  • Based on our experience on exoplanet transit observation, we propose the exoplanet science cases with Small Telescope Network. One is the follow-up observation for validation of exoplanet candidates. TESS(Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) is pouring out exoplanet candidates in bright stars(V<15) on all the sky. Since Small Telescope Network will consist of 0.5-1m telescopes, we will expect to produce promising outcomes from the follow-up observation of bright candidates. Next is the transit time observation. By spectroscopy of space and large telescopes during transit event, it can be possible to find the bio signatures in exoplanet atmosphere. So, in terms of cost, it is critical to determine the exact time of transit event. In addition, detecting the variation of transit time can reveal another exoplanet and exomoon in the system. In order to determine the transit time and its variation, the accumulation of transit event data is more important than the quality of photometric data. We expect that it can be a challenging project of Small Telescope Network.

  • Surveys for visitor's awareness and on-the-spot investigations at Odae Mountain National Park were conducted for activation of nature interpretation. As a result, many problems on observation trails as the object of the nature interpretation were identified. The nature interpretation is not functioning fully for the side of environmental education. The situation and problems of nature interpretation were analyzed in depth based on the survey of the visitors. In order to improve roles of the nature observation trails and solve the present problems immediately, suggestions are as the followings. I) Road resurfacing and space development needed to solve the problems of existing nature observation trail. 2) Public relations for nature observation trail and production of signboards promoting visitor's interest. 3) Development of nature observation trail used only for nature interpretation 4) Development of adequate Korean interpretation program based on systematic nature interpretation models from other developed countries

  • Hand-washing is one of the most important factors in infection control and in preventing cross-contamination. The objective of this study was to investigate female university students' awareness of hand-washing, their hand washing practices, and the difference between their awareness and practices. A self-administered questionnaire survey and direct observation in restrooms were separately carried out in a university campus and over four weeks' period. A total of 97.4% of the survey respondents claimed to wash their hands after using toilet, and 98.2% of the observed students actually did so according to the unnoticed observational study. However, only 6.3% of the students who washed their hands in the direct observation washed for more than 10 seconds, although 46.4% of respondents in the survey reported that they usually wash their hands for more than 10 seconds. Among the observed students who washed their hands, only 0.9% used soap, and 0.9% washed four parts of their hands. Paper towel was the most common hand-drying method in the direct observation and also in the survey. Significant differences were found in duration, use of soap, part of washing, and hand-drying method between the questionnaire survey and the direct observation (p<0.05). This study indicates that there is a noticeable difference between the awareness of hand-washing and hand-washing practices among female university students. Further research should examine hand-washing practices of female university students in restrooms outside the university campus.

  • In modern society, human and social damages caused by natural disasters and frequent disaster accidents have been increased year by year. Prompt access to dangerous disaster sites that are inaccessible or inaccessible using state-of-the-art Earth observation equipment such as satellites, drones, and survey robots, and timely collection and analysis of meaningful disaster information. It can play an important role in protecting people's property and life throughout the entire disaster management cycle, such as responding to disaster sites and establishing mid-to long-term recovery plans. This special issue introduces the National Disaster Management Research Institute (NDMI)'s disaster management technology that utilizes various Earth observation platforms, such as mobile survey vehicles equipped with close-range disaster site survey sensors, drones, and survey robots, as well as satellite technology, which is a tool of remote earth observation. Major research achievements include detection of damage from water disasters using Google Earth Engine, mid- and long-term time series observation, detection of reservoir water bodies using Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images and artificial intelligence, analysis of resident movement patterns in case of forest fire disasters, and data analysis of disaster safety research. Efficient integrated management and utilization plan research results are summarized. In addition, research results on scientific investigation activities on the causes of disasters using drones and survey robots during the investigation of inaccessible and dangerous disaster sites were described.

  • We introduce Korean involvement in the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope Project and activities organized by a group of Korean astronomers as LSST Korea. The Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute plans to sign a memorandum of agreement with Large Synoptic Survey Telescope Corporation this year. Although the project will start its commissioning observation around 2020, Korean preparation for the LSST era should be initiated now because of an unprecedented amount of data produced in the LSST. We explain current status of our efforts for the LSST Korea.

  • Recently, the frequency and scale of natural disasters such as typhoons, flood, earthquakes, and tidal waves from earthquakes has been increasing. Several nations have recognized that earth observation is essential for protecting the Earth's environment. However, as the data format from earth observation varies depending on areas, institutes, and countries, sharing and exchange between data is difficult. Thus, we have a metadata standardization scheme suitable for the domestic situation to allow exchange of data between societal benefit areas with reference to principles of data sharing and exchange that are discussed on GEO (Group on Earth Observation). We have also designed metadata schemes required to identify the metadata situation of earth observation data being used for 9 societal benefit areas of GEOSS(Global Earth Observation System of Systems).

  • The goal of this survey is to propose planning and design informations for the public open spaces in apartment housing, through the observation and analysis of the current situations. For this, the planning information of housing suppliers about public open spaces and the spatial utilization of users were compared and by analyzing facility utilization and resident\`s recognition. This study is also intended to guide the future directions of the research for the improvement of public open spaces. The research follows three phases; \circled1 To understand the conditions of public open spaces in apartment housing sites through survey and analysis of catalogues and references. \circled2 To study on facility utilization and resident's recognition by observation and analysis. \circled3 To propose planning guidelines for the improvement of public open space by recognition differences of facilities.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the effect of an explicit word instruction for EFL beginning readers and their perception on the learning experience. Data were attained from 16 fourth graders who took English class as a development activity. Data include the results of pre- and post-test of high frequency sight word recognition, oral reading ability, students' survey responses, and teacher observation. The descriptive statistics were obtained for the result of the pre- and post-test. The findings from the student survey and teacher observation were also provided and interpreted to better understand the result of project and students' perception on the learning experience. The followings are the results of this study. The word recognition ability of the students was dramatically improved after the project. The students were satisfied with the overall learning experience perceiving it as helpful and fun learning. They expressed that the explicit word instruction helped their word recognition and reading ability. The results also supported that the confidence of students on their reading ability were heightened. Several suggestions are made for teachers and researchers on the word instruction for young EFL learners who are beginning readers.
