Two different micro-flows during the evaporation of ink droplets were achieved by engineering both surface tension gradient and compositional gradient across the ink droplet: (1) Coffee-ring generating flow resulting from the outward flow inside the ink droplet & (2) Marangoni flow leading to the circulation flow inside the ink droplet. The surface tension gradient and the compositional gradient in the ink droplets were tailored by mixing two different solvents with difference surface tension and boiling point. In order to create the coffee-ring generating flow (outward flow), a single-solvent system using N,N-dimethylformamide with nano-sized spherical alumina particles was formulated, Marangoni flow (circulation flow) was created in the ink droplets by combining N,N-dimethylformamide and fotmamide with the spherical alumina powders as a co-solvent ink system. We have investigated the effect of these two different flows on the formation of ceramic films by inkjet printing method, The packing density of the ceramic films printed with two different ink systems (single- and co-solvent systems) and their surface roughness were characterized. The dielectric properties of these inkjet-printed ceramic films such as dielectric constant and dissipation factor were also studied in order to evaluate the feasibility of their application to the electronic ceramic package substrate.
We have investigated the impact of coffee ring effect on the inkjet-printed $Al_2O_3$ thick films. In a single solvent system such as Dimethylformamide, the coffee-ring-pattern has appeared on the edge of sessile drop after evaporation. The peak-to-valley height difference in $Al_2O_3$ coffee ring is over 2um. This non-uniform deposition of $Al_2O_3$ over the surface leads to sever surface roughness of the inkjet-printed films. However, we have manipulated our printing parameters to improve the surface roughness and the packing density of the printed $Al_2O_3$ films. Our inkjet-printed $Al_2O_3$ films show 10 times smoother surface than the initially printed sample's surface. Also the packing density of the printed Ah03 film becomes 70% of high packed $Al_2O_3$. In this presentation, we would like to present the key process parameters of the inkjet printing process to overcome the genetic coffee ring problem.
SOI(Silicon On lnsulator) technology is many advantages in the gabrication of MOS(Metal-Oxide Semiconductor) and CMOS(Complementary MOS) structures. These include high speed, lower dynamic power consumption, greater packing density, increased radiation tolearence et al. In smiple form of bonded SOL wafer manufacturing, creation of a bonded SOI structure involves oxidizing at least one of the mirror polished silicon surfaces, cleaning the oxidized surface and the surface of the layer to which it will be bonded, bringing the two cleanded surfaces together in close physical proximity, allowing the subsequent room temperature bonding to proceed to completion, and than following this room temperature joining with some form of heat treatment step, and device wafer is thinned to the target thickness. This paper has been performed to investigate the possibility of the bonded SOI wafer manufacturing Especially, we focused on the bonding quality and thinning method. Finally,we achieved the bonded SOI wafer that Si layer thickness is below 3 .mu. m and average roughness is below 5.angs.
We have fabricated alumina thick films by inkjet printing technology. Two different types of ink system were formulated in order to understand their evaporation behaviors and their evaporation effects on the powder distribution on, the surface during inkjet-printed alumina thick films. Single solvent system was formulated with N,N-dimethylformamide(DMF), which led to coffee ring effects which non-uniformly distributed alumina particles on the substrate during the ink evaporation. However, Co-solvent system which consists of both Water and DMF produced relatively uniform distribution of the particles on the substrate. We believe that these two different distributions of alumina particles are attributed to the ink fluid flow directions in the ink droplets ejected from the different ceramic ink system. We have modulated inkjet parameters such as dot-to-dot distance, line-to-line distance, jetting velocity and jetting drop size in order to find out the optimum condition for the printing of alumina thick films from two different ink systems. The surface roughness, microstructures and dielectric properties of these inkjet-printed alumina thick films were investigated.
A solvent free, highly concentrated silica-acryl monomer hybrid sol was synthesized using aqueous colloidal silica as a precursor. The effects of the silica particle size, type of surface treatment agent employed, and silica content on the formation of the hybrid sol were systematically studied. The optical and physical properties of the coating solution prepared using the hybrid sol were also characterized. The viscosity of the hybrid sol tended to decrease as the particle size of the silica and the molecular weight of the surface treatment agent increased. The PET substrate coated with MPTMS-Mix (mixture, 70 wt%) solution showed the highest surface hardness (6 H) and low surface roughness ($Ra=0.044{\mu}m$), which could be attributed to an increase in packing density caused by the infiltration of small particles into the pores formed between larger particles.
Optical and mechanical characteristics of $TiO-2, ZrO_2 \;and\; SiO_xN_y$ thin films prepared by ion assisted deposition (IAD) were investigated. IAD films were bombarded by Ar or nitrogen ion beam from a Kaufman ion source while they were grown in as e-beam evaporator. The result shows that the Ae IAD increases the refractive index and packing density of $TiO_2 films close to those of the bulk. For $ZrO_2$ films the Ar IAD increases the average refractive index decreases the negative inhomogeneity of refractive index and reverses to the positive inhomogeneity. The optical properties result from improved packing density and denser outer layer next to air The Ar-ion bombardment also induces the changes in microstructure of $ZrO_2$ films such as the preferred (111) orientation of cubic phase increase in compressive stress and reduction of surface roughness. Inhomogeneous refractive index SiOxNy films were also prepared by nitrogen IAD and variable refractive index of $SiO_xN_y$ film was applied to fabricate a rugate filter.
We have successfully demonstrated the inkjet printing process to fabricate $Al_2O_3$ thick films without a high temperature sintering process. A single solvent system had a coffee ring pattern after printing of $Al_2O_3$ dot, line and area. In order to fabricate the smooth surface of $Al_2O_3$ thick film, we have introduced a co-solvent system which has nano-sized $Al_2O_3$ powders in the mixture of Ethylene glycol monomethyl ester and Di propylene glycol methyl ether. This co-solvent system approached a uniform and dense deposition of $Al_2O_3$ powders on the substrate. The packing density of inkjet-printed $Al_2O_3$ films is more than 70% which is very high compared to the value obtained from the films synthesized by other conventional methods such as casting processes. The characterization of the inkjet-printed $Al_2O_3$ films has been implemented to investigate its thickness and roughness. Also the dielectric loss of the films has been measured to understand the feasibility of its application to 3D integration package substrate.
There have been large research activities on the high quality oxide films for the realization oxide based electronics. However, the interface interdiffusion prohibits achieving high quality oxide films, when the oxide films are grown on non-oxide substrates. In the case of Si substrates, there exist lattice mismatch and interface interdiffusion when oxide films deposited on direct Si surface. In this presentation, we report the interface characteristics of yttria-stabilized zirconia films grown on silicon substrates. From x-ray reflectivity analysis we found that the film thickness and interface roughness decreased as the growth temperature increased, indicating that the growth mechanism varies and the chemical reaction is limited to the interface as the growth condition varies. Furthermore, the packing density of the film increased as the growth temperature increased and the film thickness decreased. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of very thin films revealed that the amount of chemical shift increased as the growth temperature increased. Intriguingly, the direction of the chemical shift of Zr was opposite to that of Si due to the second nearest neighbor interaction.
BST(70/30) and BST(50/50) thin films were prepared by Sol-Gel method and studied about the microstructural and dielectric properties with Pt and ITO bottom electrodes. The stock solution was synthesized and spin coated on the Pt/Ti$SiO_2$/Si and Indium Tin Oxide(ITO)/ glass substrate. the coated films were dries at 350$^{\circ}C$ for 10 minutes and annealed at $750^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour for the crystallization. The thin films coated on ITO substrate were crystallized easily and the packing density and roughness of surface were better that those of films coated on Pt substrates. In the BST(50/50) composition the structural properties were similar to the BST(70/30) composition and grain size were decreased with increasing the contents of Sr. The dielectric constant was higher in the BST(50/50) composition compared with the BST(70/30) composition. Using the ITO substrate, the dielectric constant was higher than the Pt substrate while the dielectric loss was showed a reverse trend. The dielectric constant with and increase of temperature was decreased slowly.
