  • Sol-gel binder was prepared by hydrolysis and condensation reaction using boehmite sol and methyltrimethoxysilane as a function of aging-time. The coating slurry was composed of a plate-shape alumina in the sol-gel binder for the EPD process, in which particles dispersed in the slurry were deposited on the electrode under an electric field due to the surface charge. We studied the effects of three parameters: the content of boehmite, the aging time, and the applied voltage, on the physical, thermal, and electrical properties of the hybrid composite films by EPD. The amount of boehmite was 10 ~ 20 wt% and the aging time was 0.5 ~ 72, with a fixed amount of plate-shape alumina of 10 wt%. The condition of applied voltage was 5 ~ 30 V with a distance of 2 cm between the electrode during the EPD process. We confirmed that a structure of hybrid composite films of well-ordered plate alumina was deposited on the substrate when the film was prepared using a sol-gel binder composed of 15 wt% boehmite with 1 hr aging time and EPD at 10 V. The process shows a weight loss of 7% at $500^{\circ}C$ in TGA and a breakdown voltage of 8 kV at $87{\mu}m$.

  • KNN is widely used in the electronic industry such as memory devices, sensors, and capacitors due to various structural, electrical, and eco-friendly properties. In this study, Mn-doped KNN was prepared by adopting a sol-gel method with advantages of low cost and large area thin film fabrication. The Mn-doped KNN thin films were deposited by annealing in air for 1 hour and 700℃. The surface morphology characteristics and grain size of the heat-treated KNN were observed by SEM and AFM, and we used the X-ray diffraction for measuring the crystal phase of KNN. The XRD analysis results show that the fabrication of (K0.5Na0.5)(Nb1-xMnn)O3 thin films by sol-gel method in the thin film process of this experiment was stable in the perovskite phase of c-axis orientation. The SEM and AFM results show that the cracks were not confirmed from the fracture surface data of KNN thin films and were densely deposited with thin films with uniform thickness.

  • HTGR (High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor) is highlighted to next generation power plant for producing the clean hydrogen gas. In this study, the spherical $UO_2$ kernel via $UO_3$ gel particles was prepared by the sol-gel process. Raw material of slightly Acid Deficient Uranyl Nitrate (ADUN) solution, which has pH = 1.10 and $[NO_3]/[U]$ mole ratio = 1.93, was obtained from dissolution of $U_3O_8$ powder with conc.-$HNO_3$. The surface of these spherical $UO_3$ gel particles, which was prepared from the broth solution, consisted of 1 M-uranium, 1 M-HMTA, and urea, were covered with the fine crystallite aggregates, and these particles were so hard that crushed well. But the other $UO_3$ gel particles prepared with the broth solution, consisted of 2 M-uranium, 2 M-HMTA, and urea, have soft surface characteristics and an amorphous phase. This type of $UO_3$ gel particles is some chance of doing possibility of high density from the compaction. The amorphous $UO_3$ gel particles was converted to $U_3O_8$ and then $UO_2$ by calcination at $600^{\circ}C\;in\;4\%\;-\;H_2\;+\;N2$ atmosphere.

  • Frictional characteristics of mesoporous $SiO_2$ thin films were evaluated with different pore sizes. The films were manufactured by sol-gel and self-assembly methods to have a porous structure. The pores on the surface may play as the outlet of wear particle and the storage of lubricant so that the surface interactions could be improved. The pores were exposed on the surface by chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) or plasma-etching after forming the porous films. The ball-on-disk tests with mesoporous $SiO_2$ thin films on glass specimen were conducted at sliding speed of 15 rpm and a load of 0.26 N. The results show considerable dependency of friction on pore size of mesoporous $SiO_2$ thin films. The friction coefficient decreased as increasing the pore size. CMP process was very useful to expose the pores on the surface.

  • The perovskite ferroelectric materials of the PZT, SBT and BST series will attract much attention for application to ULSI devices. Among these materials, the BST ($Ba_0.6$$Sr_0.4$/$TiO_3$) is widely considered the most promising for use as an insulator in the capacitors of DRAMS beyond 1 Gbit and high density FRAMS. Especially, BST thin films have a good thermal-chemical stability, insulating effect and variety of Phases. However, BST thin films have problems of the aging effect and mismatch between the BST thin film and electrode. Also, due to the high defect density and surface roughness at grain boundarys and in the grains, which degrades the device performances. In order to overcome these weakness, we first applied the chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process to the polishing of ferroelectric film in order to obtain a good planarity of electrode/ferroelectric film interface. BST ferroelectric film was fabricated by the sol-gel method. And then, we compared the surface characteristics before and after CMP process of BST films. We expect that our results will be useful promise of global planarization for FRAM application in the near future.

  • PbTiO$_3$ films applicable to buffer layers for YBCO coated conductor have been successfully fabricated by sol-gel process. Crystallinity of grown films are heavily dependent on processing parameters such as annealing atmosphere and number of dipping. (100) oreinted PbTiO$_3$ films grown on (200) oriented Ni substrates exhibit uniform surface with small grain size(200~300nm).

  • The kinetics of volatilization of phosphorous oxide from phosphosilicate glassceramic powders prepared by a sol-gel process were investigated at a given temperature. The rate of P2O5 vaporization increased with the P2O5 concentration in the phosphosilicate powder. Vaporization from the powder containing 46% P2O5 was analyzed using a kinetic model for diffusion limited evaporation. The diffusion through phosphosilicate glass in the surface of each particle in the temperature range 800~85$0^{\circ}C$ are presented.

  • This paper describes the spherical ammonium diuranate gel particles which are the intermediated material of the $UO_2$ microsphere for an VHTR(very high temperature reactor) nuclear fuel. The characteristics of the intermediate-ADU gel particles prepared by AWD(ageing, washing, and drying) and FB(fluidized-bed) apparatus were examined and compared in a sol-gel fabrication process. The electrical conductivity of washing filtrate from the FB treating and the surface area of dried-ADU gel particles were higher than those of AWD treating. Also, an internal pore volume in dried-ADU gel particles showed a more decrease in AWD treatment than FB treatment because of decomposition of PVA affected by the washing time. However, the internal microstructures of ADU gel particles were similar regardless of the process variation.

  • The Mg-enriched magnesium aluminum silicate (MAS) glass is known for its higher mechanical strength and chemical resistance. Among such glasses, cordierite ($Mg_2Al_4Si_5O_{18}$) is well known to have a low thermal expansion and low melting point. Polycrystalline engineering ceramics such as alumina can be strengthened by a surface modification with low thermal expansion materials. The present study involves the synthesis of cordierite by a sol-gel process and investigates the effect of glass penetration on the surface of alumina. The cordierite powders were prepared from $Al(OC_3H_7)_3$, $Mg(OC_2H_5)_2$ and tetraethyl orthosilicate by hydrolysis and condensation reaction. The cordierite powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD, Rigaku), scanning electron microscope (SEM, JEOL: JSM-5610), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS, JEOL: JSM-5610), and universal testing machine (UTM, INSTRON). The X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the synthesized particles were ${\mu}$-cordierite calcined at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The shape of synthesized cordierite was changed from ${\mu}$-cordierite to ${\alpha}$-cordierite with increasing calcination temperature. Synthesized cordierite was used for surface modification of alumina. Cordierite powders penetrated deeply into the alumina sample along grain boundaries with increasing temperature. The results of surface modification tests showed that the strength of the prepared alumina sample increased after surface modification. The strength of a surface modified with synthesized cordierite increased the most, to about 134.6MPa.

  • Composite membranes with a titania layer were prepared by soaking-rolling method with the titania sol of nanoparticles formed in the sol-gel process and investigated regarding the vapor permeation of various organic mixtures. The support modification was conducted by pressing $SiO_2$ xerogel of 500 nm in particle size under 10 MPa on the surface of a porous stainless steel (SUS) substrate and designed the multi-layered structure by coating the intermediate layer of ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$. Microstructure of titania membrane was affected by heat-treatment and synthesis conditions of precursor sol, and titania formed at calcination temperature of 300$^{\circ}C$ with sol of [$H^+$]/[TIP]=0.3 possessed surface area of 210 $m^2$/g, average pore size of 1.25 nm. The titania composite membrane showed high $H_2/N_2$ selectivity and water/ethanol selectivity as 25-30 and 50-100, respectively. As a result of vapor permeation for water-alcohol and alcohol-alcohol mixture, titania composite membrane showed water-permselective and molecular-sieve permeation behavior. However, water/methanol selectivity of the membrane was very low because of chemical affinity of permeants for the membrane by similar physicochemical properties of water and methanol.
