The effects of fermentation temperature$(0{\sim}l5^{\circ}C)$ and salt concentration$(1.5{\sim}4.0%)$ on the fermentation property of Chinese cabbage Kimchi were analyzed by response surface methodology. The pH decreased and acidity increased with increasing fermentation time. The reduction and increment velocities of pH and acidity were increased by increasing fermentation temperature and decreasing salt concentration. The optimum pH 4.2 was reached within $14{\sim}24$ days at $5{\sim}15^{\circ}C$, while pHs of 24 days at $0{\sim}5^{\circ}C$ were still lower value than 4.2. The effect of salt concentration more affected terminal fermentation period than initial fermentation period. The maximum edible acidity, 0.75%, was reached within 8 days at $15^{\circ}C$, while acidifies of 24 days at $0^{\circ}C$ were $0.35{\sim}0.43%$. The effects of salt concentration at $0^{\circ}C$ was higher than those at $15^{\circ}C$. The fermentation time, fermentation temperature and salt concentration were the first, second and third affecting factors on the pH and acidity of Kimchi. Based on the coefficients of determination, pH and acidity were highly fitted to the experimental data$(r^2>0.9276)$. For the suitable acidity range, $0.40{\sim}0.75%$, the edible period of Kimchi at $15^{\circ}C,\;10^{\circ}C\;and\;5^{\circ}C$ were 4 days, 10 days and 18 days at the 2.75% of salt concentration, respectively. The edible period increased from 14 days to 19 days with increased salt concentration from 1.50% to 4.00% at $5^{\circ}C$ of fermentation temperature.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to develop a bioinformatics software and to test it in serum samples of papillary thyroid cancer using mass spectrometry (SELDI-TOF-MS). Materials and Methods: Development of 'Protein analysis' software performing decision tree analysis was done by customizing C4.5. Sixty-one serum samples from 27 papillary thyroid cancer, 17 autoimmune thyroiditis, 17 controls were applied to 2 types of protein chips, CM10 (weak cation exchange) and IMAC3 (metal binding - Cu). Mass spectrometry was performed to reveal the protein expression profiles. Decision trees were generated using 'Protein analysis' software, and automatically detected biomarker candidates. Validation analysis was performed for CM10 chip by random sampling. Results: Decision tree software, which can perform training and validation from profiling data, was developed. For CM10 and IMAC3 chips, 23 of 113 and 8 of 41 protein peaks were significantly different among 3 groups (p<0.05), respectively. Decision tree correctly classified 3 groups with an error rate of 3.3% for CM10 and 2.0% for IMAC3, and 4 and 7 biomarker candidates were detected respectively. In 2 group comparisons, all cancer samples were correctly discriminated from non-cancer samples (error rate = 0%) for CM10 by single node and for IMAC3 by multiple nodes. Validation results from 5 test sets revealed SELDI-TOF-MS and decision tree correctly differentiated cancers from non-cancers (54/55, 98%), while predictability was moderate in 3 group classification (36/55, 65%). Conclusion: Our in-house software was able to successfully build decision trees and detect biomarker candidates, therefore it could be useful for biomarker discovery and clinical follow up of papillary thyroid cancer.
Acid mine drainage (AMD) from abandoned mine sites typically has low pH and contains high level of various heavy metals, aggravating ground- and surface water qualities and neighboring environments. This study investigated removal of heavy metals in a biological treatment system, mainly focusing on the removal by adsorption on a substrate material. Bench-scale batch experiments were performed with a mushroom compost to evaluate the adsorption characteristics of heavy metals leached out from a mine tailing sample and the role of SRB in the overall removal process. In addition, adsorption experiments were perform using an artificial AMD sample containing $Cd^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ to assess adsorption capacity of the mushroom compost. The results indicated Mn leached out from mine tailing was not subject to microbial stabilization or adsorption onto mushroom compost while microbially mediated stabilization played an important role in the removal of Zn. Fe leaching significantly increased in the presence of microbes as compared to autoclaved samples, and this was attributed to dissolution of Fe minerals in the mine tailing in a response to the depletion of $Fe^{3+}$ by iron reduction bacteria. Measurement of oxidation reduction potential (ORP) and pH indicated the reactive mixture maintained reducing condition and moderate pH during the reaction. The results of the adsorption experiments involving artificial AMD sample indicated adsorption removal efficiency was greater than 90% at pH 6 condition, but it decreased at pH 3 condition.

The objective of this study was to know the qualities of soil and shallow groundwater in plastic film house fields around Central Part of Korea. The study was conducted at 11 sites in Suweon, Hwasung, Pyungtaek, Yongin and Chuncheon through May to August in 1999. Soil textures of plastic films house were mainly sandy loam or loam. Electric conductivity and organic matter content of surface soils mostly exceeded the critical levels for crop production. Average concentration of $NO_3-N$ in the sha]low groundwater was 19.1 mg/L, and it reached almost the limiting level of agricultural groundwater quality (20 mg/L). Moreover about 36% of survey sites exceeded the limiting level of agricultural groundwater quality. Sulfate concentrations also at some sites exceeded agricultural groundwater quality limit level (50 mg/L). Nitrate-N, one of the most important factors in the groundwater quality, had positive correlations with other ions in foundwater.
BACKGROUND: Eutrophication occurs occasionally in flood control reservoirs around Juam lake in summer and early autumn. Lakeside macrophyte which is one of internal pollutants effects on water quality when it is submerged during water surface is rising after rainy season. METHODS AND RESULTS: To improve water the quality of water from water supply source and to establish the management plan of submerged plants in flood control reservoirs around Juam Lake, the removal and release velocities of nutrients by submerged plants in site 1 and 2 were investigated. Removal or release velocity constant (K) of COD by Carex dimorpholepis Steud in column was 0.07~0.18 $day^{-1}$ at 0~4 days after flooding, -0.23~-0.17 $day^{-1}$ at 5~19 days after flooding and -0.28~0.03 $day^{-1}$ at 20~33 days after flooding. Removal or release velocity constant (K) of T-N by Carex dimorpholepis Steud was 0.02 $day^{-1}$ at 0~4(8) days after flooding, -0.13~-0.10 $day^{-1}$ at 5(9)~33 days after flooding in column. Removal or release velocity constant (K) of T-P by Carex dimorpholepis Steud was 0.05~0.06 $day^{-1}$ at 0~4 days after flooding, -0.14~-0.09 $day^{-1}$ at 5~33 days after flooding. Release velocity constant (K) of nutrients by Miscanthus sacchariflorus Benth was lower than that by Carex dimorpholepis Steud. In site 1, the amount of nutrients release by Carex dimorpholepis Steud was 6,719 kg/month/area for COD, 2,397 kg/month/area for T-N and 466 kg/month/area for T-P. The amounts of nutrients release by Carex dimorpholepis Steud were higher than those by Miscanthus sacchariflorus Benth in both sites. CONCLUSION(s): The results of this study suggest that COD, T-N and T-P in water quality of Juam lake were strongly influenced by submerged plants in flood control reservoirs.
Biosorption uses adsorbents derived from non-living biomass and removes toxic metals from industrial wastewater. The objective of this research was to evaluate the potential of low cost biosorbents to remove heavy metal ions (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) from aqueous solutions using chemically modified rice husk and saw dust (Pseudotsuga menziesi, Quercus, Populus). Batch-type adsorption experiments were carried out using rice husk and saw dust treated with NaOH and/or tartaric acid in artificial wastewater 100 mg metal/L). The experimental results showed that the adsorption specificity of each biosorbent was Pb > Cu > Cd > Zn irrespective of the types of biosorbents. The adsorption capacity of Pb and Cu onto NaOH-treated sawdust was increased 2${\sim}$3 times compared to the untreated one. In addition, the tartaric acid treatment increased the adsorption capacity of rice husk for Zn and Cd approximately 5${\sim}$10 fold compared to the untreated one. Surface conditions and changes in functional groups by chemical modification of each biosorbent were confirmed by SEM and FT-IR. Overall, the results show that chemical modification increases the metal removal capacity of rice bran and sawdust.
The efficiency of the synthetic magnesium silicate used in basic polyols and edible oil purification is evaluated by its purification ability and filtration rate and is affected by the particle size and surface area of magnesium silicate. In this study, it was investigated the change on the particle size of magnesium silicate was influenced by the reaction temperature, injection rate, injection order (Si, Mg) and Mg/Si reaction mole ratio. The synthesized magnesium silicate was compared and analyzed for the synthesis, grinding, and refining processes. In the synthesis process, the reaction temperature and feed rate did not affect the average particle size change of magnesium silicate, while the reaction molar ratio of Mg / Si and the order of injection acted as main factors for the change of average particle size. The average particle size of magnesium silicate increased by 8.7 ㎛ from 54.4 ㎛ to 63.1 ㎛ at Mg injection when Mg molar ratio increased from 0.125 to 0.500, and increased by about 4.8 ㎛ from 47.3 ㎛ to 52.1 ㎛ at Si injection. The average particle size according to the order of injection was 59.1 ㎛ for Mg injection and 48.4 ㎛ for Si injection and the difference was shown 10.7 ㎛, therefore the filtration rate was about 2 times faster under the condition of Mg injection. That is, as the particle size increases, the filtration time is shortened and washing filtration rate can be increased to improve the productivity of magnesium silicate. The cake form of separated magnesium silicate after filtration becomes a solid through drying process and is used as powdery adsorbent through the grinding process. As the physical strength of the dried magnesium silicate increased, the average particle size of the powder increased and it was confirmed that this strength was affected by the reaction molar ratio. As the reaction molar ratio of Mg / Si increased, the physical strength of magnesium silicate decreased and the average particle size after grinding decreased by about 40% compared to the average particle size after synthesis. This reduction of strength resulted in an improvement of the refining ability due to the decrease of the average particle size and the increase of the amount of fine particle after the pulverization, but it resulted in the decrease of the purification filtration rate. While the molar ratio of Mg/Si was increased from 0.125 to 0.5 at Mg injection, the refining ability increased about 1.3 times, but the purification filtration rate decreased about 1.5 times. Therefore, in order to improve the productivity of magnesium silicate, the reaction molar ratio of Mg / Si should be increased, but in order to increase the purification filtration rate of the polyol, the reaction molar ratio should be decreased. In the synthesis parameters of magnesium silicate, the order of injection and the reaction molar ratio of Mg / Si are important factors affecting the changes in average particle size after synthesis and the changes of particle size after grinding due to the changes of compressive strength, therefore the synthetic parameter is an important thing that determines productivity and refining capacity.
This study was to examine the physicochemical characteristics of coagulation reaction between ignited oyster shell powder (IOSP) and red tide organisms (RTO), and its feasibility, in developing a technology for the removal of RTO bloom in coastal sea,IOSP was made from oyster shell and its physicochemical characteristics were examined for particle size distribution, surface characteristic by scanning electron microscope, zeta potential, and alkalinity and pH variations in sea water. Two kinds of RTO that were used in this study, Cylindrotheca closterium and Skeletonema costatum, were sampled in Masan bay and were cultured in laboratory. Coagulation experiments were conducted using various c(Incentrations of IOSP, RTO, and a jar tester. The supernatant and RTO culture solution were analyzed for pH, alkalinity, RTO cell number, IOSP showed positive zeta potentials of $11.1{\~}50.1\;mV\;at\;pH\;6.2{\~}12.7$, A positive zeta potential of IOSP slowly decreased with decreasing pNa 4,0 to 2,0. When pNa reached zero, the zeta potential approached zero, When a pMg value was decreased, the positive zeta potential of IOSP increased until pMg 3.0 and decreased below pMg 3.0. IOSP showed 4.8 mV of positive zeta potential while RTO showed -9.2 mV of negative zeta potential in sea water. A positive-negative EDL (electrical double-layer) interaction occurred between $Mg(OH)_2$ adsorption layer of IOSP and RTO in sea water so that EDL attractive force always worked between them. Hence, their coagulation reaction occurred at primary minimum on which an extreme attractive force acted because of charge neutralization by $Mg(OH)_2$ adsorption layer of IOSP. As a result, the coagulation reaction was rapidly processed and was irreversible according to DLVO (Deriaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek) theory. Removal rates of RTO were exponentially increased with increasing both IOSP concentration and G-value. The removal rates were steeply increased until 50 mg/l of IOSP and reached $100{\%}\;at\;400\;mg/l$ of IOSP. Removal rates of RTO were $70.5,\;70.5,\;81.7,\;85.3{\%}$ for G-values of $1,\;6,\;29,\;139\;sec^(-1)$at IOSP 100 mg/l, respectively. This indicated that mixing (i.e., collision among particles) was very important for a coagulation reaction.
This study is intended to find out the influence of Lignosulfonic Acid Type Admixture on compressive, tensile, flexural strength and dispersing action of mortar, and fixation of by-product of pulp industry. 1. The more Pozzolith-84 is added, the larger flow value is. The admixture of lignosulfonic acid type adhere to cement particles and the surface potential of particles is generated. On account of the repulsion among the cement particles, they are dispersed and the mortar get workable, so the production cost of precast product is curtailed and the amount of cement is reduced in a certain workability of mortar. 2. The strength of mortar is greater than plain mortar when P/C added is 0.2 and 0.4%. As time passed the potential energy is reduced and the distance of particles which lignosulfonic acid adhered to get near according as the amount of adhesion is increased. The setting and hardening reaction of morter is occurred in close state, so the strength of mortar is increased a little. The strength of mortar is less than plain mortar when amount P/C added is 0.8%. Pozzolith-84 is mainly composed of lignosulfonic acid and lignin does not influence the hardening of mortar, therefore the remained $SO_3$, $SO_3H$ are the reason of decrease of strength. 3. There is high significance between specific gravity and compressive strength. The larger specific gravity is, the more compressive strength is increased. There is high significance between 7 day's strength and 28 day's strength. The larger compressive strength is, the more tensile and flexural strength are increased. 4. Since Pozzolith-84 is a by-product of pulp industry, by using the Pozzolith-84 admixture the concreate quality is improved. The water pollusion is reduced according to fix by-products in concrete structure.
Purpose: This study relates to the development of the prism dot-sight combined with the thermal imaging camera. Methods: We have placed a reflector designed to the doublet type in the front of a BS (beam splitting) prism, have placed an OLED panel and a dot reticle generator to the top and bottom of the reflecting surface of the BS prism, and have placed a detachable magnifier between the BS prism and the observer by which the observer can see the magnified image of the OLED panel. By doing this, we were able to configure the new type prism dot-sight combined with the thermal imaging camera. Results: By placing the removable magnifier designed with a new type between the BS prism and the observer, we could design the new type prism dot-sight which performs the role of the dot sight by removing the magnifier during the day-time, and performs the role of the night scope during the night-time by which we can observe the enlarged image of the thermal imaging camera through the BS prism by attaching the removable magnifier. Conclusions: In this study, we have developed the prism dot-sight combined with the thermal imaging camera which is able to play the role of the day or night scope selectively, by disposing the designed magnifier characterized by the focal length of 44 mm, the viewing angle of ${\pm}7.0^{\circ}$, and the MTF value of 0.5 or more at the criterion of 50 lp/mm and the 0.7 field between the BS prism and the observer. By doing so, we could design and fabricate the new type prism dot-sight combined with the thermal imaging camera which can further increase the rapidity of firing and provide more convenience in the mounting of a firearm than the detachable combination of an existing dot sight and an existing night scope.
