  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to investigate the shear bond strength of luting cements used with implant retained restorations on to titanium specimens after different surface treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS. One hundred twenty disc shaped specimens were used. They were divided into three groups considering the surface treatments (no treatment, sandblasting, and oxygen plasma treatment). Water contact angle of specimens were determined. The specimens were further divided into four subgroups (n=10) according to applied cement types: polycarboxylate cement (Adhesor Carbofine-AC), temporary zinc oxide free cement (Temporary CementZOC), non eugenol provisional cement for implant retained prosthesis (Premier Implant Cement-PI), and non eugenol acrylic-urethane polymer based provisional cement for implant luting (Cem Implant Cement-CI). Shear bond strength values were evaluated. Two-way ANOVA test and Regression analysis were used to statistical analyze the results. RESULTS. Overall shear bond strength values of luting cements defined in sandblasting groups were considerably higher than other surfaces (P<.05). The cements can be ranked as AC > CI > PI > ZOC according to shear bond strength values for all surface treatment groups (P<.05). Water contact angles of surface treatments (control, sandblasting, and plasma treatment group) were 76.17° ± 3.99, 110.45° ± 1.41, and 73.80° ± 4.79, respectively. Regression analysis revealed that correlation between the contact angle of different surfaces and shear bond strength was not strong (P>.05). CONCLUSION. The retentive strength findings of all luting cements were higher in sandblasting and oxygen plasma groups than in control groups. Oxygen plasma treatment can improve the adhesion ability of titanium surfaces without any mechanical damage to titanium structure.

  • Low-cost and large-scale fabrication method of nanohole array, which comprises nanoscale voids separated by a few tens to a few hundreds of nanometers, has opened up new possibilities in biomolecular sensing as well as novel frontier optical devices. One of the key aspects of the nanohole array research is how to control the hole size following each specific needs of the hole structure. Here, we report the extensive study on the fine control of the hole size within the range of 500-2500 nm via surface-catalyzed chemical deposition. The initial hole structures were prepared via conventional photo-lithography, and the hole size was decreased to a designed value through the surface-catalyzed chemical reduction of the gold ion on the predefined hole surfaces, by simple dipping of the hole array device into the aqueous solution of gold chloride and hydroxylamine. The final hole size was controlled by adjusting reaction time, and the optimal experimental condition was obtained by doing a series of characterization experiments. The characterization of size-controlled hole array was systematically examined on the image results of optical microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM), atomic-force microscopy(AFM), and total internal reflection microscopy.

  • This paper addresses two interrelated problems concerning the tracking control of pod propulsion unmanned surface vessel (USV), namely, the modeling of pod propulsion USV, and tracking controller design. First, based on MMG modeling theory, the model of pod propulsion USV is derived. Furthermore, a practical adaptive neural tracking controller is proposed by backstepping technique, neural network approximation and adaptive method. Meanwhile, unlike some existing tracking methods for surface vessel whose control algorithms suffer from "explosion of complexity", a novel neural shunting model is introduced to solve the problem. Using a Lyapunov functional, it is proven that all error signals in the system are uniformly ultimately bounded. The advantages of the paper are that first, the underactuated characteristic of pod propulsion USV is proved; second, the neural shunting model is used to solve the problem of "explosion of complexity", and this is a combination of knowledge in the field of biology and engineering; third, the developed controller is able to capture the uncertainties without the exact information of hydrodynamic damping structure and the sea disturbances. Numerical examples have been given to illustrate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • The effect of nonlinear friction in the low velocity is dominant in precise controlled mechanisms and it is difficult to model. This paper is concerned with the compensation for friction using the variable structure system approach as nonmodel based method. The problem of chattering in the sliding mode controller is suppressed by the implementation of the boundary layer concept. And the estimation for friction using sliding mode observer makes the upper bound of matched uncertainty reduced. Accordingly, the effect of chattering can be more suppressed. And the sliding surface is constructed by adding an integral component to the switching function that is made by using error dynamics. This sliding surface guarantees the good tracking performance. Experimental results for a XY table system show that the proposed method has a good performance especially in the low velocity.

  • This paper presents techniques to harvest higher voltage from piezoelectric cantilever energy harvester by structural alteration. Three different energy harvesting structures are considered namely, stepped cantilever beam, stepped cantilever beam with rectangular and trapezoidal cavity. The analytical model of three energy harvesting structures are developed using Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. The thickness, position of the rectangular cavity and the taper angle of the trapezoidal cavity is found to shift the neutral axis away from the surface of the piezoelectric element which in turn increases the generated voltage. The performance of the energy harvesters is evaluated experimentally and is compared with regular piezoelectric cantilever energy harvester. The analytical and experimental investigations reveal that, the proposed energy harvesting structures generate higher output voltage as compared to the regular piezoelectric cantilever energy harvesting structure. This work suggests that through simple structural modifications higher energy can be harvested from the widely reported piezoelectric cantilever energy harvester.

  • The usual methods for the temperature control of mass-concrete structures include the use of low-heat cement, pre-cooling, post-cooling, or sheet curing. In order to control the heat of hydration during the construction of mass-concrete structures, the combination of the above methods is commonly employed. For the construction of mass-concrete structures such as massive pier or anchor, it is necessary to control the curing temperature with pipe cooling. In this study, the method of analysis on the effect of pipe of was proposed to prevent the thermal cracking due to heat of hydration In addition the effect of covering the concrete surface with blanket insulation was investigated. The results of the present study may be useful for the prediction of curing temperature of mass-concrete structures and the reasonable construction management.

  • A discrete sliding mode control (SMC) method based on hybrid model of neural network and nominal model is proposed to reduce the vibration of flexible structures, which is a robust active controller developed by using a sliding manifold approach. Since the thick boundary layer will reduce the virtue of SMC, the multilayer feed-forward neural network is adopted to model the uncertainty part. The neural network is trained by Levenberg-Marquardt backpropagation. The design objective of the sliding mode surface is based on the quadratic optimal cost function. In course of running, the input signal of SMC come from the hybrid model of the nominal model and the neural network. The simulation shows that the proposed control scheme is very effective for large uncertainty systems.

  • Many active and passive flow control methods have been studied since decades, but there are only few works about flow control methods using ion wind. This paper presents an experimental study on the wake control behind a circular cylinder using ion wind, a bulk motion of neutral molecules driven by locally ionized air of corona discharge. Experiments are done f3r different electrohydrodynamic numbers - the ratio of an electrical body farce to a fluid Inertial force - from 0 to 2 and for the Reynolds number ranging from $4{\times}10^3\;to\;8{\times}10^3$. Pressure distributions over a cylinder surface are measured and flow visualizations are carried out by smoke wire method. Flow visualizations confirm that ion wind affects significantly the wake structure behind a circular cylinder and pressure drag could be dramatically reduced by the superimposing ion wind.

  • Among durability tests, the accelerated durability test has been widely used to evaluate the durability of vehicle structure and chassis pans in a shon period of time on the designed road which has severe surface conditions. However it increases the drivers fatigue mainly caused by the severe driving conditions. The drivers difficulty of maintaining constant speed and controlling the steering wheel reduces the reliability of test results. The durability test includes the position and distance sensing system for the recognition of the absolute and relative driving position, the driving control system for the control of whole driving circumstance, the emergency system for responding to system errors. AGVDS (Autonomous Guided Vehicle Driving System) was Proved to facilitate the development of now car projects. Therefore the AGVDS we propose will help make the fundamentals for all future traffic systems.
