  • Titanium and its alloy have been widely used in dental implant and orthopedic prostheses. Electrochemical characteristics of dental implant in the various simulated body fluids have been researched by using electrochemical methods. Ti-6Al-4V alloy implant was used for corrosion test in 0.9% NaCl, artificial saliva and simulated body fluids. The surface morphology was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The electrochemical stability was investigated using potentiosat (EG&G Co, 263A). The corrosion surface was observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). From the results of potentiodynamic test in various solution, the current density of implant tested in SBF and AS solution was lower than that of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution. From the results of passive film stability test, the variation of current density at constant 250 mV showed the consistent with time in the case of implant tested in SBF and AS solution, whereas, the current density at constant 250mV in the case of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution showed higher compared to SBF and AS solution as time increased. From the results of cyclic potentiodynamic test, the pitting potential and |$E_{pit}\;-\;E_{corr}$| of implant tested in SBF and AS solution were higher than those of implant tested in 0.9% NaCl solution.

  • The present paper proposes a coupled volume-of-fluid (VOF) and level-set (LS) method for simulating incompressible two-phase flows that include surface tension effects. The interface of two fluids and its motion are represented by a VOF method designed using high-resolution differencing schemes. This hybrid method couples the VOF method with an LS distancing algorithm in an explicit way to improve the calculation of the normal and curvature of the interface. It is developed based on a rather simple algorithm to be efficient for various practical applications. The accuracy and convergence properties of the method are verified in a simulation of a single gas bubble rising in a three-dimensional flow with a large density ratio.

  • The interface between two different materials in the insulation systems is the weak-link in the underground power transmission systems, In this paper, Optimum conditions of the interface between Epoxy and EPDM is studied. The variation factor condition of interface is roughness of surface, spreading of oils, interfacial pressure and temperature. The breakdown times under the constant voltage below the breakdown voltage were also gained. The breakdown voltage at the after laying time equivalent to is calculated by the V-t characteristic and the inverse power law. When this is done, the characteristic life exponent n is used and the long time breakdown voltage can be evaluated.

  • Stress intensity factors for the circumferential surface crack of a long composite cylinder under torsion is investigated. The problem is formulated as a singular integral equation of the first kind with a Cauchy type kernel using the integral transform technique. The mode III stress intensity factors at the crack tips are presented when (a) the inner crack tip is away from the interface and (b) the inner crack tip is at the interface.

  • This paper deals with the singular stresses developed in a polymer coating on concrete due to temperature change. The boundary element method is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. Numerical results show that very large stress gradients are present at the interface comer and such stress singularity dominates a very small region relative to layer thickness. Since the exceedingly large stresses at the interface corner cannot be borne by coating materials, local yielding or delamination can occur in the vicinity of free surface.

  • Friction stir welding(FSW) was studied using commercial tool, FLOW-3D. The purpose of this study is to suggest a method to apply frictional heat in Computational fluid dynamics(CFD) analysis. Cylindrical tool shape was used, and the interface cells between tool surface and workpiece were tracked by its geometrical relations in order to consider the frictional heat in FSW. After tracking the interface cells, average area concept was used to calculate the frictional heat, which is related to interface area. Also three-dimensional heat source and visco-plastic flow were modeled. The frictional heat generation rate calculated numerically from the suggested algorithm was validated with the analytical solution. The numerical solution was well matched with the analytical solution, and the maximum percentage of error was around 3%.

  • The Joining of copper rod and zirconia tube was carried out in Ar gas atmosphere. There are two type of the joining. The one is the reaction bond consisting of Cu and zirconia was dominated by surface reaction wi th a undetctable very thin layer. It was found that copper elements were diffused to zirconia side, but that most of Z $r^{4+}$ ions were not diffused to copper side. This result means application of a DC voltage to migrate oxygen to the copper/zirconia interface can oxidize metal at the copper /zirconia interface, and the bonding reaction between zirconia and copper oxide may occur. The other is the reaction bonding was dominated by interdiffusion with a very thick interface layer. This result means application of a DC voltage can reduce zirconia at the interface. The bonding reaction is to be an alloying between Zr and Cr.

  • This paper presents an analysis of thermal stress induced along the interface between a polymeric coating layer and a steel substrate as a result of uniform temperature change. The epoxy layer is assumed to be a linear viscoelastic material and to be theromorheologically simple. The viscoelastic boundary element method is employed to investigate the behavior of interface stresses. The numerical results exhibit relaxation of interface stresses and large stress gradients, which are observed in the vicinity of the free surface. Since the exceedingly large stresses cannot be borne by the polymeric coating layer, local cracking or delamination can occur at the interface corner.

  • By focusing on the resonant vibration mode of soil-underground structure system, this paper obtained dynamic soil stiffness and easy sliding conditions at the interface between soil and underground structure. Multi-step method is employed to isolate two primary causes of soil-structure interaction. Mohr-Coulomb criterion is used to determine the threshold level of the sliding. To find out the conditions the interface slides easily, parametric studies are performed about the factors governing sliding, which are the size and location of underground structures, ground condition, the configuration of surface deposit and interface friction coefficients.

  • Free surface impinging jet on a moving plate, which is applicable to cooling of hot metals in a steel-making process, is investigated numerically by solving the Navier-Stokes equations in the liquid and gas phases. The free surface of liquid-gas interface is tracked by a level-set method which is improved by incorporating the ghost fluid approach based on a sharp-interface representation. The method is further improved by employing a nonequilibrium $\kappa-\varepsilon$ turbulence model including the effect of low Reynolds number. The computations are made to investigate the effects of the nozzle pitch, moving velocity of plate and jet velocity on the interfacial motion and the associated flow and temperature fields.
