  • The relationship between the discharge aging time and the superficial layer thickness of MgO thin film was investigated in an AC PDP. The discharge characteristics of an AC PDP with the various aging time were evaluated by discharge aging experiments. We find the presence of a superficial lay which is related to the discharge characteristics during aging process. The superficial layer of MgO thin film was observed by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). It was found that the superficial layer thickness of MgO was dependent on discharge aging time.

  • Posttraumatic pseudoaneurysm of the superficial temporal artery is very rare and occurs secondary to trauma. Clinical diagnosis is based on past history of trauma and physical examination and can be confirmed by duplex ultrasonogram, digital subtraction angiography, CT and MRI. Ligation of proximal and distal ends of the superficial temporal artery and excision of the pseudoaneurysm has been the standard treatment. Compressive therapy, endovascular coil embolization, percutaneous thrombin injection under ultrasound guidance have been reported as alternative treatment methods. When surgical excision of the superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm is performed, surgeon must be concerned about the anatomical relation between superficial temporal artery and temporal branches of the facial nerve. In this article, we report a rare case of superficial temporal artery pseudoaneurysm with some review of the literatures about anatomical relation between superficial temporal artery and temporal branches of facial nerve.

  • The anatomy and distribution of the superficial temporal vessels are known to follow regular patterns, with few exceptions in previous studies. But these previous studies of the anatomy and distribution of the superficial temporal vessels were based, only on the cadaver studies. Authors evaluated the anatomy of these vessels in the operative field of the living body from December 1997 to June 2001, The superficial temporal vessels were surgically exposed from the zygomatic arch extending to the superior temporal line through a preauricular incision in 18 patients(20 cases), who underwent reconstructive surgery using these vessels in the operative field. The authors measured and analyzed; the distribution, branching and diameters of the superficial temporal vessels. The results were obtained as follows; 1.In 19 cases, STV(superficial temporal vein) runs posterior to STA(superficial temporal artery) at the upper border of the zygomatic arch. 2. There was no frontal or parietal branches in 2 cases and vena comitante existed along with STA in one case. 3. The external diameter of STA and STV was measured at the lower border of the zygomatic arch. The external diameter of STA ranged from 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm(average 2.1 mm) and those of STV ranged from 1.3 mm to 3.5 mm (average 2.0 mm). This study can be helpful in the reconstructive surgery using the superficial temporal vessels, for the results of our study are based on the true anatomy of the living body.

  • Superficial radial neuropathy is a purely sensory neuropathy, usually caused by nerve entrapment in the distal forearm. We report a case of superficial radial neuropathy caused by the anomalous course of the superficial radial nerve, which was found to be spirally encircling the brachioradialis tendon in the distal forearm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an anatomical variant of the superficial radial nerve that causes neuropathy.

  • In clinical dentistry, botulinum toxin is generally used to treat the square jaw, bruxism, and temporomandibular joint diseases. Recently, this procedure has been expanded and applied for cosmetic purposes, and it is becoming a key task to be aware of the precise anatomical structure of the target muscles to be cautious during treatment and how to prevent side effects. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to observe the anatomical structure of the superficial layer of masseter muscle and to provide a most effective botulinum toxin injection method through clinical anatomical consideration. It was observed that the muscle belly of superficial part of the superficial layer was originated from the deep to the aponeurosis of masseter muscle and descend, then changed gradually into the tendon structure attaching to the inferior border of the mandible. In this study, we named this structure deep inferior tendon. This structure was observed in all specimens. We conclude that the use of superficial layer and deep layer injection should be considered to prevent paradoxical masseteric bulging in consideration of the deep inferior tendon of superficial part of superficial layer of masseter muscle.

  • Background : Although plank exercises is reported to the changes in muscle activity of the deep muscles and superficial muscles among the core muscles. However, no study has examined the effects of forearm plank exercise on tone and stiffness in the superficial back line muscle. Objective: To compare the effects of sling forearm plank exercises and mat forearm plank exercises on the superficial back line muscle tone and stiffness. Design: Randomized controlled clinical trial (single blind) Methods: The subjects were randomized to sling forearm plank exercise group (N = 8) or mat forearm plank exercise group (N = 8). The measurements were taken for each research group following exercises: the muscle tone and stiffness of upper lumbar muscles, lower lumbar muscles, long head of biceps femoris, and medial part of gastrocnemius among the superficial back line muscles. Results: Sling forearm plank exercise group Indicated statistically significant increases in stiffness of medial part of gastrocnemius (p<.05). However, mat forearm plank exercise group reported no statistically significant in muscle tone and stiffness of all measured muscles. No significant differences in measured variables were found between the groups. Conclusions: These results suggest that the forearm plank exercise performed with an unstable surface in the defined sling can increase the stiffness of calf muscle, but it is unlikely to achieve increases in muscle tone and stiffness of the overall superficial back line muscles.

  • Purpose: Diabetic foot infection is one of the most common and severe complications of diabetes mellitus that delays healing of the wound. Deep tissue biopsy is considered to be the gold standard method for antibiotic selection in treating infected chronic diabetic ulcers. However, swab culture or superficial tissue biopsy is often performed for a microbiologic test since deep tissue biopsy has limitations in application. The purpose of this study is to find out whether microbiologic results of swab culture or superficial tissue biopsy could be used for selection of antibiotics in treating diabetic ulcers. Methods: This study involved 42 patients with diabetic foot ulcers with negative results in bone probing test. Tissue samples for microbiologic tests were collected from all the patients by using superficial cotton swab, superficial tissue, and deep tissue. The microbiologic results of deep tissue biopsy were compared with swab culture and superficial tissue biopsy statistically. Results: Microbiology of the deep tissue showed the same results with those of the swab culture and superficial tissue in 67% and 71%, respectively. Statistical analysis demonstrated that the microbiology of the swab culture and superficial tissue does not coincide with that of the deep tissue. Conclusion: These results suggest that the microbiology of the swab culture and superficial tissue is not concordant with that of the deep tissue in infected chronic diabetic ulcers. To select appropriate antibiotic regimen, the speci specimen for the microbiologic test should be obtained from deep tissue.
