A dynamic model of a water heater system heated by a heat pump was developed. The water heater system was composed of heat pump and hot water reservoirs. Finite volume method (FVM) was applied to describe the heat exchangers. A new constraint on electronic expansion valve (EEV) or thermostatic expansion valve (TXV) that can control superheat after the evaporator was developed. Dynamic performances were evaluated for various sizes of the reservoir. In order to compare those performances, time scale was normalized by time constant representing the characteristics of reservoir size. Time constant was determined from quasi steady-state simulation of the system. From the simulation, the size of the water heater reservoir was found to have a large influence on the transient performance of the sys- tem. Therefore, the optimization of the reservoir size is needed in a design process.

In nucleate boiling, bubbles are created by the expansion of entrapped gas or vapor at small cavities in the surface of heat transfer. Namely, surface roughness is the important factor of heat transfer. This paper deals with the characteristics of boiling curve according to surface roughness. Freon-113 is used as the experimental fluid. The results are as follows; 1. In the case of the same as "q=C$\Delta$T$^{n}$ ", the lower numberical index "n", the larger heat transfer coefficient and the lower wall superheat "$\Delta$T" is obtained for the rougher surface. 2. In the working of every kind of heat transfer sruface with boiling, improvement of capabilities of heat transfer can be devised by adding suitable roughness on the heat transfer surface. 3. When the metal nets of moderate mesh number are established, the capabilities of heat transfer can be improved in evaporation of liquid in vessels. But in the case that the sucession of bubbles in checked by using the nets which are too tight, the generation of bubbles union decreases critical heat flux. decreases critical heat flux.
Effects of gap sizes (3.9-44.3 mm) of vertical annuli on nucleate pool boiling heat transfer of water at atmospheric pressure have been obtained experimentally. Through the study, tubes of the closed bottom have been investigated and results are compared with those of a single unconfined tube. According to the results, the annular condition gives much increase in heat transfer coefficient at moderate heat fluxes. The increase is much enhanced 3s the gap size decreases. At the same tube wall superheat (about 3.1 K) the heat transfer coefficient for the least gap size (i.e., 3.9 mm) is more than three times greater than that of the unconfined tube. However, deterioration of heat transfer occurs at high heat flux for confined boiling.
The critical heat flux (CHF) levels that occurred due to exponential heat inputs for varying periods to a 1.0-mm diameter horizontal cylinder immersed in various liquids were measured to develop an extended database on the effect of high subcoolings for quasi-steady-state and transient maximum heat fluxes. Two main mechanisms of CHF were found. One mechanism is due to the time lag of the hydrodynamic instability (HI) which starts at steady-state CHF upon fully developed nucleate boiling, and the other mechanism is due to the explosive process of heterogeneous spontaneous nucleation (HSN) which occurs at a certain HSN superheat in originally flooded cavities on the cylinder surface. Steady-state CHFs were divided into three regions for lower, intermediate and higher subcooling at pressures resulting from HI, transition and HSN, respectively. HSN consistently occurred in the transient boiling CHF conditions that correspond to a short period. It was also found that the transient boiling CHFs gradually increased, then rapidly decreased and finally increased again as the period became shorter.
Compressor efficiency must be improved to reduce refrigerator power consumption. In this study, the heat dissipation rate through the compressor housing is increased via gap flow passages between the compressor body and housing. Four types of gap flow passages are considered for achieving the maximum heat-dissipation rate. In addition, thermal analysis is performed to examine the effect of increased heat dissipation rate on the energy efficiency ratio (EER). The results show that the heat dissipation rate, compressor superheat, and compressor EER increased by up to approximately 52%, 3 ℃, and approximately 1%, respectively.
This paper is concerned about the performance of alternative refrigerants of R-502 which has been widely used in transport and low temperature refrigeration. A breadboard heat pump was constructed with counterflow heat exchangers and tested with R-502 and transitional alternatives of R-402A and R-402B and long-term alternatives of R-404A and R-507 to compare the performance of each refrigerant. Measurements were conducted at two different condensing temperatures of $43.3^{\circ}C$ and $52.0^{\circ}C$ and the evaporating temperature was varied over a range from $-25^{\circ}C$ to $-5^{\circ}C$. The evaporator superheat and condenser subcooling were maintained constant at about $5^{\circ}C$ for all tests. Test results showed that all alternative fluids tested in this research work can be used as 'drop-in' fluids to replace R-502 without any major problem. It is also found that in the long run HFC alternatives are to be used due to their favorable environmental characteristics and better performance.
The present research is an experimental study on characteristics of cooling behavior for the adjacent copper blocks with surface roughness or micro-porous coated surface. The experiments were carried out at saturation state or within subcooled states of PF5060. The effects of heater orientation and the intervals between heating surfaces or substrates were investigated under various heat flux conditions. The boiling performance of copper block with micro-porous coated surface was better than that of copper block with surface roughness. It is understood that the bubble sweeping enhances boiling performance for the heaters with inclinations of $\theta=45^{\circ}\;and\;\theta=90^{\circ}$, where as the bubble flattening decreases boiling performance for the heaters with inclinations of $\theta=135^{\circ}\;and\;\theta=180^{\circ}$. In comparison to upper heater and below heater with orientation, the upper heater has lower superheat temperature than the below heater due to the bubble sweeping. It is also found that boiling performance decreases in the case of adjacent double heaters with only 0.2cm substrate interval.
In order to provide the mechanism of nozzle clogging, recovered nozzles for high strength steel grade were examined carefully after continuous casting. The thickness of clogged material in SEN is increased in the following order: from the bottom to the top of the nozzle, upper part of slag line, and the pouring hole. Nozzle clogging material begins to form due the adhesion of metal to nozzle wall, the decarburization, and reduction of oxide in the refractory by Al and Ti in the melt. The reduction of oxide in the refractory by Al and Ti improves the wettability of the melt on the refractory and forms a thin Al-Ti-O layer. Metal containing micro alumina inclusions is solidified on the Al-Ti-O layer, and the solid layer grows due to the heat evolution through the nozzle wall. Thermodynamic calculation has been made for the related reactions. The effect of superheat to the nozzle clogging is discussed on ultra low carbon steel and low carbon steel.
The major cause of compressor failure is the decrease of oil viscosity due to floodback. In most previous researches on the compressor reliability, the relationship between oil circulation rate and performance or oil viscosity has been studied. Another research topic is flow visualization by using a sight glass on the bottom of a compressor sump area and accumulator. Both oil film thickness and oil level through the sight glass should be assessed for compressor reliability if the oil content of the mixture is small and low viscosity raise poor lubrication of pump bearing. In this study, the compressor reliability was assessed by measuring the viscosity of the mixture and calculating oil film thickness. The analysis of the relationship between bottom shell super heat and oil film thickness at heating operation was peformed. It is concluded that bottom shell superheat does not perfectly stand for the mixture's behavior for a low ambient heating operation and oil film thickness can give more detailed and direct criteria for compressor reliability.
It is well known that some key parameters, such as evaporating temperature, refrigerant mass flow rate, face velocity and inlet air temperature, have significant influence on the evaporator performance. However performance studies related to a humid environment have been very scarce. It is demonstrated that the refrigerant mass flow rate, heat flux, water condensing rate and air outlet temperature of the evaporator significantly increase with air inlet relative humidity. As the air inlet relative humidity increases, the latent and total heat transfer rates increase, but the sensible heat transfer rate decreases. The purpose of this study is to provide experimental data on the effect of air inlet relative humidity on the air and refrigerant side pressure drop characteristics for a slit fin-tube heat exchanger. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of inlet refrigerant saturation temperature of 7 $^{\circ}C$ and mass flux varied from 150 to 250 kg/$m^2$s. The condition of air was dry bulb temperature of 27$^{\circ}C$, air Velocity Varied from 0.38 to 1.6 m/s. Experiments Showed that air Velocity decreased 8.7% on 50% of relative humidity 40% of that at degree of superheat of 5$^{\circ}C$, which resulted that pressure drop of air and refrigerant was decreased 20.8 and 8.3% for 50% of relative humidity as compared to 40%, respectively.
