Agarose hydrogel, a solid electrolyte, was investigated voltammetrically in terms of transport properties and natural convection effects using a ferrocenyl compound as a redox probe. To confirm the diffusion properties of solute on the agarose interface, the diffusion coefficients (D) of ferrocenemethanol in agarose hydrogel were determined by cyclic voltammetry (CV) according to the concentration of agarose hydrogel. While the value of D on the agarose interface is smaller than that in the bulk solution, the square root of the scan rate-dependent peak current reveals that the mass transport behavior of the solute on the agarose surface shows negligible convection or migration effects. In order to confirm the reduced natural convection on the gel interface, scan rate-dependent CV was performed in the solution phase and on the agarose surface, respectively. Slow scan voltammetry at the gel interface can determine a conventional and reproducible diffusion-controlled current down to a scan rate of 0.3 mV/s without any complicated equipment.

Sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy has recently been used to investigate the surface of the various polymers and was able to find the chemical compositions and structures specific to the surface. Here we report our studies on two specific polymer samples to demonstrate its capability. Polyimide thin films were made by spin coating on fused quartz and $CaF_2$ substrates. The sum-frequency signal originating mainly from the air/polymer interface showed markedly different spectra, indicating the structural change of the polymer surface depending on the underlying substrate. Various polyethylene surfaces were also investigated by sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy. The surface of polyethylene samples in the CH-region showed different sum-frequency spectra, presumably due to the trace amount of additives having much higher concentration at the air/polymer interface. These examples demonstrate the surface and interface of the polymer could have different structure and chemical composition from those of a bulk, which can be studied effectively by surface nonlinear optical spectroscopy.

This paper proposes an ultrasonic measurement method for measurement of linear interfacial stiffness of contacting surface between two steel plates subjected to nominal compression pressures. Interfacial stiffness was evaluated by using shear waves reflected at contact interface of two identical solid plates. Three consecutive reflection waves from solid-solid surface are captured by pulse-echo method to evaluate the state of contact interface. A non-dimensional parameter defined as the ratio of their peak-to-peak amplitudes are formulated and used to calculate the quantitative stiffness of interface. Mathematical model for 1-D wave propagation across interfaces is developed to formulate the reflection and transmission waves across the interface and to determine the interfacial stiffness. Two identical plates are fabricated and assembled to form contacting surface and to measure interfacial stiffness at different states of contact pressure by means of bolt fastening. It is found from experiment that the amplitude of interfacial stiffness is dependent on the pressure and successfully determined by employing pulse-echo ultrasonic method without measuring through-transmission waves.

Commerical purity aluminium , copper and STS 304 stainless steel sheets are welded by ultrasonic welding. The microstructures, x-ray diffraction profiles of planes , pole figures of the surface of original metal sheets are compared with those of the weld interface. The microstructures show disturbance and dark areas in the weld interface and grain refinement in the vicinity of the interface. The x-ray diffraction intensity of each plane in weld interface decreased in all metal sheets with exception of 9200) in steel sheet. The microstructure and x-ray diffraction intensity is affected by the mixture of deformation, heating and vibratin duringthe ultrasonic welding. Therefore, after the ultrasonic welding, the positions of the peak intensity in the pole figures are changed, the value of the maximum pole intensity is decreased in Al, is increased in copper and stainless steel. Very strong {100} <001> texture, strong {100} <001>,{123}<634> textures in original Al surface are transformed into weak, {100}<001>, {110}<112> and {112}<111> components in weld surface, weak (110) fiber is slightly changed to (110) fiber in copper, (100)and ${\gamma}$ fiber components are transformed into strong ${\gamma}$ fiber component in stainless steel.

Presented in this study is an algorithmic procedure to obtain polyhedral model from a compound surface. The compound surface in this study denotes a collection of trimmed surfaces without topological relations. The procedure consists of two main modules: CAD data interface, and surface conversion to polyhedral model. The interface module gets geometric information from CAD databases, and makes topological information by scanning the geometric information. We are investigating CATIA system as a data source system. In the surface conversion module, a shell(compound surface with topological information) is approximated to a triangular-faceted polyhedral surface model through node sampling and triangulation steps. The obtained polyhedral model should obey the vertex-to-vertex rule and meet tolerance requirements. Since the polyhedral model has a simple data structure and geometry processing for it is very efficient and robust, the polyhedral model can be used in various applications, such as surface rendering in computer graphics, FEM model for engineering analysis, CAPP for surface machining, data generation for SLA, and NC tool path generation.

A code is developed to simulate incompressible free surface flows using the Roe's flux-difference splitting scheme. An interface of two fluids is considered as a moving contact discontinuity. The continuities of pressure and normal velocity across the interface are enforced by the conservation law in the integral sense. The fluxes are computed using the Roe's flux-difference splitting scheme for two incompressible fluids. The interface can be identified based on the computed density distribution. However, no additional treatment is required along the interface during the whole computations. Complicated time evolution of the interface including topological change can be captured without any difficulties. The developed code is applied to simulate the Rayleigh-Taylor instability of two incompressible fluids in the density ratio of 7.2:1 and the broken dam problem of water-air. The present results are compared with other available results and good agreements are achieved for the both cases.
A test-area molecular dynamics simulation method for the vapor-liquid interface of argon through a Lennard-Jones intermolecular potential is presented in this paper as a primary study of interfacial systems. We found that the calculated density profile along the z-direction normal to the interface is not changed with time after equilibration and that the values of surface tension computed from this test-area method are fully consistent with the experimental data. We compared the thermodynamic properties of vapor argon, liquid argon, and argon in the vapor-liquid interface. Comparisons are made with kinetic and potential energies, diffusion coefficient, and viscosity.
We investigate the characteristics of the surface mode formed at the single interface between dual singly negative medium layers. It is shown that the interface can support a mode which has polarization degeneracy and a vanishing propagation constant. That is, this surface mode is a polarization-independent one that does not propagate at all through the interface. The corresponding electric and magnetic field distributions become static along the longitudinal (guiding) direction (but not along the transverse direction) resulting in the formation of transverse-electric/longitudinalmagnetic or transverse-magnetic/longitudinal-electric modes.

The effects of blasting and acidic treatment on the corrosion characteristics of dental implant fabricated with Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been researched by using electrochemical methods. The fabricated implants were cleaned and sandblasted by $Al_2O_3$ powder and then acidic treatment was carried out in nitric acid solution. The surface morphology were observed using scanning electron microscope. The corrosion behaviors were investigated using potentiosat and EIS in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The potentio-dynamic test in 0.9% NaCl indicated that the corrosion potential of blasting and acidic treated implant was lower than that of non treated implant, but current density was higher than that of non treated implant. From the cyclic potentiodynamic test results of Ti implant, the passivation current density of blasting and acidic treated implant slightly higher than that of non treated implant. From A.C. impedance test results in 0.9% NaCl solution, polarization resistance($R_p$) value of blasting and acidic treated implant was lower than that of non treated implant. In case of blasting and acidic treated implant surface, the pits were observed in valley and crest of implant surface.
This study applies the 'interface' as the concept to interpret the facade design of parking garages. This study investigates the characteristics of interface design in the parking garages to improve design qualities of parking garages as a daily living space as well as a public space in today's city. The facade of parking garage is an interface between the urban streets and the parking space. Three concepts of interface and design in parking garage are defined. The concept of interface is explained as a boundary surface which activates communication and interaction. In facade design of parking garage, three main concepts of interface design are screen, communication and mobility. Through the investigation of the examples, this study summarizes the characteristics of the facade design of parking garage as follow; first, the facade of parking garage is designed as a screen which represents immateriality by specially selected and arranged surface materials. The screen facade is designed as one homogeneous surface as well as an irregular pattern with operable louvers. Second, the facade of parking garage is designed as a communication media to deliver direct information. The representation of natural or artificial characteristics at the local areas is to communicate with the people in the community. Third, the facade of parking garage is represented mobility which a car symbolizes. It emphasizes various movements and visual changes by movements. People can experience the visual changes of the building facade as they walk or drive. The visual changes of the facade are caused by natural elements such as wind and light as well as an optical illusion.
