  • A robust position control system for a BLDC motor using new sliding mode control strategy is presented. Using the new variable structure system, reaching phase problem is eliminated and transient response is largely improved by design of nonlinear sliding surface. The design of the sliding mode position controller is robust in motor parameter, load variations and disturbance. Experiment results show that the proposed approach can achieve accurate position motor tracking in face of large parameter variations and external disturbances, such as a robot arm, etc.

  • In this note, a complete proof of Utkin's theorem is presented for SI(single input) uncertain nonlinear systems. The invariance theorem with respect to the two nonlinear transformation methods so called the two diagonalization methods is proved clearly, comparatively, and completely for SI uncertain nonlinear systems. With respect to the sliding surface and control input transformations, the equation of the sliding mode i.e., the sliding surface is invariant, which is proved completely. Through an illustrative example and simulation study, the usefulness of the main results is verified. By means of the two nonlinear transformation methods, the same results can be obtained.

  • In this paper we consider the variable structure control for a class of discrete-time uncertain multivariable systems where the nominal system is linear. Discrete-time switching dynamics are introduced so that a new type of state trajectories called sliding mode may exist on the sliding surface by state feedback. The quantitative analysis for the matched uncertainties will show that every response of the system with the proposed switching dynamics is bounded within small neighborhoods of the state-space origin. Also, by the similarity transformation it will be shown that the eigenvalues of the closed-loop systems are composed of those of the subsystems which govern the range-space dynamics and null-space dynamics. It will be also shown that ideal sliding mode can be obtained in the absence of uncertainties due to one-step attraction to the sliding surface regardless of initial position of states. • An experimental research has been carried out for flow control of the shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interaction utilizing aeroelastic mesoflaps. Various shapes and thicknesses of the mesoflap are tested to achieve different deflections of the flap, and ail the results are compared to the solid-wall reference case without flow-control mechanism. Quantitative variation of skin friction has been measured downstream of the interactions using the laser interferometer skin friction meter, and qualitative skin friction distribution has been obtained by observing the interference fringe pattern on the oil-film surface. A strong spanwise variation in the fringe patterns with a narrow region of separation near the centerline is noticed to form behind the shock structure, which phenomenon is presumed partially related to three-dimensional flow structures associated with both the sidewalls and the bottom test surface. The effect of the shape of the cavity is also observed and it is noticed that the shape of the cavity is not negligible.

  • In this paper, a model-based stick-slip compensation for the micro-positioning is proposed using an enhanced stick-slip model based on statistical rough surface contact model. The smart structure is comprised with PZT (lead (Pb) zirconia (Zr) Titanate (Ti)) based stack actuator incorporating with the PID (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) control algorithm, mechanical displacement amplifier and positioning devices. For the stick-slip compensation, the elastic-plastic static friction model is used considering the elastic-plastic asperity contact in the rough surfaces statistically. Mathematical model of system for the positioning apparatus was derived from the dynamic behaviors of structural parts. PID feedback control algorithms with the developed stick-slip model as well as feedforward friction compensator are formulated for achieving the accurate positioning performance. Experimental results are provided to show the performances of friction control using the developed positioning apparatus.

  • A number of algorithm using the VSS(Variable Structure System) for uncertain dynamic system are developed. But, in these algorithms, the assumption that the uncertainties are bounded and their bounds are available to the designer is involved. And bounds on the uncertainties are an important clue to guarantee the stability of the closed loop system. However, sometimes bounds on the uncertainties may not be easily obtained because of the complexity of the structure of the uncertainties. Therefore, a methodology by which the boundary values on the uncertainties can be easily obtained is required. The VSS proposed in this proposal employ the new adaptive VSS scheme for uncertain dynamic system being estimated on line. The resulting control law is simple and easy to apply to on line computer control. It can also suppress chattering and maintain good tracking precision even if unmodeled dynamics are considered. And, a new method using nonlinear switching surface is introduced so that the speed response is improved and the good transient response can be obtained. Simulation results are presented and show the advantage of the proposed adaptive VSS with nonlinear switching surfaces.

  • Magnaporthe grisea, a causal agent of blast, forms a specialized infection structure, an appressorium, to infect host. Hydrophobicity of contact surface and cAMP have been suggested as a primary environmental signal and a second messenger to trigger and mediate appressorium formation in this fungus, respectively. To generalize these factors in field isolates of M. girsea, twenty isolates originated from rice and other gramineous hosts were tested. Seventeen including rice and non-rice isolates formed appressoria on hydrophobic surface, but none of isolates formed appressoria on hydrophilic surface. Eighteen isolates formed appressoria on hydrophilic surface in the presence of IBMX, an inhibitor of phosphodiesterase, except two rice isolates. These results strongly support the hypothesis that appressorium formation by M. grisea is induced by hydrophobic hard surface and regulated by the endogenous level of cAMP in the cells. Understanding fungal development is not only of biological interest but provides new targets for novel disease control strategies.

  • Korean commercial architecture is based on two distinctive characteristics of western modern architecture: grid frame structure and free facade. However, the original facade of the building disappears as numbers of commercial advertisements and signboards representing inner programs cover up the original facade. This is a unique feature of commercial architecture in Korea which I would call the surface phenomena of Korean commercial architecture. Common criticism on this type of building is that too many and too big signboards infringe upon the original pure facade of the architecture. Underlying assumption here is that signboards and commercial ads are inessential and decorative elements simply attached to the original pure facade of modern architecture. However, in this paper, I argue that commercial decorations is an essential aspect of korean commercial architecture rather than an inessential decorative element attached later to the essential facade of architecture and that it reflects the historical specificity of cultural and architectural modernity of Korea And thus, the surface phenomena of Korean commercial architecture should not be judged based upon the aesthetic paradigms of either western modern or postmodern architecture. Rather, it can be argued that surface phenomena of Korean commercial architecture is a reflection of a modernity beyond the paradigm of western modernism and postmodernism. The agenda of Korean commercial architecture is then not simply to restrict or to control signboards on the building facades with the intention to clean up facade of the building but rather to integrate the signs and commercial ads with the structure of architectural surface.

  • Thin Beam Excimer Laser Annealing is investigated as one possible process enabled by the variable concept of Thin Beam LTPS processing. The structure of the resulting p-Si material is analyzed in terms of grain size distribution, scaling with energy density and overlap, as well as average surface roughness. This process provides similar control and latitude as conventional excimer laser annealing, but reduced average surface roughness and the potential to be scaled to significant productivity levels.
