  • 2 K superfluid helium cryogenic system is the crucial component of many large accelerators. When the cryogenic system is operating at 2K@3129Pa, many room-temperature parts are connected to superfluid helium via tubes. Air Leakage in these connections may lead to air contamination of the cryogenic system. Air contamination may cause equipment failure in cryogenic systems and, in extreme cases, render the entire accelerator system inoperable. Helium guard is a technique that guards against air contamination of these sub-atmospheric pressure connections in 2 K superfluid helium cryogenic system. This paper introduces a typical 2 K cryogenic distribution design for large accelerators, and make risk analysis of air contamination. Finally, the analysis of specific leakage points and detailed engineering design are presented, which may be used as a reference when designing of a 2 K superfluid helium cryogenic distribution system.

  • Thermoacoustic oscillations (TAOs) are spontaneous pressure oscillations frequently seen in hydrogen or helium cryogenic systems. Half-open tubes connected to cryogenic fluid with a closed room temperature end have a high potential for oscillation generation. Thermoacoustic oscillations will result in significant pressure fluctuations and additional heat load, endangering the security and stability of the cryogenic system. The goal of this paper is to investigate TAOs in superfluid helium using both theoretical and experimental methods. Five half-open tubes with varied typical inner diameters inserted into superfluid helium were installed in a test cryostat. The onset characteristics of thermoacoustic oscillations were presented and studied. The effect of temperature profile was discussed. Finally, a simple eliminating method was introduced.

  • Low temperature test for half-wave resonator (HWR) cryomodule is performed at the superfluid helium temperature of 2 K. The effective temperature is defined for non-uniform temperature distribution. Helium leak detection techniques are introduced for cryogenic system. Experimental set up is shown to make the low temperature test for the HWR cryomodule. The cooldown procedure of the HWR cryomodule is shown from room temperature to 2 K. The cryomodules is precooled with liquid nitrogen and then liquid helium is supplied to the helium reservoirs and cavities. The pressure of cavity and chamber are monitored as a function of time. The vacuum pressure of the cryomodule is not increased at 2 K, which shows leak-tight in the superfluid helium environment. Static heat load is also measured for the cryomodule at 2.5 K.

  • The particle velocity in superfluid helium (He II) induced by a gas dynamic shock wave impingement onto He II free surface were studied experimentally by using Schlieren visualization method with an ultra-high speed video camera. It is found form visualization results that a dark zone in the immediate vicinity of the vapor-He II interface region is formed because of the high compressibility of He II and is developed toward bulk He II with the flowing-down speed of the vapor-He II interface. The mass velocity behind a transmitted compression shock wave that is equal to the contraction speed of He II amounts to 10 m/sec, the Reynolds number of which reaches $10^{7}$. This fact suggests that the superfluid shock tube facility can be applied to an experimental facility for high Reynols number flow as an alternative to the superfluid wind tunnel.

  • We report the first electric field dependence IR spectra of three cytosine tautomers solvated in helium nanodroplets. By using an electric field dependence on the three lowest energy tautomers of cytosine and ab initio calculations, we are able to measure the vibrational transition moment angles (VTMAs), specifically for the $NH_2$ symmetric stretch (SS) mode in this study, with more precision; thus we have reassigned the previous $NH_2$ (SS) VTMA of 74$^{\circ}$ for the C1 tautomer to 85$^{\circ}$, which the latter is in excellent agreement with the ab initio value. Nonplanarity of the three lowest energy tautomers of cytosine has been investigated by measuring the VTMA of each vibrational mode for the tautomers.

  • The supurfluid shock tube facility has been developed as a versatile tool for experimental research of low-temperature thermo-fluid dynamic phenomena The shock tube is designed to operate with the He II filled test section which is immersed in superfluid helium. The thermo-dynamic phenomena occurred in this facility are measured using pressure transducers, superconductive temperature sensor and visualization method. In this paper, the design and performance of the superfluid shock tube facility and the superconductive temperature sensor is presented.

  • The heavy ion accelerator that will be built in Daejeon utilizes four types of superconducting cavities. Cryomodules holding the superconducting cavities in them supply thermal insulation for cavities operating in 4.3 K or 2.1 K. A Prototype of cryomodule which holds two HWR (Half Wave Resonator) cavities was fabricated and tested. Since the operating temperature of the HWR is 2.1 K, the superfluid helium was generated with warm vacuum pumping system. The cyromodule was successfully cooled down below lambda point temperature of helium and any detectable leak was not observed during the test. The static thermal load at 4.2 K was measured. The result and the experience for the cool-down below lambda point of helium are reported in this paper.

  • We report the first vibrational band assignment of imidazole trimer (IMT) solvated in helium nanodroplets. Several congested vibrational bands of imidazole (IM) clusters were obtained in the frequency region of $3513-3515\;cm^{-1}$ and vibrationally resolved due to the extremely low temperature (0.37 K) and very weak solutesolvent interaction environments of helium droplets. The unambiguous free NH band assignment was achieved with an aid of pick-up oven temperature dependence and vibrational transition moment angle (VTMA) experiments as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The band at $3514.3\;cm^{-1}$ is attributed to the free NH stretching mode of linear IMT clusters, easily formed by the dipole-dipole interactions of IM in ultracold helium nanodroplets.
