in the suspended particulates of Seoul. Extractable organic matter (EOM) and PAHs in Shinchon, a major traffic area, were measured monthly in two periods of Aug. $1987{\sim}sep.$ 1988, and Sep. $1990{\sim}Aug.$ 1991. While the differences both of EOM and benzo(a)pyrene concentrations between these two periods were not significant (P>0.05), the differences between heating and non-heating seasons were significant (p<0.01). The estimated mean concentrations of EOM and benzo(a)pyrene in fine particles in non-heating season were $3.98{\mu}g/m^3\;and\;0.51ng/m^3$ respectively, and in heating season were $6.75{\mu}g/m^3\;and\;2.96ng/m^3$ respectively, in these two periods combined. The calculated risk from EOM was compared with that from benzo(a)pyrene and also these values were compared with the level of acceptable risk.

  • The radioisotope labelling study was carried out for the sediment transport investigation. The fate of suspended solid materials is deeply related to the harbour siltation and the shoreline deformation that take place as a result of the artificial development of coastal area. In the experiment, $^{99m}TcO_4{^-}$ was chemically reduced and labelled in such a way that the labelled particles have the similar settling characteristics with the natural sediment. The radioisotope labelling techniques can be widely used for the natural resource exploration where the hydraulic dynamics of underground water and surface water are of importance.

  • In this study, the concentration of fine indoor dust and the size distribution of fine indoor dust were analyzed by measuring the dust generated during the cleaning process of an indoor office. We measured $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$, and $PM_{1.0}$ and analyzed the size distributions of dust larger than $0.3{\mu}m$ in diameter during cleaning. The results showed that the concentration of $PM_{10}$ increased rapidly during cleaning, however $PM_{1.0}$ did not increase. Before cleaning with a broom, the fine dust concentration was about $50{\mu}g/m^3$, but increased to about $400{\mu}g/m^3$ as cleaning progressed. In the case of indoor cleaning with a vacuum cleaner, the concentration of $PM_{10}$ increased during the cleaning process and the increase of $PM_{2.5}$ was relatively small. $PM_{1.0}$ did not increase as in the case of cleaning the broom.

  • The stormwater runoff from the increasing paved roads and vehicles resulted in the increase in the pollutants load to adjacent water bodies. The granular media filtration facilities are the most widely adopted to minimize the non-point source pollution from motorways. It is essential to consider the severe variation of hydraulic condition, suspended solid (SS) characteristics, and the medium characteristics for stormwater management filter. In this study, different types of media, including sand, were tested and the performance of downflow sand filters was investigated under various linear velocity and influent solid particle size. Results showed that the best medium is the coarse sand with large grain size, which showed the specific SS removal before clogging of more than $8.498kg/m^2$, the SS removal of higher than 95%, and minimum head loss. Linear velocity did not affect the total solid removal, while the performance was improved when fine solid was introduced. It is suggested that the life of a downflow sand filter bed can be extended by deep bed filtration when influent particles are fine. However, the captured particles can be washed out after a long period of operation.

  • Objectives: With the growth of national interest in fine particulate matter, many complaints about pollutants emitted from air pollution emitting facilities have arisen in recent years. In particular, it is thought that a large volume of particulate pollutants are discharged from workplaces that use Solid Refuse Fuel (SRF). Therefore, particulate contaminants generated from SRF were measured and analyzed in this study in terms of respective particle sizes. Methods: In this study, particulate matter in exhaust gas was measured by applying US EPA method 201a using a cyclone. This method measures Filterable Particulate Matter (FPM), and does not consider the Condensable Particulate Matter (CPM) that forms particles in the atmosphere after being discharged as a gas in the exhaust gas. Results: The mass concentration of Total Suspended Particles (TSP) in the four SRF-using facilities was 1.16 to 11.21 mg/Sm3, indicating a very large concentration deviation of about 10 times. When the fuel input method was the continuous injection type, particulate matter larger than 10 ㎛ diameter showed the highest particle size fraction, followed by particulate matter smaller than 10 ㎛ and larger than 2.5 ㎛, and particulate matter of 2.5 ㎛ or less. Contrary to the continuous injection type, the batch injection type had the smallest particle size fraction of particulate matter larger than 10 ㎛. The overall particulate matter decreased as the operating load factor decreased from 100% to 60% at the batch input type D plant. In addition, as incomplete combustion significantly decreased, the particle size fraction also changed significantly. Both TSP and heavy metals (six items) satisfied the emissions standards. The measured value of the emission factor was 38-99% smaller than the existing emissions factor. Conclusions: In the batch injection facility, the particulate matter decreased as the operating load factor decreased, as did the particle size fraction of the particulate matter. These results will help the selection of effective methods such as reducing the operating load factor instead of adjusting the operating time during emergency reduction measures.
