  • Viscous solutions of supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate normal to the flow are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. The jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. Among others, the dominant parameters are the ratio of the nozzle exit pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle exit plane and the impinging plane. In the present study, the nozzle contour and the pressure ratio are held fixed, while the jet impinging distance is varied to illuminate the characteristics of the jet plume with the distance. As the plate is placed close to the nozzle at 3D high, the computed wall pressure at or near the jet center oscillates with large amplitude with respect to the mean value. Here D is the nozzle exit diameter. The amplitude of wall pressure fluctuations subsides as the distance increases, but the maximum mean pressure level at the plate is achieved when the distance is about 4D high. The frequency of the wall pressure is estimated at 6.0 kHz, 9.3 kHz, and 10.0 kHz as the impinging distance varies from 3D, 4D, to 6D, respectively.

  • Hysteresis phenomena in fluid flow systems are frequently encountered in many industrial and engineering applications and mainly appear during the transient processes of change of the pressure ratio. Shock-containing flow field in supersonic nozzles is typically subject to such hysteresis phenomena, but associated flow physics is not yet understood well. In the present study, experimental work has been carried out to investigate supersonic nozzle flows during the transient processes of change in the nozzle pressure ratio. Time-dependent surface wall pressures were measured by a multiple of pressure transducers and the flow field was visualized using a nano-spark Schlieren optical method. The results obtained show that the hysteresis phenomenon is strongly dependent on the nozzle geometry as well as the time scale of the change of pressure ratio.

  • Thrust vector control(TVC) is the method which generates the side force and moment by controlling the exhausting gas directly from the supersonic nozzle to change the trajectory of a missile quickly. In this paper, performance study on the tapered ramp tabs asymmetrically installed in the supersonic nozzle exhaust for the thurst vector control has been carried out using the supersonic cold flow system. To study the shock wave structure and location of the oblique shock wave produced by the ramp tab, the flow field visualization using the schlieren system is conducted. This paper provides the thrust spoilage, three directional forces and moments and distribution of surface pressure on the region enclosed by the tapered ramp tabs.

  • Experiments were performed to investigate the flow characteristics of a partial admission supersonic turbine depending on the relative positions of nozzle and cascade. The flow was visualized by a Schlieren system. The static pressures at the turbine cascade inlet, passage and outlet were measured by pressure transducers. Highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions of the supersonic turbine were observed by the experiments. And the flow characteristics in the supersonic turbine as the relative positions were observed.

  • Effects of the nozzle wall angles on the supersonic flow field in a thrust optimized nozzle were numerically investigated. The combustor and operating condition of 30-tonf rocket engine was selected to study the optimum nozzle shape. The nozzle flow of combustion products was realized by the shifting equilibrium calculation for the propellant of kerosene-LOx. The change of nozzle wall angles induced different developing patterns of the internal and secondary shock wave. The optimum nozzle was obtained when the internal shock was in a specific position at the nozzle outlet. The nozzle wall angles of the optimum nozzle were very similar to those of the optimum nozzle which does not consider the shock wave.

  • An experimental study on the micro-supersonic jet flow fields has been carried out. A sonic nozzle of 440 ${\mu}m$-exit diameter and a Laval nozzle of 800 ${\mu}m$ exit diameter with the nozzle exit Mach number 2.0 were fabricated by stretching a micro Pyrex glass tube for the present experiments. Schlieren flow visualization and Pitot pressure distribution of the jet flow field were obtained. Representative characteristics of the jet flow fields such as, supersonic length, jet core length, similarity of the velocity field, and jet spreading rates, have been observed. All the results were compared to previous observations of larger supersonic jets of higher Reynolds numbers, and it was found that overall characteristics of the micro supersonic jet are qualitatively similar as those of the higher Reynolds number jets, except the jet core length and the jet spreading rate.

  • When supersonic jet impinges on wall from the nozzle, complex flow pattern appears such as Mach disc, expansion fan, and jet boundary. The numerical computation of this supersonic jet is important on flame deflecctor design for launch space especially. In this paper, we analyzed supersonic jet structure impinging on deflector wall using three dimensional steady and unsteady compressible equation and showed temperature and pressure distribution on the wall surface. As a result, some dominant factors of jet flows are discussed for conceptual design of flame deflector.

  • Supersonic jet flow has been applied to many various industrial applications of manufacturing fields. Such a supersonic jet is generally classified by three flow patterns, depending on the flow state at nozzle exit, that is, under-, correctly- and over-expanded flows. Of these three flows, the correctly-expanded supersonic jet is most frequently used since it provides a maximum performance of a flow device. However detailed information on what conditions are the Jet correctly expanded at the exit of nozzle is not well known. In the current study, computations are applied to the axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations. The design Mach number used are 2.0,1.2 and 2.6. The computational results obtained are compared with the previous experimental ones. A theoretical analysis is conducted to predict the major features of the correctly-expanded jet. The results show that the jet core length is increased as Mach number is increased.

  • The present study addresses an experimental investigations of the near field flow structures of supersonic, dual, coaxial, swirl jet. The swirl stream is discharged from the secondary annular nozzle and the primary inner nozzle provides the sonic and supersonic free jets. The interactions between the secondary swirl and inner soni $c^ersonic jets are quantified by a fine pilot impact and static pressure measurements and are visualized by using a shadowgraph optical method. The pressure ratios of the secondary swirl and primary soni $c^ersonic jets are varied below 7.0. Experiments are conducted to investigate the effects of the secondary swirl stream on the primary sonic and supersonic jets, compared with the secondary stream of no swirl. The results show that the presence of annular swirl stream causes the Mach disk to move more downstream, with the increased diameter, and remarkably reduces the fluctuations of the impact pressures in the supersonic dual coaxial jet, compared with the case of the secondary annular stream of no swirl.swirl.
