Detection of a Surface-Breaking Crack Using the Surface Wave of a Laser Ultrasound (레이저 초음파의 표면파를 이용한 표면결함 측정)

  • A laser ultrasonic inspection system is a non-contact inspection device which generates and measures ultrasounds by using laser beams. A laser ultrasonic inspection system provides a high measurement resolution because the ultrasonic signal generated by a pulse laser beam has a wide-band spectrum and the ultrasonic signal is measured from a small focused spot of a measuring laser beam. In this paper, we have investigated the detection techniques of a surface-breaking crack by using the laser ultrasonic surface waves. A crack acts as a low pass filter whose cut-off frequency is lowered in proportion to the depth of a crack. And, the center frequency value of a spectrum is decreased in proportion to the depth of a crack. In this paper, we extracted the crack information by using the frequency attenuation from the normalized transfer function spectrum of a surface-breaking crack. Also, we effectively measured the crack depth by using the decreasing value of the center frequency from a crack passed ultrasonic signal. The proposed measuring techniques of crack depths provided more precise information than the amplitude measuring technique.

  • A cell is the product of a long period of evolution and can be represented as an optimized system (homeostasis). Stimuli from the outside environment are received by sensory apparatus on the surface of the cell and transferred through complicated pathways and eventually regulate gene expression. These signals affect cell physiology, growth, and development, and the interaction among genes in the signal transduction pathway is a critical part of the regulation. In this study, the interactions of deletion mutants and overexpression of the extracopies of the genes were used to understand their relationships to each other. Also, green fluorescent protein (GFP reporter gene) was fused to the regulatory genes to elucidate their interactions. Cooverexpression of the two genes in extracopy plasmids suggested that patS acts at the downstream of hetR in the regulatory network. The experiments using gfp fusion in different genetic background cells also indicated the epistasis relationships between the two genes. A model describing the regulatory network that controls cell development is presented.

Luminescence of $Eu^{3+}$ and $Sm^{3+}$ Doped Potassium Tungstate Phosphor

  • The luminescent properties of $Eu^{3+}$ and $Sm^{3+}$ doped potassium tungstate phosphor are investigated. The $K_{4-3x}(WO_4)_2:Eu^{3+}\;_x,Sm^{3+}\;_y$ phosphor is produced by firing the mixed precursors, followed by re-firing with a flux. The re-firing process results in the defect-free surface and uniform growth of the particles. The strong absorption in the region of ultra violet light is observed due to the 4f-4f electron transitions of the $Eu^{3+}$ and $Sm^{3+}$ ions. The doping concentration of europium into potassium tungstate is relatively high, compared to other host materials. It is revealed that the crystal structure is a monoclinic with space group, C2/c. This crystal structure facilitated the $Eu^{3+}$ ions to be located with the Eu-Eu distance larger than 5 ${\AA}$ so that concentration quenching does not occur even at high doping concentration. The excitation spectrum could be adjusted by the introduction of the samarium. A small amount of the $Sm^{3+}$ ions that acts as a sensitizer increases the energy absorption peak around 405 nm.

  • FESWMS-2DH developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation based on two-dimensional shallow water wave equation is used in this study to simulate the flow characteristecs of the river reach between Chamsil and Shingok submerged weirs, which acts as a tidal river under low flow conditions. The model uses Galerkin F.E.M and meshes are composed of triangular or quadrangular elements. The model shows accurate and stable results concerning mass conservation as well as velocity distribution and water surface elevation. The results obtained in the present study may provide useful informations on the planning of river pollution abatement measures and artificial structures.

  • Mono-crystalline silicon solar cell is fabricated by using alkali metals. These alkali metal, used in wet etching process, must be removed for the high efficiency solar cell. As wet etching process has been adapted due to its low cost. But lots of alkali metals like potassium remains on the silicon surface and acts as impurities. To remove these alkali metals many of cleaning process have to be applied when solar cell manufacturing process. In terms of alkali metal removal, modified etchant solution is required for concise cleaning process. In this paper ethylenediamine was used and proposed for the substituion of postassium hydroxide.

  • Insulin-like growth factor binding protein 5 (IGFBP-5) plays an important role in controlling cell survival, differentiation and apoptosis. Apoptosis can be induced by an extrinsic pathway involving the ligand-mediated activation of death receptors such as tumor necrosis factor receptor 1 (TNFR1). To determine whether IGFBP-5 and TNFR1 interact as members of the same apoptosis pathway, recombinant IGFBP-5 and TNFR1 were isolated. The expression and purification of the full-length TNFR1 and truncated IGFBP-5 proteins were successfully performed in E. coli. The binding of both IGFBP-5 and TNFR1 proteins was detected by surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy (BIAcore), fluorescence measurement, electron microscopy, and size-exclusion column (SEC) chromatography. IGFBP-5 indeed binds to TNFR1 with an apparent $K_D$ of 9 nM. After measuring the fluorescence emission spectra of purified IGFBP-5 and TNFR1, it was found that the tight interaction of these proteins is accompanied by significant conformational changes of one or both. These results indicate that IGFBP-5 acts potently as a novel ligand for TNFR1.

Molecular Cloning and Recombinant Expression of the Long Form of Leptin Receptor (Ob-Rb) cDNA as Isolated from Rat Spleen

  • Leptin is a circulating non-glycosylated protein that is mainly produced in adipocytes. Leptin acts in the brain to regulate food intake and energy expenditure. Previously we reported our success in the isolation of a partial cDNA of the long form of the leptin receptor, OB-Rb, from rat spleen, and showed that leptin might also play a role in peripheral immune organs. In the present study, for the first time, the complete coding region of OB-Rb cDNA was cloned from rat splenocytes, and its nucleotide sequence was determined. The cDNA was then further expressed in E. coli and mammalian cells, thereby confirming the functional integrity of this receptor. Prokaryotically overexpressed OB-R protein was then used as an immunizing antigen in BALE/c mice to produce leptin receptor-specific antibodies. By using them, we confirmed the cell surface expression of OB-Rb in transfected CHO cells. It is our belief that the reagents, as produced in this study, will be of great use in further studies of the biological role of rat leptin.

Liquid Cooling System Using Planar ECF Pump for Electronic Devices (평면형 ECF 펌프를 이용한 전자기기 액체냉각 시스템)

  • This paper presents a liquid cooling concept for heat rejection of high power electronic devices existing in notebook computers etc. The design, fabrication, and performance of the planar ECF pump and farced-liquid cooling system are summarized. The electro-conjugate fluid (ECF) is a kind of dielectric and functional fluids, which generates jet flows (ECF-jets) by applying static electric field through a pair of rod-like electrodes. The ECF-jet directly acts on the working fluid, so the proposed planar ECF pump needs no moving part, produces no vibration and noise. The planar ECF pump, consists of a pump housing and electrode substrate, achieves maximum flow rate and output pressure of $5.5\;cm^3/s$ and 7.2 kPa, respectively, at an applied voltage of 2.0 kV. The farced-liquid cooling system, constructed with the planar ECF pump, liquid-cooled heat sink and thermal test chip, removes input power up to 80 W keeping the chip surface temperature below $70\;^{\circ}C$. The experimental results demonstrate that the feasibility of forced-liquid cooling system using ECF is confirmed as an advanced cooling solution on the next-generation high power electronic devices.

Partial Purification and Characterization of a Glycoprotein Factor from Fresh Ginseng (수삼으로부터 당단백질 인자의 부분정제와 특성연구)

  • The aqueous extract of fresh ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) contains a macromolecular fraction that showed mitogenic and co-mitogenic activities in human peripheral blood lymphocytes. Purification of the crude extract by size (ultrafiltration, Sephadex G-200) and charge (DEAE-cellulose, DEAE-Sepharose) yielded a semi.purified fraction (DS-3). This fraction contains at least three subgroups of anionic macromolecules with apparent molecular weight greater than 600 kilodaltons. It is a glycoprotein with a large amount of glucuronic acid. It acts as a mitogen in both T and B cells of human peripheral blood lymphocytes. It could also potentiate the mitogenic action of Concanavalin A in lymphocyte T cells. Such potentiation is not due to increased binding of Concanavalin A to the cell surface. Its mitogenic and co-mitogenic effects do depend on the presence of extracellular Ca2+.

A Domain Action Classification Model Using Conditional Random Fields (Conditional Random Fields를 이용한 영역 행위 분류 모델)

  • In a goal-oriented dialogue, speakers' intentions can be represented by domain actions that consist of pairs of a speech act and a concept sequence. Therefore, if we plan to implement an intelligent dialogue system, it is very important to correctly infer the domain actions from surface utterances. In this paper, we propose a statistical model to determine speech acts and concept sequences using conditional random fields at the same time. To avoid biased learning problems, the proposed model uses low-level linguistic features such as lexicals and parts-of-speech. Then, it filters out uninformative features using the chi-square statistic. In the experiments in a schedule arrangement domain, the proposed system showed good performances (the precision of 93.0% on speech act classification and the precision of 90.2% on concept sequence classification).
