Numerical analysis for slamming impact phenomena has been carried out when 2-dimensional wedge shaped structure with finite deadrise angles enter the free surface by using a commertial CFD code, FLUENT. Fluid is assumed incompressible and entry speed of the structure is kept constant. Geo-reconstruct scheme (or PLIC-VOF scheme) is used for the tracking of the deforming free surface. User defined function of 6 degrees of freedom motion and moving dynamic mesh option are used for the expression of the downward motion of the structure and deforming of unstructured meshes adjacent to the structure. The magnitude and the location of impact pressure and the total drag force which is the summation of pressures distributed at the bottom of the structure are analyzed. Results of the analysis show good agreement with the results of similarity solution, asymptotic solution and the solution of BEM.
FE models for complex or large-scaled structures that need detailed modeling of structural components are usually constructed using commercial analysis softwares. Updating of such FE model by conventional sensitivity-based methods is difficult since repeated computation for perturbed parameters and manual calculations are needed to obtain sensitivity matrix in each iteration. In this study, an FE model updating procedure avoiding such difficulties by using response surface (RS) method and a Pareto-based multiobjective optimization (MOO) was formulated and applied to FE models constructed with a commercial analysis package. The test building is a low-rise reinforced concrete building that has been seismically retrofitted. Dynamic properties of the building were extracted from vibration tests performed before and after the seismic retrofits, respectively. The elastic modulus of concrete and masonry, and spring constants for the expansion joint were updated. Two RS functions representing the errors in the natural frequencies and mode shape, respectively, were obtained and used as the objective functions for MOO. Among the Pareto solutions, the best compromise solution was determined using the TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) procedure. A similar task was performed for retrofitted building by taking the updating parameters as the stiffness of modified or added members. Obtained parameters of the existing building were reasonably comparable with the current code provisions. However, the stiffness of added concrete shear walls and steel section jacketed members were considerably lower than expectation. Such low values are seemingly because the bond between new and existing concrete was not as good as the monolithically casted members, even though they were connected by the anchoring bars.

In addition to its similarity to genuine diamond film, diamond-like carbon (DLC) film has many advantages, including its wide band gap and variable refractive index. In this study, DLC films were prepared by the RF PECVD (Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) method on silicon substrates using methane $(CH_4)$ and hydrogen $(H_2)$ gas. We examined the effects of the post annealing temperature on the structural variation of the DLC films. The films were annealed at temperatures ranging from 300 to $900^{\circ}C$ in steps of $200^{\circ}C$ using RTA equipment in nitrogen ambient. The thickness of the film and interface between film and substrate were observed by surface profiler, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), respectively. Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed that DLC films were graphitized ($I_D/I_G$, G-peak position and $sp^2/sp^3$ increased) ratio at higher annealing temperature. The variation of surface as a function of annealing treatment was verified by a AFM and contact angle method.

The objectives of this paper are to study the heat transfer characteristics on enhanced surfaces, to develop experimental correlations of friction factor and Nusselt number, and to provide a guideline for optimum operation conditions at low temperature boiling for practical refrigeration applications. The working fluid (water, EG $30\%$) flows inside the enhanced tube and R134a boils on the outer surface. Two different types of Turbo-B tubes (Tube I and Tube II) are tested in the present study. The results show that Tube I gives a higher heat transfer coefficient with higher friction factor than Tube II. The present study provided experimental correlations for friction factor and heat transfer coefficient with error bands of ${\pm}5\%\;and\;{\pm}\;15\%$, respectively.
Austenitic stainless steels (ASSs) are widely used for nuclear pipes as they exhibit a good combination of mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. However, high tensile residual stresses may occur in ASS welds because postweld heat treatment is not generally conducted in order to avoid sensitization, which causes a stress corrosion crack. In this study, round robin analyses on stress intensity factors (SIFs) were carried out to examine the appropriateness of structural integrity assessment methods for ASS pipe welds with two types of circumferential cracks. Typical stress profiles were generated from finite element analyses by considering residual stresses and normal operating conditions. Then, SIFs of cracked ASS pipes were determined by analytical equations represented in fitness-for-service assessment codes as well as reference finite element analyses. The discrepancies of estimated SIFs among round robin participants were confirmed due to different assessment procedures and relevant considerations, as well as the mistakes of participants. The effects of uncertainty factors on SIFs were deducted from sensitivity analyses and, based on the similarity and conservatism compared with detailed finite element analysis results, the R6 code, taking into account the applied internal pressure and combination of stress components, was recommended as the optimum procedure for SIF estimation.

Because of the phenological variation of vegetation growth in temperate region, it is often difficult to accurately assess the surface conditions of agricultural croplands, grasslands, and disturbed forests by multi-spectral remote sensor data. In particular, the spectral similarity between soil and dry vegetation has been a primary problem to correctly appraise the surface conditions during the non-growing seasons in temperature region. This study analyzes the spectral characteristics of the mixture of dry vegetation and soil. The reflectance spectra were obtained from laboratory spectroradiometer measurement (GER-2600) and from EO-1 Hyperion image data. The reflectance spectra of several samples having different level of dry vegetation fractions show similar pattern from both lab measurement and hyperspectral image. Red-edge near 700nm and shortwave IR near 2,200nm are more sensitive to the fraction of dry vegetation. The use of hyperspectral data would allow us for better separation between bare soils and other surfaces covered by dry vegetation during the leaf-off season.

Purpose For living donor liver transplantation, liver segmentation is difficult due to the variability of its shape across patients and similarity of the density of neighbor organs such as heart, stomach, kidney, and spleen. In this paper, we propose an automatic segmentation of the liver using multi-planar anatomy and deformable surface model in portal phase of abdominal contrast-enhanced CT images. Method Our method is composed of four main steps. First, the optimal liver volume is extracted by positional information of pelvis and rib and by separating lungs and heart from CT images. Second, anisotropic diffusing filtering and adaptive thresholding are used to segment the initial liver volume. Third, morphological opening and connected component labeling are applied to multiple planes for removing neighbor organs. Finally, deformable surface model and probability summation map are performed to refine a posterior liver surface and missing left robe in previous step. Results All experimental datasets were acquired on ten living donors using a SIEMENS CT system. Each image had a matrix size of $512{\times}512$ pixels with in-plane resolutions ranging from 0.54 to 0.70 mm. The slice spacing was 2.0 mm and the number of images per scan ranged from 136 to 229. For accuracy evaluation, the average symmetric surface distance (ASD) and the volume overlap error (VE) between automatic segmentation and manual segmentation by two radiologists are calculated. The ASD was $0.26{\pm}0.12mm$ for manual1 versus automatic and $0.24{\pm}0.09mm$ for manual2 versus automatic while that of inter-radiologists was $0.23{\pm}0.05mm$. The VE was $0.86{\pm}0.45%$ for manual1 versus automatic and $0.73{\pm}0.33%$ for manaual2 versus automatic while that of inter-radiologist was $0.76{\pm}0.21%$. Conclusion Our method can be used for the liver volumetry for the pre-surgery planning of living donor liver transplantation.

Hydrophobic magnesium hydroxide [$Mg(OH)_2$] was modified by hydrothermal method using non-ionic sorbitol surfactant with Span series. Mganesium chloride [$MgCl_2$] and sodium hydroxide [NaOH] were used for synthesis of $Mg(OH)_2$. Also non-ionic surfactant were added as a stabilizer, dispersant and surface modifier. Addition of non-ionic surfactant was favourable to obtain small sized $Mg(OH)_2$ particles with better dispersibility and hydrophobic property of $Mg(OH)_2$ particles. The obtained product were characterized by particle size analysis(PSA), scanning electron microscope(SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS), x-ray diffraction(XRD) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR). The results show that the product are prepared with this method has a well hydrophobic properties and dispersity compared with unmodified $Mg(OH)_2$ particles. The improve properties of surface modified $Mg(OH)_2$ particles were also verified by similarity synthesizing under slightly different conditions.

In this study, we generated DSM(Digital Surface Model)s and orthophotos with both LIDAR data and scanned aerial photos and compared them with those generated from only the scanned photos. We checked the relief displacements of buildings appearing in the generated orthophotos, where the displacement should not be exist in a true-orthophoto. The RMSE of the relief displacement in the orthophoto generated using a LIDAR DSM is 3 m while the RMSE in the orthophotos from a DSM based on the image matching is 6.1 m. It was revealed that the orthophoto from a LIDAR DSM are closer to a true-orthophoto. But the results in the accuracy test and similarity evaluation of the generated orthophotos were contrary to former results because the roof texture of buildings were expanded to occlusion areas around the buildings. With the central area of the photo, we can generate sufficiently accurate true-orthophotos using a LIDAR DSM.

With the invention of the inlaying technique for celadon in the latter half of the 12th century, the Koryo potters reached a new height of artistic and scientific achievement in ceramics chemical technology. Inlaid celadon shards, collected in 1991 during the surface investigation of Kangjin kilns found on the southwestern shore of South Korea, were imbedded in epoxy resin and polished for cross-section examination. Backscattered electron images were taken with an electron microprobe equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer. The spectrometer was also used to determine the composition of micro-areas. Porcelain stone, weathered rock of quartz, mica, and feldspar composition were found to be the raw material for the body and important components in the glaze and white inlay. The close similarity between glaze and black inlay in the microstructure suggests that the glaze material was modified by adding clay with high iron content, such as biotite, for use as black inlay. The deep soft translucent quality of celadon glaze is brought about by its microstructure of bubbles, remnant and devitrified minerals, and the schlieren effect.
