Right-Turn Vehicle Supplementary Signal Improvement at Intersections (교차로 우회전 차량 보조등 개선)

  • This study aims to suggest a reasonable signal operation method for right-turn traffic management. It was found that the right-turn vehicle supplementary signal is currently operated without clear regulations or criteria. It was also analyzed that right-turn supplementary signals are used without consistency, there is a risk of traffic accidents due to the discordance between supplementary signals and traffic signals of forward vehicles, there is a lack of basis for prohibition of a right turn when right-turn vehicle's supplementary signal is red and the flashing red signal is used in a different sense from the law. In order to see the effect of the installed right-turn vehicle supplementary signals on traffic signal violation, a field investigation was conducted. As the result, there was a high proportion of signal violation on the approach lane with right-turn supplementary signals and this means that right-turn supplementary signals hardly influenced the reduction in proportion of signal violation during a right turn. Additionally, a survey was carried out to see if there were differences in driver's interpretation of traffic signals depending on the installation of right-turn supplementary signals. As the result of the survey, there were no differences in interpretation of traffic signals depending on the installation of right-turn supplementary signals or the types of right-turn supplementary signals. A right turn when the signal was red did not lead to serious traffic accidents, so it is thought that there should be a careful consideration of a total ban on a right turn when the signal is red, in order to prevent driver's confusion due to the change of the signal system. Unless there is a disturbance to cars and pedestrians after a temporary stop when the signal is red, there is a need to specify that vehicles must stop temporarily in the Road Traffic Act to facilitate a right turn. What this study finally suggested is to use tri-colored arrow signals for right-turn car supplementary signals to convey a signal to a driver clearly.

A Comparison Study of Driver's Responsive Action by Using the Traffic Light Change Anticipation (교통 예비점멸등 사용에 따른 운전자 행동반응 비교)

  • This study preformed a research about the traffic signal light that is adding supplementary green light to prevent driver's cognitive errors and plan safe driving through improving visual cognitivity of present traffic signal light. The result of comparing the present traffic signal light(three colors, four colors) with the traffic signal light(three colors, four colors) adding supplementary green light through car simulator has a significant difference. This result shows possibility that the traffic signal light adding supplementary green light can contribute in safety driving at a point that the traffic signal light advances a point of braking time when drivers didn't recognize by themselves. The findings in this study ca say that there is the meaning in showing a actual application possibility of this study finding by investigating a action of subjective response the moment compare driver's actual response.

Technical Status of LED Traffic Signals made in Korea (국내의 LED 교통신호등의 기술현황 분석연구)

  • Concerning Korean energy consumption, 20% of the total electrical energy (96% is now exported) is consumed in lighting area. Accordingly, it is one of the most important governmental policies to efficiently utilize electricity due to development and application of high-efficiency lighting equipment. In Korea, widely-built traffic signals employ an incandescent and are of 100W/300 mm, and 280,080set/801,932lamps have been installed and operated by 1999. Of them, 58%(161,181set), 25%(69,655set) and 18%(49,244set) correspond to traffic signals, pedestrian signals and other supplementary signals respectively. It was estimated that electrical energy consumed 28MW instantaneously, 245GWH annually. On the other hand, the LED traffic signal is expected to be a future traffic signal since if traffic signals are replaced by LEDs, energy saving effect of 85% and drop of 75% in maintenance fee will be obtained. In this paper, the performance and characteristics of many LED traffic signals made in Korea are summarized in order to reform Korean standard of LED traffic signals.
