The Langmuir adsorption isotherms of the over-potentially deposited hydrogen (OPD H) fur the cathodic $H_2$ evolution reaction (HER) at the poly-Au and $Rh|0.5M\;H_2SO_4$ aqueous electrolyte interfaces have been studied using cyclic voltammetric and ac impedance techniques. The behavior of the phase shift $(0^{\circ}{\leq}{-\phi}{\leq}90^{\circ})$ for the optimum intermediate frequency corresponds well to that of the fractional surface coverage $(1{\geq}{\theta}{\geq}0)$ at the interfaces. The phase-shift profile $({-\phi}\;vs.\;E)$ for the optimum intermediate frequency, i.e., the phase-shift method, can be used as a new electrochemical method to determine the Langmuir adsorption isotherm $({\theta}\;vs.\;E)$ of the OPD H for the cathodic HER at the interfaces. At the poly-Au|0.5M $H_2SO_4$ aqueous electrolyte interface, the equilibrium constant (K) and the standard free energy $({\Delta}G_{ads})$ of the OPD H are $2.3\times10^{-6}$ and 32.2kJ/mol, respectively. At the poly-Rh|0.5M $H_2SO_4$ aqueous electrolyte interface, K and ${\Delta}G_{ads}$ of the OPD H are $4.1\times10^4\;or\;1.2\times10^{-2}$ and 19.3 or 11.0kJ/mol depending on E, respectively. In contrast to the poly-Au electrode interface, the two different Langmuir adsorption isotherms of the OPD H are observed at the poly-Rh electrode interface. The two different Langmuir adsorption isotherms of the OPD H correspond to the two different adsorption sites of the OPD H on the poly-Rh electrode surface.
This study presents a molecular simulation of adhesion control between carbon nanotube (CNT) and Ag thin film deposited on silicon substrate. Rough and flat Ag thin film models were prepared to investigate the effect of surface roughness on adhesion force. Heat treatment was applied to the models to modify the adhesion characteristics of the Ag/CNT interface based on thermal wetting. Simulation results showed that the heat treatment altered the Ag thin film morphology by thermal wetting, causing an increase in contact area of Ag/CNT interface and the adhesion force for both the flat and rough models changed. Despite the increase in contact area, the adhesion force of flat Ag/CNT interface decreased after the heat treatment because of plastic deformation of the Ag thin film. The result suggests that internal stress of the CNT induced by the substrate deformation contributes in reduction of adhesion. Contrarily, heat treatment to the rough model increases adhesion force because of the expanded contact area. The contact area is speculated to be more influential to the adhesion force rather than the internal stress of the CNT on the rough Ag thin film, because the CNT on the rough model contains internal stress regardless of the heat treatment. Therefore, as demonstrated by simulation results, the heat treatment can prevent delamination or wear of CNT coating on a rough metallic substrate by thermal wetting phenomena.

The transition boiling of a liquid droplet on a heated flat surface was studied utilizing Kotake's model with the effects of viscosity of a thin vapor layer between the droplet and the hot plate taken into account. This problem was analyzed considering the process of the droplet evaporation which resulted in hydrodynamic instability at the liquid-vapor interface. The results of the study are as follows; (1)The effect of the viscosity in the vapor layer at the interface appears as a dimensionless number N, namely .sigma. .delta.$_{0}$ /.rho.nu.$^{2}$ (2)The time required for evaporation at the transitional region increases with the temperature difference ratio .DELTA. T$_{r}$. The rate of increase of the total evaporation time becomes larger as increasing of N$_{m}$(N number at maximum heat flux) increases.s.

In order to investigate nanotube morphology change of Ti-6Al-4V alloys by heat treatments, the Ti-6Al-4V alloys were used in this study. In non-treated Ti-6Al-4V alloy case, nanotubes only exhibited at ${\alpha}$ phase region with dissolved V-oxide area of ${\beta}$ phase. However, in Ti-6Al-4V alloy at $800^{\circ}C$ WQ case, nanotubes exhibited at both ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phase region. Electrochemical corrosion studies showed that the nanotubular alloy at $800^{\circ}C$WQ possesses slightly higher corrosion resistance than non-treated nanotubular alloy.
In this paper we describe the status of a silicon-based microelectrode for neural recording and an advanced neural interface. We have developed a silicon neural probe, using a combination of plasma and wet etching techniques. This process enables the probe thickness to be controlled precisely. To enhance the CMOS compatibility in the fabrication process, we investigated the feasibility of the site material of the doped polycrystalline silicon with small grains of around 50 nm in size. This silicon electrode demonstrated a favorable performance with respect to impedance spectra, surface topography and acute neural recording. These results showed that the silicon neural probe can be used as an advanced microelectrode for neurological applications.

This paper reviews and compares three different methods for modeling incompressible and immiscible ternary fluid flows: the immersed boundary, level set, and phase-field methods. The immersed boundary method represents the moving interface by tracking the Lagrangian particles. In the level set method, an interface is defined implicitly by using the signed distance function, and its evolution is governed by a transport equation. In the phase-field method, the advective Cahn-Hilliard equation is used as the evolution equation, and its order parameter also implicitly defines an interface. Each method has its merits and demerits. We perform the several simulations under different conditions to examine the merits and demerits of each method. Based on the results, we determine the most suitable method depending on the specific modeling needs of different situations.

Stability improvement of fragile LB films was attempted by polyion complexation of monolayers at the air-water interface and crosslinking of the resulting LB films. The spreading polymers were synthesized by radical copolymerization of monoalkyl itaconate with oligoethyleneglycol methyl vinylether, and poly(allylamine) was employed as the subphase polymer. Formation and characteristic of the monolayers were comfirmed by surface pressure-area($\pi$-A) isotherms. The two different polymers formed polyion-complexed monolayer through the formation of carboxylate/ammonium salt at the air-water interface. Y-type deposition occurred on solid substrates, and the transfer ratio was over 0.7. Pores (diameter, 0.1$\mu\textrm{m}$) of a membrane filter could be covered by polyion-complexed 6 layers. Interactions of the polymers with metal ions were investigated of the air-water interface and in the LB films. The structure change and macroscope morphology of the LB films were confirmed by FT-lR and SEM, respective1y.
In this study, a large-scale direct shear test was performed to evaluate the shear characteristics of the pile-soil interface according to the fines content and confining pressure conditions as a reasonable evaluation method of the pullout resistance performance of pile considering the soil conditions. It was found that the shear stress was greatly generated under the conditions of high normal stress and low fines content. In addition, the maximum shear stress was found to be rather large under the conditions of the same normal stress and fines content, when pile surface had high roughness. The internal friction angle decreased at the pile-soil interface, when the fines content in the ground increased. On the other hand, the cohesion decreased under the condition of high fines content. And the internal friction angle and cohesion were large regardless of the fines content in the model ground, when the roughness of the pile surface was high.

Interface formation between $12CaO{\cdot}7Al_2O_3(C12A7:e^-)$ and Alq3 was investigated using in-situ ultra-violet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The work function and vacuum level shift of $C12A7:e^-$ were change by different surface treatment from 2.6eV to 4.2eV. Also vacuum level shift $(\Delta)$ at the interface were from +0.3eV to -0.3eV.
The phase transition and the surface and interface morphologies of $TiSi_2$ formed on atomically clean Si substrates are investigated. 200$\AA$ Ti and 400$\AA$ Si films on Si(ll1) have been codeposited at elevated temperatures (400~$800^{\circ}C$) in ultrahigh vacuum. The phase transition of TiSiL is characterized with using XRD. The results distinguish the formation of the C49 and C54 crystalline titanium silicides. The surface and interface morphologies of titanium silicides have been examined with SEM and TEM. A relatively smootb surface is observed for the C49 phase while a rough surface and interface are observed for C54 phase. The islanding of the C54 phase becomes severe at high temperature ($800^{\circ}C$). Islands of TiSiL have been observed at temperatures above $700^{\circ}C$ but no islands are observed at temperatures below $600^{\circ}C$. For films deposited at $400^{\circ}C$ and 500%. weak XRD peaks corresponding to TiSi were observed and TEM micrographs exhibited small crystalline regions of titanium silicide at the interface.
