  • This work is experimental study about a nozzle part in the aerodynamic igniter using only compressible gas. In study, constructions of the aerodynamic igniter using a supersonic nozzle and an aerospike nozzle have been introduced, and experimental results(mainly max. heating temperature characteristics) have been presented. Using of the supersonic nozzle leads to faster and higher temperature in same mass flow, and the aerospike nozzle works in wide variable range of pressure.

  • In this paper, a small supersonic wind tunnel is designed and built to study the flow characteristics of a supersonic impulse turbine cascade. The flow is visualized by means of a single pass Schlieren system. The supersonic cascade with 2-dimensional supersonic nozzle is tested for various gaps between the nozzle and cascade. By the experiment, the flow is visualized and static pressure of the cascade was measured. And highly complicated flow patterns including shocks, nozzle-cascade interaction and shock boundary layer interactions, flow characteristics of the supersonic turbine are observed.

  • Two-dimensional blow-down type supersonic wind tunnel was designed and built to investigate the transient behavior of the startup of a supersonic flow from rest. The contour of the divergent part of the nozzle was determined by the MOC calculation. The converging part of the nozzle, upstream of fille throat was contoured to make the flow uniform at the throat. The flow characteristics of the steady supersonic condition were visualized using the high-speed schlieren photography. The Mach number was evaluated from the oblique shock wave angle on a sharp wedge with halt angle of 5 degree. The measured Mach number was 2.4 and was slightly less than the value predicted by the design calculation. The initial transient behavior of the nozzle was recorded by a high-speed digital video camera with schlieren technique. The measured transition time from standstill to a steady supersonic flow was estimated by analyzing the serial images. Typical transition time was approximately 0.1sec.

  • The supersonic impinging jet has been extensively applied to rocket launching system, gas jet cutting control, gas turbine blade cooling, etc. In such applications, wall temperature of an object on which supersonic jet impinges is a very important factor to determine the performance and life of the device. However, wall temperature data of supersonic impinging jets are not enough to data. The present study describes an experimental work to measure the wall temperatures of a vertical flat plate on which supersonic, dual, coaxial jet impinges. An Infrared camera is employed to measure the wall temperature distribution on the impinging plate. The pressure ratio of the jet is varied to obtain the supersonic jets in the range of over-expanded to moderately under-expanded conditions at the exit of coaxial nozzle. The distance between the coaxial nozzle and the flat plate was also varied. The coaxial jet flows are visualized using a Shadow optical method. The results show that the wall temperature distribution of the impinging plate is strongly dependent on the jet pressure ratio and the distance between the nozzle and plate.

  • The present paper describes an experimental work to investigate a transonic resonance in supersonic jet that is discharged from a convergent-divergent nozzle. When the nozzle m: at low nozzle pressure ratios, the shock occurs within the divergent section of the nozzle. The transonic resonance of a jet flow is generated by an emission of strong acoustic tones due to the unsteadiness of the shock. A Schlieren optical system is used to visualize the supersonic jet flow In order to specify the flow resonance of a jet, acoustic measurements are performed to obtain noise spectra. The acoustic characteristics of transonic resonace are compared with those of screech tones. The results obtained show that unlike screech frequency, the transonic reso- nace frequency somewhat increases with increasing the nozzle pressure ratio.

  • This paper investigates CFD investigation on single phase supersonic nozzle flow and 2-phase subson ic flow prior to rocket nozzle supersonic 2-phase flow with water injection within the flame deflector. Numerical results of supersonic nozzle single phase flow showed no notable unrealistic behavior as it captures the usual shock cell structures. Three-dimensional 2-phase flow analysis has also been performed to verify whether the approach can grab the droplet behavior during cooling by water injection. It is expected these basic studies will enhance the cooling problem analysis of supersonic 2-phase rocket plume in the future.

  • Organic Rankine Cycle is widely used to convert the low-grade thermal energy to the electrical energy. However, usually available thermal energy is not supplied constantly. This makes hard to use positive displacement expanders. Hence, turbo-expander has merits to apply as an expander in ORC because it can operate well off-design points even though the mass flowrate is fluctuated. The thermal energy fluctuation causes the turbo-expander to operate in partial admission. In addition, supersonic nozzles are required so that the partially admitted turbine operates efficiently. In this study, R245fa was chosen as a working fluid of ORC. A design method and an analysis technique of supersonic nozzle based on R245fa were developed. The shape of the nozzle was designed by the characteristic method. The thermal properties within the nozzle were estimated and the predicted results were agreed well with the computed results.

  • The characteristics of dual coaxial jet which composed of inner supersonic nozzle of 26500 in constant expansion rate with 1.91 design Mach number and outer converging one with $40^{\circ}$ converging angle with the variation of outer nozzle stagnation pressures are experimentally investigated in this paper. In which the stagnation pressure for the inner supersonic nozzle is 750kPa thus, the inner jet leaving the nozzle is slightly underexpanded. The plenum pressures of outer nozzle are varied from 200 to 600kPa. Flow visualizations by shadowgraph method, impact pressure and centerline static pressure measurements of dual coaxial jet are presented. The results show that the presence of outer jet affects significantly the structures and pressure distributions of inner jet. And outer jet causes Mach disk which does not appear for the case of single jet stream. As the stagnation pressure of outer jet increases, impact pressure undulation is severe, but the average impact pressure keeps high far downstream.

  • A test section of a supersonic wind tunnel was designed for the analysis of flow characteristics over a backward-facing step with Mach 1.0 slot injection in a supersonic flow of Mach 2.5. The cavity flow of a high-speed vehicle is very complex at supersonic speed, so it is necessary to do experiments using supersonic wind tunnels to verify numerical analysis methods. The previous 2D symmetrical nozzle was replaced with an asymmetrical nozzle. The inviscid nozzle contour was designed using Method of Characteristics (MOC), and the boundary layer thickness correction was reflected by experimental data from the wind tunnel. The results were compared with a CFD analysis. The PID control system was changed to be based on the change of tank pressure. This improved the control efficiency, and the run times of supersonic flow increased by about 1 second. The flow characteristics over a backward facing step with slot injection were visualized by a Schlieren device. This equipment will be used for an experimental study of the film cooling effectiveness over a cavity with various velocities, mass flows, and temperatures.

  • Supersonic coaxial, axisymmetric, jets issuing from various kinds of dual coaxial nozzles were experimentally investigated. Four different kinds of coaxial, dual nozzles were employed to characterize the major features of the supersonic, coaxial, dual jets. Two convergent-divergent supersonic nozzles with an impinging angle in the jet axis of the annular jets were designed to have the Mach number 2.0 and used to compare the coaxial jet flows with those discharging from two sonic nozzles. The primary pressure ratio was changed in the range from 4.0 to 10.0 and the assistant jet ratio from 1.0 to 4.0. The results obtained show that the assistant jets from the annular nozzle affect the coaxial jet flows and an increase of both the primary jet pressure ratio and assistant jet pressure ratio produces longer supersonic length of the dual, coaxial jet.
