  • In this study, the effects of silver treatment and activation on the physical and chemical properties of spherical activated carbon (SAC) were studied. The textural properties of SAC were characterized by BET surface area, XRD, SEM, iodine adsorption, strength intensity, pressure drop and antibacterial effects. BET surface areas of SACs decreased with an increase of the amount of PR before and after activation, and the BET surface areas of SACs were found to be about 2-3 times the size of those before activation. The XRD patterns showed their existing state as stable Ag crystals and carbon structure. The Ag particles are seaweedlike and uniform, being approximately 5-10 μm in size deposited on the surface of activated carbon. All of the samples had much more iodine adsorption capability after activation than before activation. The strength values of SACs increased with an increase of the amount of PR, and there was a smaller drop in the strength values of SACs with silver treatment than with non-silver treatment after activation. The Ag-SAC composites showed strong antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli (E. Coli).

  • The effects of blasting and acidic treatment on the corrosion characteristics of dental implant fabricated with Cp-Ti and Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been researched by using electrochemical methods. The fabricated implants were cleaned and sandblasted by $Al_2O_3$ powder and then acidic treatment was carried out in nitric acid solution. The surface morphology were observed using scanning electron microscope. The corrosion behaviors were investigated using potentiosat and EIS in 0.9% NaCl solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The potentio-dynamic test in 0.9% NaCl indicated that the corrosion potential of blasting and acidic treated implant was lower than that of non treated implant, but current density was higher than that of non treated implant. From the cyclic potentiodynamic test results of Ti implant, the passivation current density of blasting and acidic treated implant slightly higher than that of non treated implant. From A.C. impedance test results in 0.9% NaCl solution, polarization resistance($R_p$) value of blasting and acidic treated implant was lower than that of non treated implant. In case of blasting and acidic treated implant surface, the pits were observed in valley and crest of implant surface.

  • Four activated carbons were produced by two-stage process as followings; semi-carbonization of indigenous biomass waste, i.e. cotton stalks, followed by chemical activation with KOH under various activation temperatures and chemical ratios of KOH to semi-carbonized cotton stalks (CCS). The surface area, total pore volume and average pore diameter were evaluated by $N_2$-adsorption at 77 K. The surface morphology and oxygen functional groups were determined by SEM and FTIR, respectively. Batch equilibrium and kinetic studies were carried out by using a basic dye, methylene blue as a probe molecule to evaluate the adsorption capacity and mechanism over the produced carbons. The obtained activated carbon (CCS-1K800) exhibited highly microporous structure with high surface area of 950 $m^2/g$, total pore volume of 0.423 $cm^3/g$ and average pore diameter of 17.8 ${\AA}$. The isotherm data fitted well to the Langmuir isotherm with monolayer adsorption capacity of 222 mg/g for CCS-1K800. The kinetic data obtained at different concentrations were analyzed using a pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order and intraparticle diffusion equations. The pseudo-second-order model fitted better for kinetic removal of MB dye. The results indicate that such laboratory carbons could be employed as low cost alternative to commercial carbons in wastewater treatment.

  • Laser induced surface activation (LISA) technology requires refined selection of process variables to fabricate conductive microcircuits on a general polymer material. Among the process variables, laser mode is one of the crucial factors to make a reliable conductor pattern. Here we compare the continuous wave (CW) laser mode with the pulse wave (PW) laser mode through determination of the surface roughness and circuit accuracy. In the CW laser mode, the surface roughness is pronounced during the implementation of the conductive circuit, which results in uneven plating. In the PW laser mode, the surface is relatively smooth and uniform, and the formed conductive circuit layer has few defects with excellent adhesion to the polymer material. As a result of a change of laser mode from CW to PW, the value of Ra of the polymer material decreases from 0.6 ㎛ to 0.2 ㎛; the value of Ra after the plating process decreases from 0.8 ㎛ to 0.4 ㎛, and a tight bonding force between the polymer source material and the conductive copper plating layer is achieved. In conclusion, this study shows that the PW laser process yields an excellent conductive circuit on a polymeric material.

  • The hydrogen plasma treatment of silicon wafers in the reactive ion-etching mode was studied for the application to silicon-on-insulator wafers which were prepared using the wafer bonding technique. The chemical reactions of hydrogen plasma with surface were used for both surface activation and removal of surface contaminants. As a result of exposure of silicon wafers to the plasma, an active oxide layer was found on the surface. This layer was rendered hydrophilic. The surface roughness and morphology were examined as functions of the plasma exposing time and power. In addition, the surface became smoother with the shorter plasma exposing time and power. The value of initial surface energy estimated by the crack propagation method was 506 mJ/㎡, which was up to about three times higher as compared to the case of conventional direct using the wet RCA cleaning method.
