This study was carried out to investigate the applicability of the conventional design method for ground supported circular cylindrical shell structures. For this purpose, the ensiled farm silo was adopted as a model structures. Herein, the conventional design method was based on the assumption that such structures are clamped at the bottom edges or the ground pressure is independent of the deflection at the surface. In the present paper, the applicability of above assumption was checked out by comparison with an exact method considering soil-structure interaction. Some results of numerical calculation show us ; When the ground is very hard, for example Winkler's constant k is larger than 100 kg / cm$^2$ / cm, or the bottom plate of structures has a infinitely stiffness, for example the bottom plate thickness is larger than 100 cm, the sectional forces, obtained from the conventional method at any wall of structures resting on an elastic foundation, can used for design purpose. Therefore, if the above condition is satisfied then the conventional assumptions can be justified for the design purpose. In this case, the assumption that such structures are fixed at the lower edges was more realistic than the assumption that the reaction pressure acting on structures is uniformly disributed since the accuracy of results of the analysis by the former assumption was higher than that obtained from the latter assumption. But the sectional forces in the bottom plate resting on ground directly could not be evaluate correctly by the conventional method.
A 4-story reinforced concrete structure built above an underground parking garage shows some slab deflections, and the deflections of the concrete floor slabs are proposed to be alleviated by the application of light-weight topping material in conjunction with localized strengthening of the slabs. The application of light-weight concrete topping on the existing slab has been simulated and its performance to anticipated loads has been analyzed. The application of light-weight topping material imposes additional weight on the exiting floor slabs. This added weight on the existing slabs causes over-stressing of the slabs. This over-stressing can be alleviated by enhancing the load carrying capacity of the existing slabs. Additional load carrying capacity in the existing slabs can be developed by localized strengthening of the slabs utilizing techniques such as the application of fiber-reinforced composites on the bottom surface of the slabs, and application of fiber-reinforced composites adequately complements the capacity of the existing slabs to bear the additional load imposed by light-weight leveling material. Additional moments in the beam and columns induced by the application of the light-weight topping material were tabulated and compared with capacity. The moment D/C ratios of the beam and columns are well the range of acceptable limits, and the beam and columns are not overstressed by the application of the surcharge.

This paper proposes an integrated approach, which is independent of specimen geometry and loading type, for predicting the fatigue life of spot welded specimens. We first establish finite element models reflecting the actual specimen behaviors observed on the experimental load-deflection curves of 4 types of single spot welded specimens. Using finite element models elaborately established, we then evaluate fracture parameter J-integral to describe the effects of specimen geometry and loading type on the fatigue life in a comprehensive manner. It is confirmed, however, that J-integral concept alone is insufficient to clearly explain the generalized relationship between load and fatigue life of spot welded specimens. On this ground, we introduce another effective parameter $J_e$ composed of $J_I$, $J_{II}$, $J_{III}$, which has been demonstrated here to more sharply define the relationship between load and fatigue life of 4 types of spot welded specimens. The crack surface displacement method is adopted for decomposition of J, and the mechanism of the mixed mode fracture is also discussed in detail as a motivation of using $J_e$.
It has been recognized for decades that the spherical bearing which is sliding on curved surface in the intrinsic behavior is optimized for the railway bridge requiring a large slope deflection. However, the spherical bearing is easily corrosived at the PSC girder bridge which is exposed to the outside so the normal function of bridge bearing is not fulfilled fully. It is common that the corrosion is happened at the operating plate of steel bridge bearing and generally it is necessary to replace the bridge bearing after 20~25 years. Accordingly, It costs multi billion dollars for maintenance each year and the necessity of improvement become a issue. Korea Rail Network Authority(KR) suggested to apply the Elastomeric bearing instead of Spherical bearing through the task of construction site of 2006. But the normal Elastomeric bearing is optimized for the Highway bridge so it needs the special consideration to satisfy each design condition required by railway bridge. As the result of examination of Elastomeric bearing at the railway bridge construction site, the stress is decreased by effective dispersion of earthquakes and the maintenance fee is also decreased.
In this paper, it is intended to introduce a method to solve multi-objective optimization problems and to evaluate its performance. In order to verify the performance of this method it is applied for a vertical roller mill for Portland cement. A design process is defined with the compromise decision support problem concept and a design process consists of two steps: the design of experiments and mathematical programming. In this process, a designer decides an object that the objective function is going to pursuit and a non-linear optimization is performed composing objective constraints with practical constraints. In this method, response surfaces are used to model objectives (stress, deflection and weight) and the optimization is performed for each of the objectives while handling the remaining ones as constraints. The response surfaces are constructed using orthogonal polynomials, and orthogonal array as design of experiment, with analysis of variance for variable selection. In addition, it establishes the relative influence of the design variables in the objectives variability. The constrained optimization problems are solved using sequential quadratic programming. From the results, it is found that the method in this paper is a very effective and powerful for the multi-objective optimization of various practical design problems. It provides, moreover, a reference of design to judge the amount of excess or shortage from the final object.

Recent developments in characterization techniques for solar cells are reviewed. First, general rules of material selection for solar cells such as $CuInSe_2$ and amorphous silicon of photovoltaic application are studied. Secondly, a method to obtain correct cell efficiency measurements under AM1 condition is introduced. Thirdly, various characterization techniques for solar cells are discussed. A special emphasis is given to up-scaling and computer control of the characterizations in the following systems; cell I-V characteristics for cell efficiency and other cell parameters, spectral response for quantum efficiency, surface photovoltage for diffusion length of minority carriers, and photothermal deflection for density of states in energy gaps.
There is an indispensable need for force calibration for quantitative nanoscale force measurement using atomic force microscopy. Calibrating the normal force is relatively straightforward, whereas doing so for the lateral force is often complicated because of the difficulty in determining the optical lever sensitivity. In particular, the lateral force calibration of a colloidal probe in a liquid environment often has a larger uncertainty as a result of the effects of the epoxy, the location of the colloidal particle on the cantilever, and a decrease in the quality factor. In this work, the lateral force of a colloidal probe using a reference cantilever with a known spring constant was calibrated in a liquid environment. By obtaining the spring constant and the lateral sensitivity at the equator of a spherical colloidal particle, the damage to the bottom surface of the colloidal particle could be eliminated. Further, it was shown that the effect of the contact stiffness on the determination of the lateral spring constant of the cantilever could be minimized. It was concluded that this method can be effectively used for the lateral force calibration of a colloidal probe in a liquid environment.
The dynamic fracture toughness, fracture characteristics, impact tension and tensile properties of Al-Mg-Si T5 alloy and Al-Zn-Mg T6 alloy respectively welded with filler metal of Alcan 4043 were investigated. The dynamic fracture toughness values were obtained rapidly and simply for the specimen of small size by using instrumented Chirpy impact testing machine. the testing temperatures of the specimen were a range of room temperature and-196.deg. C. The results obtained in this experiment are summarized as follows. With decreasing the testing temperatures, dynamic tensile stress and fracture load were increased, on the other hand the deflection and impact value showed decreasing tendency in order of base metal>HAZ>weld. Changes of total absorbed energy were more influenced by the crack propagation energy than the crack initiation energy. At the low temperatures, the unstable rapid fracture representing the crack propagation appeared for the specimens of Charpy press side notched in Al-Zn-Mg alloy, but it was difficult to obtain the unstable rapid fracture in Al-Mg-Si alloy. Because of the development of plastic zone at the notch root, it was difficult to obtain thevalid $K_{1d}$ value in Al-Mg-Si alloy. Therefore the fatigue cracked specimens were effective in both Al-Mg-Si and Al-Zn-Mg alloys. With decreasing the impact testing temperatures, specimens underwent a transition from dimple-type transgranular fracture to lamella surface-type intergranular fracture because of the precipitate at the grain boundaries, impurities and crystal structure of the precipitates.s.

A laterally driven electromagnetic microactuator (LaDEM) is presented, and a micro-optical switch is designed and fabricated as a possible application. LaDEM provides parallel actuation of the microactuator to the silicon substrate surface (in-plane mode) by the Lorentz force. Poly-silicon-on-insulator (Poly-SOI) wafers and a reactive ion etching (RIE) process were used to fabricate high-aspect-ratio vertical microstructures, which allowed the equipment of a vertical micro mirror. A fabricated arch-shaped leaf spring has a thickness of $1.8{\mu}m$, width of $16{\mu}m$, and length of $800{\mu}m$. The resistance of the fabricated structure fer the optical switch was approximately 5$\Omega$. The deflection of the leaf springs increases linearly up to about 400 mA and then it demonstrates a buckling behavior around the current value. Owing to this nonlinear phenomenon, a large displacement of $60{\mu}m$ could be measured at 566 mA. The displacement-load relation and some dynamic characteristics are analyzed using the finite element simulations.

In this paper, the procedure of generation and application of nonlinear wave loads for structural design of large container carrier was described. Ship motion and wave load was calculated by modified strip method. Pressure acting on wetted hull surface was calculated taking into account of relative hull motion to the wave. Design wave height was determined based on the most sensitive wave length considering rule vertical wave bending moment at head sea or fellowing sea condition. And the enforced heeling angie concept which was introduced by Germanischer Lloyd (GL) classification had been used to simulate high torsional moment in way of fore hold parts similar to actual sea going condition. Using wave load generated from this dynamic load calculation, FE analyses were performed. With this result, yielding, buckling, hatch diagonal deflection and fatigue strength of hatch corners were reviewed based on the requirement of GL classification. The results of FE analysis show good compatibility with GL classification.
