  • The purpose of this study is to understand the meanings of formative methods (re-creative expressions, abstractive expressions, conceptual expressions, and adaptive expressions) as they are adapted to fashion design. Re-creative expression is the representation of real objects from nature or the environment, sometimes in a humorous or surrealistic way. Abstractive expression is the use of reconstructed forms extracted from the basic characteristics of natural things, which take on variety of appearances based on the designer’'s creativity and imagination. Conceptual expression refers to the representation of ideas, concepts, and other products of the human mind. And, adaptive expression is a method of design that is focused on function driving the form of clothing. Modern fashion design is a fluid hybrid of these various types of expression that serves as an extension of the designers’' aesthetic values.

  • Animation documentary is a hybrid genre that is newly highlighted with opposite properties. The actual world is reproduced with an unrealistic method in documentary aspect, but the objectivity of documentaries cannot be guaranteed as the boundary of actual pictures and digital images has become ambiguous. As the animation documentary by Ari Folman succeeded in 2008, the focus of this study is on 'how can fictional animations prove the authenticity of documentaries?' in which the study is mainly conducted in documentary aspect. For this, the researcher considers visual style research has important role in understanding and developing a new video genre, and asserts the necessity of research on reproduction image that is produced by the characteristics of animation which is produced in frame units. This paper has contents on the visual style of animation documentaries with pictorial reproduction methods in which animation images were classified into 3 styles based on previous research on animation documentary style. Visual styles are classified into actual image that is based on similarity with reality to deliver objective facts, image that is transformed through emphasis and omission which are factors of animations, and surrealistic image that reproduces non-visual regions such as illusions and the inner side of characters. Through this study that analyzes visual style types and characteristics, animation documentaries are expected to position as a hybrid genre that illustrates reality with a new method instead of being included in the existing reproduction method of documentaries.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of current fashion illustrations within the framework of Multi-space method. Multi-space means being piled up one moment & space on others, and being amassed in a scene. This method is related with Dadaism, Surrealism and Postmodernism, and also influences on the current fashion illustration. In this study, the types of Multi-space method could be classified into 4 types; Repetitive Time Mixture in Multi-space, Juxtaposed Time Mixture in Multi-space, Reiterated Space Mixture in Multi-space, Projected Space Mixture in Multi-space. The characteristics of Multi-space were analyzed and the results are as followed. The distinctive methods for Time Mixture in Multi-space are repetition and juxtaposition in a scene. Time Mixture in Multi-space can make the nonlinear narration and unreal illusory space in fashion illustrations more effectively. Reiterated Space Mixture in Multi-space can be related with the heterogeneous, surrealistic illusions in current fashion illustrations. Projected Space Mixture in Multi-space can be characterized into inter-penetration. It can derive spectators to mix the projected & transparent images in a scene for their own imaginary stories. The final imagination can be made differently according to the personal experiences of spectators.

  • This paper aims at researching the cave concept of the Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori and the result could be summarised as follows. First, a cave is Fujimori's only theme related to the interior space. He set some design guidelines for practice concerning openings of the wall and finishing materials of the interior, following the two major characteristics of a cave: 'comfortability' and 'homogeneity in material'. And 'fire' was also the premise in the cave as a 'spirit' of the space. Second, Fujimori applied the concrete guidelines to Tanpopo House (1994~95), which had in fact borne the ideas. Yakisugi House (2005~07) that took the cave as its design theme showed the transition of his cave concept, from closedness to openness. Third, though his cave concept might deserve the criticism that it is inclined to 'image' rather than 'essence', it illustrates that he seeks after an archetype of human dwelling before the purity of the original space was tarnished with rationality and abstraction. And the cave idea allows the seemingly contradictory 'sachlich' and 'surrealistic' features to coexist. Summing up, Fujimori's cave concept proves that his architecture is a rejection of the Cartesian modernist ideal and the contemporary architects' desire for dematerialisation. In a fundamental level, however, it is a result of his strategic choice induced by his own primary principle that his building must not be similar to any styles in history or any other architects' works in the world.
